Short Story
Molly's P.O.V.
I walked down the hallway of the extremely prestigious Madame Daxtereaux's Dance Academy to see my one and only locker-neighbor, Brandon. Let me give you a bit of back-story about us.
"Hey loser, what book are you reading now?" Brandon, the school bully asked me. I whispered, "Harry Potter," and he cringed. "Ew, we're in first grade, loser, not fifth!" he remarked, and sat in his usual place in the seat behind me. I had no idea why he hated me, and anyway, what's so bad about reading Harry Potter? I reached into my backpack and grabbed a bag of Sour Patch Kids. While ripping it open, I could smell the sweet yet sour scent of the sugar. For some odd reason Sour Patch Kids made me feel better whenever something like this happened. I buried my head in my book and kept reading and chewing, ignoring Brandon's comments. I always had to be careful to not get the sugar between the pages.
Ever since then, we've had a battle every time we talked... but we actually haven't talked in 2 years. In my opinion, that is good. The longer I don't have to deal with him, the better. It's senior year of high school, and I've noticed that he sometimes stares at me. Weird, right? I mean, he is cute, with his handsome blue eyes and fluffy brown hair, but not enough to make me swoon or anything.
So back to now. I unlocked my locker with ease and put my Physics of Ballet binder on the top shelf. Checking my watch, I saw that I have about 2 minutes left to get to Ballet Scripts class. So I quickly stuffed my notebook into my satchel and held Bunheads in my hand. I closed my locker and heard a deeper voice say, "That's really good book," and I turned around to see Brandon. I sneered and thought, what does he want? "Well how would you know? You probably haven't read a book unless you were forced to," I said, glaring into his ice-blue eyes. He looked taken aback. "Look, I have changed since we last said anything to each other. I'm sorry. Can we start over?" I blinked. After an few awkward seconds, I said, "I'm going to be late for class. We can talk after school." The moment those words left my mouth I regretted it. What was I thinking? As I walked down the hallway, I could hear him say, "Wait, I have next period with you!" I stopped, rolled my eyes and noted, "And what?" "I thought I could walk with you," Brandon suggested. I simply replied, "No." He pretended not to hear me, so I said, "What do you want from me? Tutoring?" He shook his head and looked around to make sure nobody else was around. "I think I like you," Brandon nearly whispered. I could feel the tears welling in my eyes. "Why? Why would you pull a prank on me like this? It's Valentine's Day for Cupid's sake!" I said as I saw Nix peeked her head out of the creative writing class. "Wait, Molly, please," he begged. I turned back to him. "Just stop it okay. Leave me alone," I whispered, and I walked over to Nix. "Want to sit together today?" my best friend asked me. "Sure," was the answer as we headed to the front of the classroom. I looked back over my shoulder at Brandon, just to see him walk into class sulking. "Alright class, we are going to read a play where..." Mrs. Maylor droned for the next few minutes. I opened my textbook and got the gist of the story within seconds - the guy gets the girl in the end. Classic cliché. Like this would ever happen in real life.

The bell rang and I put my notebook into my satchel. "What do you want to do now? School's over," Nix said. "I'll meet you at your car in a few minutes. I need to go to my locker," I replied, not thinking before I said it. "Okay, see you later," she waved and headed out the back door.
I opened my locker to find a familiar face next to it. Ignoring it, I shoved two of my binders onto the middle shelf, and instead took out my Playwrights textbook. After closing my locker, I twirled around to go find Nix. "Hey, I thought you said we could talk," Brandon yelled after me. Some people looked at him and them at me. I knew what they were thinking. The little geek and the popular guy in a relationship? This would definitely start rumors.

After getting strange looks from nearby students, I ran after Molly. When reaching her, I put my hand on her shoulder and said, "Please, just one minute. I will change your mind about me." Her eyes looked pained. "Talk then," she commanded. I gulped then asked, "Will you come to the Valentine's Day Ball with me?" She stared at me for a few seconds, and sighed, and flat-out said, "No. I'm really sorry, I just can't," she told me. Molly stepped around me in one fluid motion and went out the school's back door.

I ran directly to Nix's bright green car and jumped into the passenger seat. "Can I stay over tonight? My parents are out of town," I asked her. She grinned. "Yeah! On one condition though," she said, her face darkening. "Fine, what is it?" "We are going to the Ball tonight," she finished. I gaped. Did she know what Brandon had asked. "No! I won't. But I need somewhere to stay," I countered. This wasn't good. I sighed and finally said, "Fine. But I will not wear anything red or pink!" She did a little happy dance and yelled, "We are going downtown to go dress shopping!!!"

I looked into the mirror and held my breath. The first five dresses I had tried on were not too flattering on my body. But what I saw now was.... literally breathtaking. It was a mid-thigh length coral colored dress. It had long mesh sleeves connected to the sweetheart neckline of the coral fabric. With opaque tights, this would become a killer outfit. I walked out of the dressing room to find Nix out there, standing in a purple tulle a-line knee length dress. "Alright, I think we have found it," she said and started fangirl clapping. "Let's go pay. You can borrow my black opaque tights when we get home," she added. Sometimes I honestly thought that this girl was a mind-reader.

As I stood in front of Nix's ceiling-to-floor mirror, I stared yet again. What am I going to do if I see Brandon? Ignore him? Better yet, ignore the fact that I like him? I applied the last of my mascara and pulled on my black high-top canvas shoes, then went downstairs. "Wow, Molly, you look so pretty. And I love the canvas sneakers," Nix told me. "Thanks! You do too," I said, motioning to her dramatic purple dress with matching heels. She was only five feet tall, so she had to wear heels whenever possible.

I walked in the théâtre door, and stood against a wall. I figured that if no girls came up to me, I'd just hang out with the loner guys. "Hey, dude, I thought you asked that geek to the dance?" my friend, Roy, yelled over the music. I shook my head, "Nah, she.... couldn't make it," I replied, hesitating. "Man, that sucks. Tell you what, go dance and have fun with the popular girls. You know, the ones who do modern dance. Don't get stuck on that ballerina. They always play hard to get," Roy lectured me. I nodded, hoping he would leave me alone.

Nix and I walked through the dramatic entrance to hear our favorite song come on. It was "On Top Of The World" by Imagine Dragons. We immediately ran to the middle and started dancing. My eyes got caught on a sad looking guy leaning against a wall. I squinted and noticed that it was Brandon, of all people.
I went over to him and took a deep breath. "Hey, I'm really sorry for earlier today," I said. He looked up at me and replied, "I thought you said you wouldn't come." "I was forced by my best friend." "Me too." There was a moment of awkward silence, and when the music turned to a slow song, he asked, "Would you care to dance?"
I smiled, "Sure." He put his hands at my waist and mine travelled to link behind his neck. Brandon looked at his feet and softly said, "I've liked you as long as I can remember." I was speechless. After pulling a shaky breath, I said, "I like you too, Brandon." Feeling a wave of confidence, I kissed his right cheek. He turned and his lips met mine.
When the song ended, we didn't. We danced all throughout the Valentine's Day Ball, and let me tell you, that was the best night of my life.
Did I say before that this only happens in movies or books? Well, scratch that. This is my story, and you have reached the happy ending.
