Chapter 4: A rose and a thorn
Adeline woke up the next morning, the light hitting her pale skin. She excitedly got up and got ready for school, running downstairs.
"Adwin, Adwin, I need my lunch!"
Adwin gave her lunch and breakfast. "Have a good day, and don't forget the multiplication tricks I taught you."
"Nine times anything is that thing times ten and minus itself, eleven times a double digit is the double digit times ten plus itself!"
"Good. Have fun!"
Adeline left. Adwin ate his breakfast, then started sketching the story he heard last night.
Knights have armor, which is metal, it shines... Lightning and a monster... It was raining... Adeline and Alora were the knights... There.
He had a perfect sketch. Now it was time to color it. He used a lot of cool colors, but the monster had evil, blood-red eyes and long, lightning-colored claws. He smiled at his work, putting it on the fridge. Alora came downstairs, stretching, and made herself a breakfast, toast and cheese. Eating it, she then pulled a laptop from her backpack, typing a story.
"Whatcha doing?" Adwin asked.
"Oh, I'm an author, I write for a living."
Adwin nodded. "Cool."
Alora smiled. "What do you do for a living? Art?"
Adwin raised an eyebrow. "Actually, I work as an art teacher at the school, so I'm going to need to head out soon. If you want, you could come with me."
Alora nodded. "Thanks. I don't want to be alone, for some reason it feels like someone is watching me."
Adwin nodded. "Alright."
He brought her with him and introduced her to the kids.
"Hey, is she Alora Charity!?" One of the kids asked.
"Yes, why?"
The kid jumped in his seat. "I have your book, Night of the Dragons! Can you sign it please?"
Alora smiled. "Alright." She signed the book. The kid smiled. "Thank you!" He said, squealing. Alora giggled.
"You're welcome."
She went back to writing as Adwin taught. Soon, the class ended, and the nextckass came in. It was Adeline's class.
Adeline had some close friends, names Erik, Lilly, and Gene. Eric was a strong kid who loved to play baseball and soccer, Lilly was a shy girl who liked anime, and Gene was... Well, nobody knew if they were a boy or a girl. They liked to play football, and they also liked science.
Adeline smiled. "This is Alora, that person I told you guys about!"
Gene smiled, Lilly nodded, and Erik grinned. The three said hello.
"Hi," Alora said, smiling.
"Let's sit down, my legs are tired," Lilly said.
"They're aways tired," Erik teased."
Lilly frowned. "Are not."
Erik sighed. "Fine, let's just sit down."
Soon, the class started. Adwin helped the students with their clay models of animals while Alora typed her story.
After a while, school ended. Adeline ran to Alora and Adwin.
"Adwin, Alora, can Gene, Lilly, and Erik play?"
Alora looked at Adwin.
"Sure, as long as they don't destroy the house," Adwin said.
"Yay!" Adeline said, running back to her friends.
The six walked home, Adeline talking with Lilly and Gene while Erik talked with Adwin. Alora was lost in her thoughts.
Suddenly, a car was coming, about to hit her. Adwin quickly acted, grabbing Alora's bag and pulling her back as the car passed safely.
"Are you alright?" Adwin asked, as the kids stared. Alora shakily nodded.
"Y-Yeah, just scared, is all. Are you okay?"
Adwin nodded.
That was close, who was that?
Gene poked Adwin. "I got it on video. Want to see?"
Adwin nodded. "Thanks, Gene."
They all looked at the video. They could see the person, but nobody recognized him.
Alora's eyebrows went together. "Maybe he didn't mean to almost hit me."
Adwin was really angry, he hated when people didn't look where they were going. I swear, if I see that man again, he'll go deaf from yelling.
Adeline poked him. "Adwin?"
He looked up, smiling. "Yeah?"
"Are you okay?"
Adwin sighed. "Just... Angry, and scared. Don't worry about it. Let'sget home."
Everyone nodded. They kept walking home, this time very cautious of cars.
Meanwhile, the man grumbled. "If I can't get her dead, I'll just have to bring her back alive."
