Chapter 2: The 104th Trainees
Your P.O.V.
"Who the hell are you?!" Keith Shadis yelled at us, the trainees.
Two years since Wall Maria's fall.I had become a rock; if anyone tried to mess with my friends, they would get a few broken bones in return. I had become someone with a strong character, unlike Armin. And I wanted nothing more than to avenge the dead.
Shadis went around the lines, asking the trainees who they were and why they wanted to join the army. I noticed that he avoided those with the dark looks that signaled that they had already seen the Titans' horror firsthand.
I wore a serious expression as he came over to me. "Who the hell are you?!" He screamed in my ear. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes, and instead saluted.
"Name's (Y/N). (Y/N) Evans from Shiganshina District!" I said loudly,my eyes staring at him. It was the first time I had uttered my last name since that incident. Armin, Eren, and Mikasa stared at me shocked. Thinking somethig along the lines of: 'She never said her real last name! Evans..? I've heard that name before!'
Shadis froze for a moment, then yelled again. "Why are you here?!"
My eyes instantly became dark, gleaming with fury. "To kill the Titans."
Keith Shadis' eyes widened unnoticeably when he heard my last name, realizing my identity. "Are you the daughter of Estelle and George Evans?!"
My eyes became darker. I kinda hoped that he wouldn't reveal my parents' names....not even Armin knew who they were. Through the years we spent together, I never told him I was their daughter. I groan as my secret was revealed. "Yes sir."
All the other trainees gasped, my three friends included.
"B-but...."
"Weren't the Evans Humanity's Strongest before Captain Levi?"
"But that means..!"
All kinds of whispers were heard and I didn't like it at all. It bothered me greatly.
"Oh now we've got one of Humanity's Strongest's offspring here! Row 2! Turn around!" Shadis yelled, looking back at me for a second. 'George....your daughter...'
Oh great. Now Eren, Mika, and Armin will ambush me with questions. I turn around, face to face with Eren. He was staring at me, shocked and amazed, but his eyes showed betrayal.
Shadis walked up to Armin. "What's your name?!"
"A-Armin Arlert sir!"
"That's a stupid name! Who named you?!"
"M-my grandfather sir!" Armin stuttered, sweating buckets.
"Well, he was an idiot!! Thise lile you can barely be used as titan meat!"
I glared at Shadis' back, trying really hard not to break a few bones of his. I clicked my tongue. What an ass...
Shadis yelled at more trainees. This is stupid... He's only greeting us with yells...
I listened to the other trainees speak, and I wanted to yell at the ones who wanted to join the Military Police. Idiots! Being inside the walls won't keep ya safe! At some point...Wall Sina will fall too...
*CRUNCH*
Shadis stopped in front of a girl with a potato.
"YOU!" Shadis yelled. "What the fuck are you doing?!"
What is she doing?!
'She's insane!'
The rest of us turned to her with wide eyes, and jaws dropped.
The brunette glanced around, to see if he was talking to her.
"YOU! I'm talking to you! Who the hell are you maggot?!" Shadis screamed in her face, as she backed her face away, munching.
The brunette swallowed, and saluted. "Sasha Blouse, from Dauper Village, South of Wall Rose!" She exclaimed. Her hair was up in a ponytail, and her brown eyes were narrowed.
Well, at least, she saluted right. That Connie almost got himself killed for doing the salute wrong... I sweatdropped as I remembered the baldie.
Shadis stared down at her, casting a shadow upon her. "What are you holding in your right hand?"
"A steamed potato sir! I found a batch that was lying around in the kitchen!" She exclaimed without hesitation.
I deadpanned. She's an idiot.
"Did you steal that then?" Shadis asked. "Why? Why are you eating a potato right now?" His expression was unreadable, and the ret of us trainees could only stare at her as if she was insane.
"It's best when warm, so I thought it'd be a waste to eat it after it cooled down, sir." Sasha said.
"I still don't understand. Why are you eating a potato?" Shadis asked, his expression kinda creeped me out.
Sasha made a confused expression with a frown. "Are you asking me why people eat potatoes sir?"
We stared at her in shock. Are you serious?!
Sasha then gasped softly, split the potato in 'half', and clicked her tongue. "You can have half sir." She said reluctantly.
She offered Shadis 'half',which was actually more like a tiny piece. I desperately tried to hold in my laughter.
"Half?" Shadis stared at the potato with a shocked expression.
•••
He told her to run until she dropped. But it seemed like she was more upset when he told her she wouldn't have dinner. I could never tell if he did it because she stole it, or because she gave him just a little piece, not 'half'.
"Tomorrow you'll start your aptitude testing! I expect all of you ready at dawn! Dismissed!" Shadis yelled.
