The greek way
Nick knew that these Fries were nothing but normal. He was silently lying on his bed, thinking about the events of the last day. "Aphrodite, what does that mean?" he thought. Who is Aphrodite? Pretty rare name, not many women are named like that. He had broken in Mr Yannis' office at midday, he checked the books, no Aphrodite was staying inside the camping site. However, his plans for further investigations will come to a halt.
He didn't want to get in trouble if his parents found out anything and he couldn't do it alone, so he stayed in his trailer, scrawling in Instagram, swiping threw stories. He stopped to a particular story. Danae was partying at a beach club at Nikitas, a town on the other side of the gulf. She was with somebody. A boy. It had been a month and some days and she was already seeing others. "Relax Nick, it might have been a one-night thing, don't rush to conclusions," he told himself. He clicked on her icon and transmitted to her profile.
His instincts were correct. She had been seeing that guy. The last post was a picture of them on the beach, the caption could explain everything. "one night isn't enough". Nick and Danae had a complicated past. They had broken up twice in a year, their last break up was too hard on Nick, but he couldn't believe that Danae could move on so soon when he wasn't still ready. The sun had set and Nick hadn't moved an inch. He had a plain face, rethinking everything. How tough was his life, how lonely he was at school after his break up, how he has to deal with his stupid family 24/7.
The door of the trailer opened. "Nick, we're eating, your father and I are going to Mr Abraamopoulos trailer for cards later, please make sure Anne sleeps early". Nick just raised his head. "Can I stay here, I'm not that hungry" his mother came closer. "Are you alright honey? Why don't you want to eat?" It was right then that Anne started screaming. "Mum, MUUUM" she cried. "I'll be back in a little Nick," she said, closing the trailer's door. She didn't return at all that evening.
That was the struggle being the middle-child, there was never time for him, neither energy nor money. He had to solve his problems by himself while having to assist everyone else. He remained in the same position. Laid down on his bed, until he had fallen asleep.

The inspector was sitting on the desk, still thinking the chief's alternative. The vibration of her phone moved her away from her thoughts. "Hello Inspector," a voice said from the other edge of the line. "We need you back in the city" the voice continued. "But sir, I've been here for only two days..." the inspector started talking but she was quickly interrupted. "We know, but there are more important things for you than an old lady," the inspector knew this tactic very well. The police force would send someone to investigate, only to relocate him to another crime scene some days later. "Anyways, you are leaving at least tomorrow morning." "What about this crime?" Inspector Anthi asked. "Leave it to the local authorities Anthi, they can handle one small investigation, I am sure they have already found some suspects, end of the story. I want you at the office tomorrow at nine" the voice said and closed his phone.
"Now what?" she thought. She was so pissed off by their seniors that it was moments like this that she considered quitting. She couldn't leave every case she got on her hands open. She opened her phone and called back. "I will return to the office tomorrow if you promise that you will let me finish my investigations from now on," she said. The voice on the other side didn't talk for a few seconds, making Anthi feel that she had made the worst mistake of her life. Her hands trembling, sweat all over her body until the voice came back. "Fine," he said. Anthi let a huge sigh of relief. "...but, you have to be quick" "I know sir" she replied "Goodnight"
She asked the chief to enter the office. "Chief I have been recalled back. The investigation is on your hands from now on" the chief looked her like a beggar looks at the people passing by. "When are you leaving madam?" he asked. "Tonight, Ihave to be at the office tomorrow," she said while packing her bag. "Take this" she gave him her plastic folder. "This is everything that I have gathered in the last two days" The chief took the folder in his hands, taking a glance on the inside, then leaving it again back on the desk. "You have two choices chief. Continue the investigation, or put the blame immediately on the convict." Anthi said as she placed her bag on her bag. "Please don't choose the greek way," she said leaving the chief alone in Mr Yannis' small office.

"Hey, Nick," Jim said leaning on the door. "Wh...what?" Nick asked frustrated, leaving the screen of his phone for a minute. "Are you going to spend the rest of your summer stuck inside" "Come on man, go out, get some fresh air." "I'm not in the mood Jim," Nick said. "You'll never be in the mood to do anything until you start doing something Nick. We can just go somewhere outside, for a walk, or a ride with our bikes." Nick got out of bed and put on a blue light jacket. "Fine let's go," he said smiling to his friend.
They left the driveway and turned left, passing Luke's trailer on their right hand. "You know he doesn't even want to speak to me," Jim told Nick, noticing that he was staring at the same direction as him. "Most of my texts are left on seen. When I asked him to hang out with us he said he was busy" he said in a sad note. "It seems like our little group is falling apart. Is this why you are worried about?" Jim said looking at Nick now.
"No, not only that," Nick said. "You know what I saw yesterday?" "What?" Jim asked curiously. "Danae with another guy." Jim froze. "My friendships are breaking in pieces and she is already seeing others" tears were forming in Nick's eyes. "Hey, don't have that kind of mindset," Jim said. "It's not over yet and a guy with your looks could get back in the game anytime he wants" "Yeah sure," Nick said ironically. "Yes..." Jim said. "... do you wanna know what happened at the cage?" "What happened Jim?" Nick could remember Jim going in the bathrooms with a girl, but on their way home he said he didn't want to talk about it.
"I went into the bathrooms with a girl, when I got inside, she looked at me in the white clean light, she then took a glance in the mirror, seeing us and said" Jim gulped. " she said «Sorry, I'm not doing shit with babies» and she left me alone" Nick didn't know what to say. "So you can take all the time you want to get threw your breakup, but by the time you'll start looking around again you won't find any obstacles"
NIck was left speechless. Jim wasn't ugly, he just looked young, but he had never thought of his looks like something that mattered. "I..." he started talking "I am sorry Jim, I didn't want to act so selfishly," Nick said. "You don't have to be Nick, I understand your pain." Jim replied "all I want is that you don't give up. So she broke up with you, things like that happen all the time, go out, have fun, meet others too." Jim was right, he couldn't move on if he was doing no effort to. "You know what," Jim said as he saw his friends mood to become better. "We'll go to the cage again when the police leave of course"
"How will we go to the Cage? My brother is never going to let us, after what had happened last time." Nick said. "Don't worry, I think I can find a way"

