Prologue
A/N: video above is an edit type au thing I made, I'd appreciate if you'd watched it <3
It all started with Romeo and Juliet. There wasn't any other way to put it, except that fact that it was the topic of Rey's thoughts for the next few weeks.
"It's stupid."
"It's literature, a famous piece at that."
"Why does that matter? The whole plot is unrealistic and makes no sense!"
She remembered the sympathetic glances from her classmates and how her fists hit the desk in frustration.
"It's just a play Rey."
"I know, it's just that —" Tears began to spring at her eyes. "It's unrealistic."
"I think you're getting too into it Rey. I appreciate your dedication but for time being, maybe try to just focus on the language."
Ears burning, she nodded. Listening to the snickers of her classmates.
She imagined Romeo's desperation and Juliet's talk of pilgrims. What did love at first sight have anything to do with pilgrims anyway?
"Tonight I want you to annotate Act 2 Scene 2 and take notes on the writing techniques as well as the language used."
The light of the flashlight left a bright shadow on the book page. The dim light caused her eyes to squint down at the small black words.
Unrealistic
Cliche
Boring
And with her pencil that's exactly what she wrote. Criticizing every line and word written.
Unrealistic
They literally just met
Romeo is desperate
Why are they getting married already?
This isn't going to turn out good
Unrealistic time
You can't just kiss at first sight
Her anger hit the page, one word at a time. When her pencil finally broke she could hear the shouts downstairs, there was the usual curse words and names that she heard on an almost daily basis.
"You whore!"
And then the sound of glass breaking filled her ears. The shouts went silent. Her eyes scanned over the ajar door to her closest sized room. Loud footsteps became closer and Rey hid herself under her thin blanket.
"Rey, when they come I want you to say you did it."
"What?" She peeked her head from out the blanket.
"I want you to tell them you were the one who hit her with the vase."
So that was where the sound came from.
"Why would I do that?"
"You wouldn't want to lose another father, will you?"
"N-no."
"Then tell them!"
He turned around and stomped out the room. A few minutes later there was a loud pounding at the door and Rey's breath hitched. Climbing out of bed, she crept out the door and stayed at the top of the steps.
"We were called about a worried neighbor who heard fighting."
"It's fine, nothing to worry about here."
"May we have a look around then?"
They stopped when they spotted the tangled heap of a body on the floor.
"Who did this?"
"I-it was my daughter, Rey. Rey? Come down and explain to these nice men what you did."
She sighed, walking slowly down the steps. Her stomach churned with guilt she didn't have.
"How old are you?"
"13 turning 14 next month..."
"And you did this to your adoptive mother?"
Rey went silent and her adoptive father cut in.
"They were arguing and Rey let her anger issues get out of control! I tried to break them up but it was too late! She's gone..." he blinked a couple of times before letting fake tears consume him.
"Did you do this?"
"I-I did...not." She burst into tears. "I can't go to jail at 13 I can't!"
"Don't worry, we will get this taken care of. I'm Han by the way."
She shook his hand.
"Get your stuff and we will get you out of here."
Rey nodded running quickly upstairs.
"You stupid little brat! After all I've done for you!!"
She ignored his words, her eyes catching her unfinished school assignment. Taking her pen, she wrote one last thing inside before closing the book and taking her small bag of belongings.
True love doesn't exist. If it did why was my adoptive mother killed by the one who's supposed to protect her from harm. True love is a sham.
A single tear rolled down her cheek as she walked down the stairs and out the door. Face meeting with the frigid air.
