sixteen.
Lucifer pushed open the front door, his keys jingling in one hand and his briefcase slung over the other. He was tired but in a good way-the kind of exhaustion that comes from a long day of doing something meaningful. His first week as a structural engineer had been a whirlwind of new responsibilities, tight deadlines, and impressing his superiors, but it was a job he was proud of.
As he stepped into his house, he immediately noticed something was off. The lights were dimmed, and there was a faint glow of string lights coming from the living room. He frowned, setting his things down carefully.
Before he could call out, a loud voice broke the silence.
"New structural engineer in the house!" Demitra yelled, her voice ringing out like a trumpet.
Lucifer blinked as the living room exploded with noise. "Surprise!" Sunday, Demitra, Eliana, and even Noah shouted in unison, their faces lighting up with excitement. The room was decorated with gold and black balloons, a "CONGRATS LUCIFER" banner hanging above the fireplace, and a table laden with food and drinks.
Lucifer stood frozen for a moment, taking it all in. "What is this?" he asked, his deep voice tinged with both confusion and amusement.
Sunday stepped forward, a proud smile on her face. She was wearing one of her signature sundresses, this one a pale yellow that complimented her complexion perfectly. Her curls framed her face, and she looked radiant under the soft glow of the lights.
"It's your surprise party, dummy," she said, stepping closer to him. "You didn't think we'd let your first week at your dream job go uncelebrated, did you?"
Lucifer's lips curved into a slow grin. "Y'all did all this for me?"
"Of course!" Eliana chimed in, her energy as bright as her older sister's. She was perched on the armrest of the couch, swinging her legs. "Sunday told us how hard you've been working, so we had to do something special."
"Plus," Demitra added, crossing her arms and smirking, "it's not every day you know someone who can design buildings and make them look good while doing it."
Lucifer chuckled, shaking his head. "Y'all crazy for this. I don't even know what to say."
"You don't have to say anything," Sunday said, reaching for his hand. Her smaller fingers intertwined with his, and she gave him a gentle tug toward the table. "Just enjoy it. You deserve this."
Lucifer let her guide him to the table, where a cake sat front and center. It was a simple but elegant design, white frosting with gold accents, and the words "Congratulations, Lucifer!" written in neat black script.
He leaned down, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "You the best, princess."
Noah cleared his throat loudly from across the room. "Okay, okay, save the mushy stuff for later. Let's cut the cake already."
Everyone laughed as Sunday handed Lucifer the knife. He made the first slice, and soon the room was filled with the sound of plates clinking and happy chatter.
As the night went on, the party transitioned into a relaxed hangout. The Kalogeras sisters had somehow managed to turn Lucifer's usually minimalistic living room into a cozy, festive space. String lights draped along the walls, soft music played in the background, and everyone was sprawled out on the couches and floor, sharing stories and laughter.
"Yo, Lucifer," Noah called out, raising his drink. "What's it like being a structural engineer? Like, you just wake up every day and say, 'I'm about to build something that won't fall down?'"
Lucifer smirked, leaning back in his chair. "Something like that. Mostly it's just makin' sure other people ain't messin' up. But when I do my thing, it's solid. Literally."
The room erupted into laughter, and Demitra shook her head. "Man, I don't know how you do it. I can barely put together an Ikea shelf without breaking something."
"That's 'cause you don't read the instructions," Eliana quipped, earning a glare from her older sister.
Sunday was curled up next to Lucifer on the couch, her head resting on his shoulder. She glanced up at him, her eyes sparkling with admiration. "I'm proud of you, you know," she said softly, her voice barely audible over the laughter.
Lucifer looked down at her, his expression softening. "Yeah?"
She nodded. "Yeah. You've worked so hard for this, and it's just the beginning. You're gonna do amazing things, Z."
Her words hit him harder than he expected. He wrapped an arm around her, pulling her closer. "I couldn't've done it without you, princess. You keep me grounded."
As the night wound down, the guests started to trickle out. Demitra and Eliana were the last to leave, with Noah in tow.
"Thanks for letting us crash your place," Demitra said, pulling Lucifer into a quick hug.
"Yeah, thanks, bro," Noah added, giving him a nod.
"Anytime," Lucifer replied, holding the door open for them.
Once they were gone, the house felt quiet again. Sunday was in the kitchen, tidying up the last of the plates. Lucifer walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist.
"You ain't gotta do all that," he murmured, resting his chin on her shoulder.
"I don't mind," she replied, leaning back into him.
They stood there for a moment, the warmth of the kitchen and the faint scent of vanilla surrounding them.
"You really went all out for me tonight," he said, his voice low.
She turned in his arms, looking up at him. "Of course I did. You're worth it, Z."
For a moment, neither of them said anything. Then, Lucifer leaned down, capturing her lips in a slow, tender kiss.
When they finally pulled apart, he rested his forehead against hers. "You my everything, Kailea."
Her cheeks flushed, but she smiled. "And you're mine."