I flinched. Doesn't he know what a normal voice tone sounds like? And dawn?! I can't wake up so early!
•••
I was hanging out with Eren and Armin, outside the dinner hall. Mika was already in the girls cabin, probably planning all the questions she was gonna ask me.
"He's still making potato girl run." I said, calling Sasha by her new nickname. Eren chuckled. I then noticed a cart with trainees going away from camp. "Oi,isn't it a little bit too early to quit?" I pointed to the cart on the road in front of us.
"I can't believe they'd rather go back to picking up weeds." Eren said. I shrugged.
"But I guess it's just normal. If you don't have what it takes, you have to leave." Eren said. I nodded with a determined look.
"Come to think of it, he didn't ask where you were from, did he?" Connie asked Eren. Eren smiled and slung his arms over Armin and I's shoulders.
"I'm from Shiganshina District, same as these two." Eren said. I nodded with a smile, suddenly happy with Eren's arm on my shoulder. Wait what?!
"But.. that means that..!"
"Did you see the Colossal Titan?!" Connie asked us, with an excited face. I looked down, playing with mom's cloak. I had lost dad's cloak; it was back at our home in Shiganshina, so I had only mom's cloak now.
•••
It was dinner time. Eren and I were sitting on a table, after he and I discussed about my heritage, and were currently being ambushed by a group of trainees with a loooot of questions.
"Did you see the Colossal Titan?" A boy asked. Uh....'sup with this guys?
Thankfully, Eren answered for the both of us. "Yeah, we saw it."
"How big was it!?"
"I heard it could step over the wall!"
"I heard that too!"
I facepalmed and shook my head with a sigh. "It wasn't that big. It clearly saw over the wall, though."
The guys gasped. "What did it look like?"
"It had no skin, only the muscles showed." I deadpanned. This is annoying.....
"What about the Armored Titan, the one that broke Wall Maria?"
Eren and I scoffed. "Is that what they're calling it?"
"In all the madness it looked like a normal Titan." I said flatly. I hate questions.
"So what are normal Titans like?"
I held my breath. The memory of Karla's death on my mind. Eren did the same and covered his mouth in slight panic.
"Let's stop with the questions guys. I'm sure there are some things they don't wanna remember." One of the boys said. I think his name is Marco Bott..?
I stopped frowning and looked up. Eren snapped back to reality. "No. It's fine. We just forgot ourselves for a moment there." Eren said, he had this kinda crazy look in his eyes."Once we master the 3D Maneuvering Gear, titans will be a piece of cake, then I can join the Survey Corps and kill them all/myself" Eren and I said in unison. We looked at each other a little bit surprised that we said it at the same time, but smiled and then chuckled.
"Signing up for the Scouts is suicide." Jean Kirchstein said from the table next to ours.I slightly glared at him from afar and ignored his statement.
"Guess we'll see, well Eren and I will. While you are cowering in the interior." I coldly said to him. I pulled the hood of the cloak up and covered my face. "Now, if you don't mind, I have got better things to do than just sit around." I stood up and walked away, slamming the door behind me. I don't like cowards with big mouths.
Third P.O.V
"(Y/N)! Wait!" Armin ran after his sister. Eren glared from his seat a Jean. He didn't like Jean at all.
"Look, I'm just being honest here. Unlike some big mouthed kids who are just as scared as us." Jean smirked. Eren got to his feet. "Not to mention, a brat who thinks that she's better just because she's the daughter of the Evans."
"Are you talking about us?" Eren questioned, walking to Jean with a glare.
"Eren, sit down." Mikasa warned.
Jean stood up and him and Eren glared at each other, but were-fortunately-interrupted by the bell.
"Hey, I apologize, let's be friends." Jean held out his hand to Eren.
"Yeah. I'm sorry too." Eren smacked his hand away and stomped out.
Mikasa inmeaditely went after him, but not before she was complimented by Jean.
Your P.O.V.
Armin and I were talking in front of the dinner hall, waiting for Eren and Mika.
"You never think things through when you get out of control, you know?" Armin said with a sigh. I groaned and nodded. I know he's right, I just don't want to admit it.
"I know, I know. It's just....he got on my nerves." I said with a sigh, rubbing my cloak with my fingers.
"........Why didn't you tell us who you were?" Armin suddenly asked. I froze and looked to the side.
"I.....I wanted to forget who I was. I wanted to believe that I really was your sister Armin. I wanted to be an Arlert. After my parents died, I had no real family left, my only relative was always on missions with the Survey Corps." I confessed slowly, almost in a whisper. I didn't mention he was my uncle though. "I wanted to forget the fact that my family is dead." I sighed with a frown, avoiding eye contact I looked at the night sky. "I didn't want you to treat me or think of me differently, so I decided not to tell anyone. The only one who always knew was Grandpa."
