Third Person POV

"Be sure to set your alarm," Jeff said to Barcode just before Barcode climbed out of Jeff's car.

"I will," Barcode said.

"No good bye kiss?" Jeff called out when Barcode was about to shut the passenger door.

Barcode closed the passenger door, then dutifully walked over to the driver's side.

Jeff angled his cheek so that Barcode could press his lips against it.

"I'll see you tomorrow, love," Jeff said, smiling fondly at Barcode.

Barcode gave Jeff a quick wave and then turned around and ran towards his side gate quickly pushing it open and disappearing inside.

At the front door he was greeted by Ken who had opened the door for him.

"Did you have a good lunch?" Ken asked.

"Yes, I did," Barcode replied. "How about you, what did mom prepare for lunch?"

"It was a really delicious eggplant stir fry," Ken replied. "I forgot the Thai name for it, but your mom did tell me what it was. I have so much to learn. The only Thai phrases I know so far are Sawadee kha  and Khob khun kha. But I plan to take Thai language lessons at uni."

"Good plan," Barcode remarked as he followed Ken inside, into the living room.

Barcode's mom was seated on the couch watching a talk show on the telly.

"How was your lunch date with Jeff, son?" Barcode's mom asked as she accepted the kiss that Barcode planted on her cheek.

Barcode felt his cheeks getting warm.

"It was fine," Barcode replied and disappeared quickly into his room to avoid any further interrogation from his mom.

He pulled out his desk chair and sat on it before turning his computer on.

His phone sounded a text notification just as he finished logging in his computer password.

Have you set your alarm yet? Remember I'm picking you up at seven.

Barcode rolled his eyes upward and groaned.

Suddenly there was a knock at the door.

"Come in!" Barcode called out.

The door opened slowly and then Ken poked his head inside the room.

"Can you tell me where the nearest store is where I can buy an umbrella?" Ken asked.

"Don't worry about buying an umbrella," Barcode said. "Did you not notice the umbrella stand at the corner by the front door? There are at least five umbrellas there. Just pick one and bring it with you to wherever you want to go."

"Thank you," Ken said. "Are you sure your mom won't mind?"

"Of course not," Barcode said. "Are you planning to go anywhere right now?"

"I was thinking of familiarizing myself with the neighborhood," Ken said.

"You might want to wait until the rain stops," Barcode said. "And don't just stand there by the doorway. Come inside and keep me company."

Ken hesitated.

"Please," Barcode added.

Ken walked inside and looked around Barcode's room.

"Wow, what did you win that trophy for?" Ken pointed to a gold trophy resting on top of a bookshelf.

"My team mates and I won our school basketball tournament championship games last year," Barcode replied. "I was the team captain so they let me keep the trophy. Do you like to play basketball?"

"Yes," Ken replied. "But I don't have much time for it."

"Don't be a nerd," Barcode said. "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."

"Where do you play basketball?" Ken asked.

"My classmate Aun has a basketball court at his house," Barcode replied. "My teammates and I practice at his house whenever we can. You wanna come and join us sometime?"

"If I can find the time," Ken said.

"Make time for it," Barcode said firmly. "This Saturday I will bring you with me to Aun's house."

"I will try," Ken said, not wanting to confirm anything with Barcode.

"Don't try, just do it," Barcode insisted.

"Okay," Ken said, not feeling too happy about being pressured by Barcode.

"You will like my friends," Barcode said enthusiastically. "They're a really fun group. After the game we all hang out and make some barbecue in the backyard and then some karaoke inside the house."

The karaoke part clinched it for Ken.

"Okay, I'll make time for it this Saturday," said Ken.

Barcode stood up from his chair and raised his hand for a high five with Ken.

"I promise you it will be lots of fun," said Barcode.
