Chapter 1: Rescue

Thick fog spread across the street like icing as I stepped out of my apartment. The streetlamps were emanating a dim glow that was hardly visible through it. On days like these, people usually preferred to stay inside and treat it like it was a rainy day. The fog sometimes got so bad that they closed the school for the day, fearing the kids would lose their way.

I for one think that it's ridiculous to do so but I guess they're still afraid of last year's incident. A kid named Duncan went missing and they found him dead in a well a week later. I hear the only reason they could find his body was due to the rich stench of rot that it gave off. People describe the stench as sickly, you'd never know how bad it could smell until you experienced it yourself. It was like roadkill and the rotting corpse of your pet guinea pig that had died right after you left for your week long vacation and you blended those two together in a smoothie and added fish sauce as seasoning.

I closed the door to my apartment swiftly, as to prevent any fog from seeping in. A softened cry was heard from around the corner. I quickly tiptoed to the edge of the sidewalk, of course unable to see anything. The cry was louder than before. I call out. "Hello? Is someone there?"

Silence blankets the night, but only for a moment.

A muffled screech echoed through the streets which makes me flinch. Whoever it is, a hand might be covering their mouth desperately trying to contain the sound.

I call out once more into the silvery thick fog, "Who's out there?"

My question is met once again with quiet struggling, which is almost inaudible now. I take one step at a time into the gloom, careful not to be too loud. I could hear a silent but harsh whisper now. "Shut your mouth and stay still, I can't let them know I have you. You're safe now, you're safe now..." The last line was repeated several times, getting quicker when the victim struggled to free himself from their captor's grasp. It was used along with a string of hushes, as if that would help quiet them down.

My body shook with distress, sending chills down my spine as I questioned my next actions. I tried to make my steps as impeccable as humanly possible, if I tripped now it would certainly be the end of any hope for the victim. I had no idea how to go about this extravagant espionage of sorts.

I hastily moved my way closer to the sound, and closer... closer... until the whispering was so loud it must have been only a few feet away.

Another scream erupted from the source, although now it sounded like a fatigued yowl being covered by a rag. This startled me and I panicked, doing what might have been incredibly stupid on my part, which was to tackle whatever was in front of me.

I later concluded that this was a bad choice because A, they were probably already sitting down and I just fell on top of them, and B, I could have hurt the victim.

A blow to the head probably felt horrible, but I didn't feel much pain at all since my body was filled with adrenaline. It did make me feel a bit woozy though. With minimal sight, I managed to kick at the captor, or what I assume was the captor. Phoenix, the victim, later told me I accidentally kicked them in the shin twice, my bad. But I grab him from under the arms and drag them away as fast as I could. The captor stumbling close behind.

I yelled for someone to help me, gaining only some attention. Light turned on from a few windows and lit up through the fog. Phoenix had gotten up now and had started running with me. A valiant heist, no, a valiant rescue that caught the attention of a few, only one to help keep the captor off our backs. Phoenix was safe though as we ran back to my house and called the police. We heard banging on the door occasionally, my head now throbbing worse with every coming time the captor slammed their fists against the door. Phoenix gripped my hand tightly as we sat there in silence, waiting for the inevitable sirens in which his arrest would surely follow. Our breath was one of the many sounds that echoed in our ears. It must have been only minutes, but the wait seemed like hours.

A/N

This was originally an essay I wrote for my English class, but the ending was rushed. So now I'm taking it and hopefully transforming it to a fully fledged story. I hope you enjoyed, stay tuned for the next chapter!