Armin's eyes were wide. 'She has never been this honest before...(Y/N) you've always been my sister..' Armin then smiled softly and hugged me.
"But you are already my sister silly." He said softly.
Eren and Mika came out from the dinner hall.
With Eren and Mikasa POV
"You never think things through when you get worked up." Mika said. "You are just like (Y/N)." She sighed tiredly.
Eren blushed at the mention of her name. "That again? Anyways, don't you think your hair's too long? It could cause an accident with the maneuver gear, you know?" He flipped Mika's hair back.
"Okay. I'll cut it. But how short should it be?" Mika asked.
Jean watched them, gaping horrified. When Connie walked past him, he wiped his hand on his back.
"H-Hey! Don't mess with other people's clothes! What did you wipe on me?!" Connie panicked, trying to reach and wipe away whatever Jean had wiped in his shirt.
"My trust..." Jean said sulking quietly.
With Armin and you P.O.V.
"Well, I need to go to the girls cabin before curfew brother. Goodnight, Armin." I said, hugging my brother and kissing him on the cheek.
"Yeah. Goodnight sis'. " Armin hugged me back, and then walked to the boys' cabin that was assigned to him and Eren. I walked away to my girls cabin, and waited for Mika to come back.
•••
"We'll begin by determining your aptitude! If you can't do this, you can't even be bait! You'll be send off to the fields!" General Shadis yelled, looking at the hanging trainees. I groaned in annoyance.
Why the hell does he have to yell so loudly? Can't he talk like a normal person?
Last night, I almost didn't get any sleep, because the girls were asking A DAMN LOT of questions about me being an Evans. Even Mikasa!
I am so sleepy..! I stayed still, not moving an inch. The wires obliged, and I just hung there, as steady as a rock. I looked over and smiled at the sight; Mikasa was doing the same thing. I looked around to see the trainees looking at me and talking. I sighed in exasperation and looked to the other side, surprised to see Eren upside down. Oh my Maria....
"Eren! You're supposed to be steady!" I whisper-yelled at him.
"I'm trying!" He said back. I facepalmed, not moving an inch. I got the feeling that it isn't his fault.....maybe his gear is defective...
"What are you doing Cadet Jaeger?! Straighten yourself up!" Shadis yelled at Eren. I flinched and looked at mom's green cloak, which I never took off. Damn! He yells really loudly! He's beginning to gimme a headache!
I looked around to see everyone laughing at Eren. Except Mika, Armin, Marco, and I. For some reason, it bothered me greatly that they laughed at him. "Shut up!" I growled at them lowly. The trainees inmeaditely shut up, fearing for their lives.
Eren in his mind, panicked and freaked out. 'What the...? How do I do this thing?! This can't be real! How can I kill Titans like this?!'
•••
"Just follow the basics. Focus on your balance, clear your mind. Relax and it'll come to you." I told Eren, who was standing, with his straps on. Mika, Armin, and I were trying to help Eren out with his gear. We had finished training a while ago, and the sun was setting.
"You can do it if you stay calm. Even I did it after all" Armin added.I nodded.
"All right, I feel like I've got it this time. Lift me up Armin." Eren said with a determined look.
Armin nodded and started to crank the ODM.
Why do I have a feeling this won't end good... I sweatdropped.
And I was right... I deadpanned. Once Eren got two inches off the ground he lost his balance and fell face first, getting knocked out.
I tried to hold my laughter before Mika said anything and facepalmed.
•••
We sat on a table, eating the awful dinner.
"Guess all that talk was nothing!"
"What a loser!"
Hearing the mean comments about Eren, I growled.
"Isn't he the one who said he was gonna slaughter all the Titans? I guess he'll be off to the fields tomorrow."
"Yeah. We can't afford to feed the useless."
I pulled the hood of my cloak up, to conceal the scowl on my face. I sighed and clenched my fists. "There's no point worrying about it. I'm sure it's not your fault Eren." I turned to Eren, trying to reassure him.
"I'm pathetic... There's no way I can wipe 'em all out like this." Eren looked down, sulking. I smiled conformtingly. "Don't worry! I'm sure it's not your fault."
"You should just forget about that." Mika suddenly said, looking at her bowl.
"What?!" Eren looked at her. I looked at her under my hood, with wide eyes. How can she say that?! She knows we can't do that!
"Both of you. You should stop trying to become soldiers. Fighting isn't about simply throwing your lives away." Mika said, looking at me and Eren. My eyes widened and I looked at her with a horrified look.
"Hey now! We both saw what happened that day! Are you really expecting us to just quit?!" Eren yelled at Mikasa. I looked at Mika with shock.
