Chapter 1
I heard a click. The door swung open and the water poured out into the hallway, taking me with it. I landed on my butt, soaking wet and already sick of this. Unfortunately, I had chosen to wear jeans today.
The water had continued to spill into the hallway. I ran towards the staircase at the end of the hall. A sign next to me read D Deck. I was somehow on a ship. The water at the end of the hallway was already ankle deep. I ran up the stairs, taking them two at a time. I was not going to drown today!
I ran up the stairs until I approached a deck that said B deck. In front of me were two giant grey metal doors with weird scanners next to them. One had a giant 4 on it and the other read 5 in the same splotchy red paint.
From the stairs besides me I heard footsteps. I turned to look to my sides. From one side, two boys, a little girl, and an older lady ran down. On the other side, two girls, a boy, and an older man ran down. I stared at them, slightly in shock. On all of their hands were the same bracelet that I had.
"Hey! Do you know what we're doing here?" asked a girl with black hair cut very short.
"Where's my mommy?" wailed the little girl with little blonde pigtails.
"It's okay sweetie, I'll take care of you," a older woman with dark skin said, hugging the little girl. The little girl seemed to calm down a little bit.
"What's going on?" mumbled a boy with messy blonde hair.
"If we knew, we wouldn't be here," responded an older man with short blonde hair and a mustache.
"We all have these weird bracelets," said a boy with dark red hair and rectangle rimmed glasses. "What numbers do you have?"
"I'm 1," said the older man
"I'm 3," the boy responded.
"I'm 4," mumbled the boy with messy blonde hair
"I'm 5," I said, holding out my bracelet.
"I'm 6," said the little girl.
"I'm 8," said the black haired girl.
"And I'm 9," said the older woman. The only people who hadn't said anything were a girl with an odd outfit choice and a boy with very messy brown hair.
"Hey, what about you guys?" I called over to them. They both looked like they were in some kind of trance.
"Pardon me, but does anyone else remember their last memories?" the girl with the weird outfit asked.
"My last memory is right before I was abducted," I said. The girl frowned. So did the boy.
"I...don't remember my name," said the boy. The girl nodded. They looked very confused.
"What numbers are you?" the little girl asked. The two teens looked at their bracelets.
"I'm 2," the boy responded.
"I'm 7," said the girl.
"We have bracelets with the numbers 1 through 9 on them, but why? And who?" the girl with black hair asked, looking for anyone that could answer her. As if on cue, a voice came on the intercoms of the ship. It was deep and gravelly, obviously disguised.
"I am Zero. I am the captain of this ship. Currently, the ship is sinking. You have nine hours to escape this ship before it goes under. On your left wrist is your bracelet. To enter a number door, simply scan your bracelet on the reader, or the RED. To enter a numbered door, 3-5 people must scan their bracelets. The digital root of their bracelets must equal the number on the door. Once everyone has scanned their bracelets, pull the lever. The door will stay open for nine seconds. Everyone who has entered their bracelet must enter the door. Once the door has closed, a detonator in the bracelets activates."
"Wait, detonator?!" exclaimed the man.
"Everyone has 90 seconds to scan their bracelets on the deactivator, or the DEAD. Once all bracelets are scanned, pull the lever and the detonators will deactivate. To escape this ship, seek a way out. Seek a door that carries a nine."
"What about these bracelets? How do we get them off?" the girl with the weird fashion sense asked.
"There are two ways that these bracelets will come off. The first, you escape this ship. The second, your heart rate reaches zero. To go through a number door, only the bracelet is needed. As I said before, to escape the confines of this ship, seek a door that carries a nine." The intercom flickered off, leaving us all in more confusion than before.