The chief was sitting on his new desk, reading what the inspector had left for him. How could he investigate the whole camping? Even the inspector couldn't do it. He closed the plastic folder and left it aside. He sat still, thinking the inspector's last words. He opened the door and called a junior officer to step inside. "We will continue the investigations, hoping that we could find something useful," he said looking at the young officer. "I want you to go to the prisons and talk with that convict, make him admit his crimes. You know what I am talking about, don't you."
"Before you leave," the chief said, "call Mr Kotsabis." The officer nodded and left the room. Chief Panagou knew that this was the easiest way to close the case, force the prisoner to accept his guilt. However, as long as he didn't speak, the police had to wait in the camping. A knock was heard and the door immediately opened, revealing Mr Yannis' scared face.
"Relax Mr Kotsabis, you're not here to be questioned." Chief Panagou said. "I.. I am waiting for a call, sir." Mr Yannis said. "fro...m Mr Heusmann" he hadn't even finished talking and his phone started vibrating. "Excuse me for a moment please," he said, walking to the edge of the room. You could see his pale face, his body trembling. Mr Yannis was getting sacked sooner or later and he had been working there for 25 years.
The chief couldn't understand exactly what they were saying, so he sat in silence, listening to Mr Yannis getting yelled at. Mr Heusmann's voice could be heard from a mile away.
Yannis turned to the officer, calmer that the storm had passed, "Why did you call me here sir?" he asked. "I wanted to ask you when does your boss arrive Mr Kotsabis" "He will be here in two days sir, now if you excuse me I have many things to do." Mr Yannis answered and left the room. This was the end of Mr Yannis in this camping, and maybe this was the end of the camping as a whole

A whole week passed and Nick barely saw the other two. He went for a swim with Jim once or twice, but that was all, Jim had given up on his attempts to cheer him up. It was late Friday evening that his mother opened the door of the trailer and called him and Anne "Come on kids, some policemen are wishing to speak to all of us" He jumped out of his bed and left his phone sitting alone on his bed, he hadn't left it for a week.
Jim, on the other hand, spent that week differently. He was waking up at six and slept really early. He continued training, adding an hour of jogging in the mornings, he kind of bulked in his chest and shoulders and he was forming his abs. On Thursday he went to the mirror that had on the closet, took the razor he had bought a week before and cut off the hair that was growing under his nose. He was getting what he wished for, day by day, only if he could spend a little more time with Nick and Luke. They had felt apart since the incident with the fries and Luke was clearly avoiding both of them. On Friday evening, he left his trailer and went in front of the mini-market where the policemen asked everyone to be at seven.
He was from the first to arrive, but he spotted Nick in the crowd and he went next to him. "Hey Nick, how are you?" "Lukas is ditching us for Helen like they are married or something and you... What were you doing this week Jimmy?" He looked him deep in the eyes with a terrifying look demanding answers "Ehm...you know... nothing special, just vibing" his answer didn't erase Nick's big frown.
" You are definitely hiding something here" Nick knew Jim well, he could tell if he was hiding something and he had changed a lot the past one week. "I know what it is," Nick said looking at Jim's shoulders, "you're working out," he said and punched his chest friendly "and a lot... Jimmy are you ok?" "Can you shut up the whole camping is here I'll explain to you everything but later."
The crowd became bigger and bigger, gradually as more Campers were approaching. The head policeman stepped on a table, in which Mr Yannis is drinking daily his coffee, so he could be seen by everyone. "Okay people, our investigation was bigger than usual. We didn't find any footprints on the bathrooms, which made the operation difficult, we conclude that the killer was a drug addict who escaped the night of the murder and was found some hours later, I shall declare that the case is closed"
The crowd started clapping and congratulating the police force, the investigations were finally done and campers could relax and enjoy their holidays once again. Nick turned to Jim " So, now that we don't have to worry about that murderer and we have much time to spare shall we start this conversation?" "LUKAS" Jim yelled him to come closer to him. Jim didn't want to lie to his friend, but he could avoid this conversation as much as possible.
"You won't get away so easily" Nick whispered as Lukas was walking towards them. "So guys how are you, haven't seen you so much lately" "Yes because you have been ditching us for Helen, you have to stop being so obsessed with her," Nick said. "Nick you know that's not true and you both know how much I want her, please try to understand" Luke tried to defend himself in the verbal battle that was coming towards him.
"So what happened, huh? Kiss, Did you put your tongue into her mouth... Did she gave you a blowjob!" Jim's eyes were full of excitement. "No you perv, we just talk and stuff, nothing has happened" Luke lied, he didn't know if Helen wanted people to know. "So you've been wasting your time then, good job ruining your summer vacation Lukas" Nick laughed. " Ok, ok I'll give you my word that something big will happen until the end of the summer"
"You better do something or else you owe us dinner at Pax*," Jim said. "It's a deal" They shook hands like they were businessmen.
"So I guess we'll meet at the beach in 30' ?" Luke proposed and started walking towards his trailer. "Wait, Luke, we didn't..." He was already gone. "Well, Nick seems like we are going to the beach" Jim smiled and walked away.
We are officially in the half of the story, I'm sorry that I posted a day later than usual, anyways hope you liked it. What did you think about Inspector leaving and the case being closed?