"Mikasa... you know I can't do that either. My parents... I didn't say goodbye to them." I said with a scowl on my face, my dark eyes were covered by the shadow of my hood. I looked down at my bread, losing my apetite.
"Still, it doesn't matter how much you want it." Mika said. I clenched my fists and Eren freaked out.
"Huh?!"
"You don't get to decide if you are fit to be a soldier or not." Mika concluded. I glared at my plate.
Eren's eyes widened at her answer. Then the bell rang.
".....I'm not saying you should return to the frontier by yourself...."
"Let's go Armin,(Y/N)." Eren said. I nodded and quickly stood up, forgetting about Mikasa. "Y-Yeah." Armin nodded nervously.
"Don't worry, I will go with you." Mikasa continued, without noticing that we had already left.
•••
I silently pleaded. "C'mon Eren! You can do it!"
It was the day of truth; Eren was to be lifted again, and if he didn't manage to stabilize himself, he'd be sent to the fields. Shadis was checking our abilities with the 3DMG and expulsing the ones who couldn't stay steady. My turn had already passed, and now it was Eren's.
He was raised in the air. He managed to be steady for a few seconds, before falling again, his head almost touching the floor. Ouch!
I winced and panicked and looking at Shadis.
"No! Wait! Not yet! One more time!" Eren exclaimed desperately. I looked at Shadis, panicking inside. What is he gonna say?!
"Wagner, switch belts with Jaeger!" Shadis yelled.
UH HUH! KNEW IT! His belt must be defective!
Thomas and Eren exchanged belts and Eren was lifted up again. And this time, he stayed steady, without a problem. Yosh!
"The fitting in your belt was broken. I had never heard of this part being damaged. I'll have to add that to the maintenance list." Shadis said, not yelling for once. He showed Eren's belt, which had a pike sticking up that shouldn't have.
Mumbles scattered across the crowd of trainees.
"So he managed to stay up, even if only for a little time, with a broken belt?!"
I smirked happily. That's my Eren! I knew he could do it.
"See! Mikasa! (Y/N)! You don't have to protect me anymore!" Eren was smiling like an idiot. Wait. Wait. Wait.
MY EREN?!?!
"From here on,we'll start training seriously!" General Keith yelled.
•••
The day after Eren's triumph, we trained in hand-to-hand combat.
"The three scout captains will be seeing your progress at the beginning and end of your training!" Shadis shouted.
The Scout Captains?! My eyes shined and I grinned.
"Today's first training will be hand-to-hand combat. I'll give each pair a wood dagger, the one with the dagger will try to attack the one without a dagger. The one who has no dagger has to take the dagger from his partner. When you are done, exchange places. Clear?"
I smirked. I'm pretty confident in my martial arts; Mom and Dad taught me when I was small.
"Eren, you and me?" I smirked at my friend. Eren smirked back. "Oh, you're on."
Eren got the dagger from Shadis and then came to me. "Ready when you are."
I smirked. "I'm good now."
Eren inmeaditely tried to hit me with the dagger but I easily dodged. This'll be a piece of cake! He stumbled when I dodged and I took my chance. I flipped him over and put a knee on his chest., his face was close to mine. We both blushed slightly, but I ignored it. This isn't the time for that!
"There." I smirked. I took the dagger from him and stood up, flipping the dagger in my hand.
"Since were you so good at this?" Eren asked, rubbing his head. 'She threw me so hard!'
My smirk faded, and I frowned slightly. Eren realized it was a mistake to ask. "I'm s-sorry for asking."
I smiled sadly and shook my head. For some reason, whenever someone mentioned something even remotely related to my parents, my heart hurt, and my head throbbed. "Don't be. Mom and Dad were the ones who taught me. I've known how to do this since I was a little kid."
Eren's eyes widened. 'That's right! Her parents are the Evans! But it doesn't look like she likes to talk about her parents anyway..'
I stroked my green cloak. "That's how." I got in a battle stance, with the dagger in my hand. "Now come and try to take this dagger."
Eren nodded and pounced on me but I rolled to the side. I didn't really want to engage him head on.
"Don't go easy on me." Eren said. If you say so...
"Sorry for this." I flipped above him, kicking him down. I put a boot on his chest, the dagger on his throat. "There. I win."
I tossed the dagger to Eren. "How did you do that?" He asked. I smirked. "Superpowers."
I laughed at my joke and Eren squinted his eyes with an 'Are you serious look..?' We laughed at my joke. Mikasa walked to Eren and I.
"Hey, Eren, be my partner." Mikasa said. Eren hesitated and looked at me. I nodded and smiled. "It's alright Eren."
Eren said yes to Mika and they got ready to fight. In a few seconds, Eren had got the dagger, although he had a really bad bruise on his cheek now. I smiled. So he learned that today?
"Nice Eren" I said with a smile.
