Chapter 4

Connor's POV

"Flash, you've been humming and laughing to yourself all day," Behzad said, plopping down in the chair next to me.

I'd been given the nickname Flash by my coworkers because of the speed and efficiency with which I worked. The Flash was one of my favourite superheroes so I absolutely loved the nickname, and my coworkers really had fun with the name.

For my last birthday they had bought me a few comic books and a Flash T-shirt as a joke, but the joke was on them because I actually loved those gifts. Kimo and I had snuggled and read all the comics the next day. He usually watched the television show with me, but it had been his first time reading a comic book. While reading them, Kimo had been filled with questions about the timeline, and we spent just as much time discussing that as reading.

Behzad pulled out a sandwich from the lunch bag on his lap, his straight black hair falling forward, barely concealing his left eye. His hand stroked his thick, well-groomed beard as he examined the contents of the sandwich with his other hand.

"Are you happy because you finally tried that sex position that I told you about?" Behzad teased once he'd reassembled his sandwich.

A light pink tint appeared on my cheeks. Little did he know, I had already tried the position, and Kimo loved it, though I would never share this information with Behzad. My sex life was private, and Behzad was known for his inability to keep a secret.

"I got engaged!" I exclaimed, wanting to change the conversation topic and share the immense joy flowing through my veins with him.

"Wow! Congratulations!" Behzad said, squishing me into a side hug. "What made you finally decide to pop the question? Last time I checked; you weren't sure when you'd do it."

"His engagement gift came through." I glanced at the watch on my wrist to check the time. The circular, gold face and new, brown leather straps brought a smile to my face. Kimo had bought this watch for me a few weeks ago after he noticed the one that I had been wearing was worn and outdated. "Kimo should be meeting with the new talent agent soon."

I covered my half-eaten sandwich and pulled my phone out of the deep pockets of my navy-blue overalls, quickly tapping out a message wishing Kimo all the best in his interview while ignoring Behzad who had leaned over my shoulder to read what I was typing.

"You sent so many emojis! You're never that expressive when you text me," Behzad said, taking a bite of his sandwich.

"Kimo loves emojis." I positioned my phone to snap a photo of me smiling and giving him a thumbs up. Behzad sneaked his head into the frame, and when I didn't protest, he grinned and stuck his thumbs up too.

"I love emojis too!" Behzad whined, taking another bite of his sandwich. I sent the photo to Kimo who replied instantly with a row of laughing face emojis and hearts and thanked both of us for the well wishes.

I scoffed and put away my phone since Kimo said that he was going into the interview and would talk to me later. "Yeah, but I'm not marrying you."

"Touché," Behzad said with a laugh before taking a chunk out of his sandwich. His tongue flicked out to lap up the condiments spilling from the sides of his mouth. "Umm, Mom really outdid herself this time."

Behzad was twenty-seven, four years older than I, and he lived with his parents. He had always said that he'd move out when he found a serious girlfriend because there was no point wasting his money when his parents' house had an empty room.

He had also been saving up to open his own mechanic shop, and he had already applied for a bank loan to cover some of the expenses. While he waited for the loan to be approved, he continued to work here and started taking a few business courses which he thought might come in handy in the future.

"Kimo had his audition this morning? How'd that go?" The tiny mole on his light beige skin just above his right eyebrow shot up as he gave me a quizzical look.

"He called afterwards. He said that it went well and he's optimistic about the role, though they still have some other candidates to see."

Behzad hummed a response and we spent the rest of lunch chatting about a girl he'd met on a dating app, whom he was planning to take on a date this weekend. The next three hours flew by as I worked on the cars, humming as I replayed Kimo saying that he would marry me in my mind.

I was taking a water break, sitting on one of the benches outside when I felt someone cover my eyes. A wide smile lit up my face as the smell of vanilla and rose petals wafted into my nose, the tantalising smell of my fiancé's shampoo.

"Guess who," he said, trying to deepen his voice.

"Hi, Kimo," one of my coworkers greeted him and Kimo removed one of his hands to wave at them. I used the opportunity to spin around and wrap my arms around his waist.

He giggled and refocused on me, running his hands through my hair before they came to rest on my ears. "Ka'u wahine hoopalau, aloha nui wau iā 'oe," he whispered with a smile.

A smile spread across my face. Something about the way the words rolled off his tongue made my heart flutter, and I would never tire of hearing them. Understanding the second half of what he said, I answered in kind, "I love you so much, Kimo." I puckered up my lips, and he leaned down to connect our lips in a brief, tender kiss. "I don't know what the first half meant." I knew most of the Hawaiian expressions Kimo used; there weren't many since his vocabulary was limited.

"Ka'u wahine hoopalau means my fiancé," he giggled, "I looked it up before I got out of the car to impress you."

"I'm very impressed," I beamed, tangling my hand in his soft, curly hair.

"I hear congratulations are in order." Behzad's voice sounded from behind me, pulling us from our love bubble. Kimo giggled and moved away to hug Behzad. "Is that the plastic bit of a ring pop?" he asked, examining Kimo's left hand.

Kimo had eaten the ring pop and after washing the plastic ring part he put it back onto his ring finger. He had sworn that he would wear it until we received the rings I'd ordered from that sketchy website. I really hoped they would arrive soon because I had tried to talk Kimo out of wearing the plastic, but he was being stubborn.

"It is! It's my ring!" Kimo exclaimed, admiring the tacky, red plastic with a bright smile.

Behzad still looked confused, but shrugged it off. "Congrats again to both of you."

"I gave him a ring pop as a placeholder until we get our rings," I said because it didn't seem like Kimo was interested in saying more than he already did.

"Ah that makes a bit more sense," Behzad murmured before returning to work.

I was finishing work in about forty-five minutes, so Kimo sat outside and waited while I finished up and changed.

"Ready to go?" I asked, about an hour later once I re-emerged from inside with Behzad trailing close behind. Kimo nodded and rose from his seat on the bench.

We bid Behzad farewell and Kimo and I headed home. "Tell me about the interview with the talent agent." I knew he wanted to talk about it before, but I didn't ask him earlier because I was still working and wouldn't have been able to fully pay attention to all the details that he was itching to share.

From the corner of my eye, I noticed his face lighting up, and that alone was enough to bring a smile to mine. "It was great l! Mrs. Boucher, though she said to call her Margot," I could feel the excitement radiating from his body as I turned onto the main road, "Margot was so nice! I was a little nervous initially, but it didn't take long for me to settle my nerves. She asked me to do two monologues for her and I also had to read a scene from a script.

"Then I got to ask her some questions and she said she would take me on! She gave me a contact to review and return to her at my earliest convenience!" Kimo gushed, the words spilling out of him in a constant stream.

"That's great, Kimo!" I said, taking his hand from his lap and kissing the back of his hand. "I'm happy for you, and soon you'll be on to bigger and better things."

Kimo brought my hand to his mouth and pressed a long kiss to the back of my hand. "We'll be on to bigger and better things. Thank you for always believing in me," he murmured. "I know you'd be mad at me if I said I owed you," and he would have been right. I made my choices and I have absolutely no regrets, I'd do it all over in a heartbeat. "So instead, I'll say that I'll always be grateful to you, and I promise that I will try to make you proud."

I parked in front of our apartment building and glanced over to the person I wanted to share the rest of my life with. "You already do. I'm so proud of you." The most breathtaking smile I'd ever seen adorned his face before he leaned towards me and connected our lips.

Even after all these years I could still hardly believe this boy was mine.
