Cinderella
Luke stood in the doorway, smiling at his wife, niece, and daughters. It was hard to believe this day had actually come. He remembered the day five months back, when Connor had come to him, a very important question on his mind.
Luke was sitting on the porch, and Connor came up, seeming more nervous than he'd ever seen him.
"Everything alright?" He nodded, sitting across from Luke.
"Mr. Smallbone, I...I actually came because I have a question for you." He smiled at the young man, and nodded.
"Well then, ask away. It has to do with Rebecca, doesn't it?" Connor nodded, taking a deep breath.
"I....I wanted to ask you if you would permit me....if I may have your daughter's hand in marriage." He chuckled slightly, looking at Connor.
"I would like to ask you one thing first. Do you promise that you'll take care of her, and not leave or hurt her?" Connor met his steady gaze with one of his own.
"Yes sir. I do promise. I would never dream of hurting her in any way." Luke sat up straight, smiling and taking Connor's hand.
"Connor, I.....I will give you my blessing." They shook hands, and Rebecca came out, smiling. Her hair was curled, and she had a lavender coloured dress that came down to six inches below her knees. Luke smiled, standing, and Connor followed suit. Luke watched as Connor led his daughter to the car, and then drive off. About two hours later, they returned, and he kissed her cheek as she came up. He smiled, watching her blush.
"How'd it go, sweetie?" She smiled, coming over and curling up beside him.
"Oh, it went well. This happened, though." She held up her right hand, showing something new. A silver ring, with five tiny diamonds.
"He asked me to marry him....And I said yes." He smiled, hugging her.
Luke smiled, remembering that day. Rebecca turned to look at him, while Blaire, Emily, Rachel, and Elisabeth left, smiling and laughing. Courtney smiled at Luke, her hair pulled back into a braid, the same way she'd worn it on their wedding day. She'd done the same thing to Rebecca's hair, and Becki wore Courtney's dress, looking almost as beautiful as her mother.
"Oh, wow. I'm...Becki, I'm going to start crying soon." She laughed, looking at him.
"Dad, please don't cry. Otherwise I'll start, and then mum won't be happy, cause she'll have to help with the makeup again. And that alone took a couple tries to get me to sit still." He laughed, and Courtney moved over beside him.
"You, Rebecca, look just as beautiful as the day we found you." She said quietly, fighting tears.
"And I'll be right back. I've got to get Blaire and Elisabeth ready." She slipped out, and he furiously brushed away the tears, simply watching her.
"Dad? What are you thinking about?" Luke chuckled slightly, looking down and then back up.
"I just.....I feel like I'm losing my baby girl." She smiled.
"Dad, you're not losing me." He smiled, and hugged her, as she wrapped her good arm and half one around him. He pulled back, taking a small box out.
"You've got something old, borrowed, and blue. And this....is your new." She faced the mirror, and he put a silver heart necklace around her neck, smiling. The heart had one tiny glass diamond in it, and she turned to him.
"Thank you, dad." She whispered. He smiled, and Courtney came back.
"You ready, sweet girl?" She nodded, and Courtney handed her the bouquet of twelve red roses. They went out, and then they heard the music. He took her arm, and that moment wasn't even real to him. He was walking his daughter down the aisle. They got to the end and Luke, with a couple tears escaping, handed her off to Connor. He knew Courtney was crying all throughout the service, and he nearly lost it at the end.
"I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride." He smiled, tears slipping down his cheeks, watching his daughter's first kiss. She'd made it.
"Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. and Mrs. Evans." He gently took her hand, and they went back up the aisle. Everyone except the wedding party and immediate family left for the reception. Luke went up to her, and she turned to him, smiling.
"Congratulations, sweet girl." She chuckled slightly, wrapping her arms around him again. He wrapped his arms around her, trying not to cry. He laughed quietly when he saw Ben with his camera, quickly snapping a couple pictures of them. They did the usual pictures, as well as pictures with family. At the reception, Becki came up to him again.
"Dad? Will you dance with me?" He smiled, and the center cleared a tiny bit. A new song started, and he smiled, taking her hand and put a hand on her shoulder. The song was Steve Curtis Chapman's song, Cinderella. He remembered the day they had danced to Butterfly Kisses, right before she left for college. Then he handed her off to Connor for the last time, and they had their first dance. Joel and Moriah snuck over, and they started singing I'll Wait For You. A couple hours later, he watched as they left, hand in hand and smiling. Courtney slipped her hand into his, leaning against him.
"You know this'll happen again in about 20 years?" He chuckled, crying a little.
"Don't remind me. I don't want it to rush away." As he watched them leave, he heard the song playing again in his mind.
So I will dance with Cinderella
While she is here in my arms
Cause I know something the prince never knew.
Oh, whoa, I will dance with Cinderella
I don't wanna miss even one song
Cause all too soon, the clock will strike midnight
And she'll be gone.
