CHAPTER 5: Fly

Stacey

It's been 3 years since Kendrix left. We keep in touch by sending letters. I concede that I'm bad at writing as I stop having my tuition after my parent's death. But he never comments that in his writings. Contradictorily, he focuses more on my happiness and that he always wishes me to be happy every day at the end of every letter he writes for me.

However, things don't work really well if we can't see each other. My smile becomes scarce as the days go by.

"Our little sissy looks upset back there, Sally." I can hear my elder siblings' conversation upstairs. When I'm having a hard time, so do them. Throughout the week, they have been raking through their brains to fix my face since Kendrix's departure. I wonder how important my smile is to them. "What should we do?" Kyle's frustration is audible through the coral walls.

"Let's go on a vacation," suggests my sister. "Go tell her to pack. We will be leaving tomorrow. I can't bear seeing her cry every day." As quick as I can manage, I jump onto my bed and pretend to be sleeping as Kyle arrives, knocking on the wall of my room.

"Stace?" As I'm too tired to respond, I don't respond until he decides to enter. Taking a seat by the side of my bed, Kyle pats my arms before whispering to me, "Sally is going to take us out for a holiday." His delighted tone makes him sound as if he's singing. But soon, he sighs in defeat. "I've got your boyfriend's letter, sis."

Almost immediately, my eyes snap open and I jerk my body to face my brother, still lying on the bed but with my glassy eyes staring into Kyle's. "Really?" Excitement drives me to a sitting position. "Let me see, please." Indeed, there is a letter covered by a big bubble in his right hand. But as I'm about to touch the letter, Kyle moves his hand away.

"Uh uh, I'll give it to you unless you settle down and pack your things up." He means for the good. But I can't stop myself from rolling my eyes. "Be a good girl sis, I know you'll be," he says, patting my head when I look at him, pouting with a speechless squint. "Please, we need you to be happy. We want to hear you sing again. It's a sad case that you have stopped doing that after the angel boy left."

"I've had enough thinking about him," I lie while forcing myself not to shed a tear. "Can I have a hug, brother?" My voice cracks when I request for Kyle's hug. Without hesitation, he opens his arms before I lean onto him, sinking my face on the crook of his neck and on his shoulder. His tail shines beautifully in orange and gold, reminding me of our father. It is then my shoulder turns wet and I realise Kyle is crying silently. "Kyle!" Breaking the embrace, I rub his tears away with my knuckles hastily. "Please don't cry. I'm really sorry, I'll go get packed now alright?" I apologise continuously while Kyle's lips curl into a light smile.

"Told you I'm sad," says Kyle with a light chuckle. His grey hair sways due to the soft sea wave. It's a miracle for us mermaids to have our tears visible though we are crying in the ocean. It sounds unnatural for a reason but here I must say: science can't explain everything because it is the wonder of fantasy. The wonder of our world. Of us.

I scramble down from the bed with my feet on the ground as I start packing, wondering where Sally will take us then. Excitement soon takes over my whole feeling right now and I chuckle.

"Happy already?" Kyle sniffles and wipes his tears away.

"Yes. I wonder where the best place to go is," I admit with a giggle. My happiness sounds pure.

"It's highly classified," Kyle answers mysteriously while he sticks his tongue out at me, leading out a groan from me in frustration. "I've put the letter by the lamp. Don't forget to open it," His reminder snaps me back to reality as I watch him whisk out of my place, leaving tiny air bubbles all over.

Moments later, I leap towards the bedside lamp and pick the letter up. Sadly, it's not Kendrix's letter but his brother's, Kenjax. What will Kenjax say in the letter? Curiosity fills my soul as I unleash the letter nervously. Even my hands are shaking.

Will it be bad news?

The words are handwritten as always. I admire the twins' handwriting because they are awfully elegant and beautiful.

Dear Princess Stacey,

Hi. This is Kenjax writing. Despite speaking affectionate vocabularies, I am going straight to the point.

Kendrix is currently fighting his bad side as it resurfaces more frequently than the beginning. Whilst for his injuries where the jaculus had bitten him, it was cured by the doctors and that you're not need to worry about it.

Father has been restraining him from going outside because of his double personality. I swear he has requested for more than a thousand times to see you at Roclime's, but sadly, our father always says no. I know it's been three years, but time is just a matter.

We have been told that you are losing your liveliness day by day and this isn't what we want. What Kendrix wants to be exact. Think positive. Whether you like it or not, the sun still rises and sets every day. So be your spirit. Let it be the sun instead of the rain cloud. Although rain clouds cover the sun often, we will represent the strong wind that blows it away. Do stay strong and keep smiling. This is what I remind my twin brother when he gets emotional.

Lastly, Kendrix and I would love to tell you that we are wishing you a happy birthday for tomorrow. Happy Birthday Princess Stacey. Though this is the third time that Kendrix may not be celebrating your birthday, remember, there is always a next time. Opportunities are countless. When time has come, it will be a surprise for you I promise.

Yours sincerely,
Kenjax

It is surprising for the angel brothers to know my birthday without me telling them. I remember seeing flow of memories about Kendrix's past and present when we were kissing. So I bet it is because of the kiss. Kendrix must have told his brother about it and asked him to deliver the letter for me, keeping me up to date.

Putting the letter back into the envelope, a genuine smile appears on my face before a snicker vibrates through my throat.

"Stacey, lunch is ready!" I can hear my sister's knocking on the ceiling. She is talking to me in her bedroom. Not going to take too long, I swim up, knock the rocky surface before I voice out the answer.

"Coming!"

***

Kendrix/Feiss

I wake up in the middle of the night, gasping really hard. My hands are chained to the bed so I can't leave the bedroom. I am terrified as this is what happens to me every night - waking up from a nightmare.

Suddenly, I can feel my back aches intensely as something sharp and enormous is throbbing my skin from the inside. "Drix?" I can hear my brother through my blurred hearing. The door creaks to a large gap before I can see him enter the room.

"Jax.." I scramble down the bed and staggers toward him. The chains clink-clunk when they make contact with the ground as I move, until they stop me halfway, keeping me restrained from going further. "I'm... in pain..." I can feel my forehead and temples wet with cold sweat before I fix my gaze on Kenjax's. In his eyes, I've seen pain. Pain that only a heart could feel.

Upon seeing how hard I'm trying to endure the pain in my back, Kenjax runs towards me before hugging me in his lap, whispering, "It's okay buddy. I'm here." His action reminds me about what I did to Stacey earlier when she was crying, showing me how Stacey feels when she was in my lap - secured and calmed.

Nevertheless, my back keeps aching and turns my fearful pants into a loud scream in agony until everything stops. I breathe heavily and eventually collapse in my brother's embrace, eyes closing out of exhaustion.

"Your wings are majestic, little brother." Kenjax whispers into my ears with delight which makes me reopen my eyes to take a look at them.

They are indeed beautiful. In fact, they are glowing. Glowing in purple, blue and a little bit of green. Glow-in-the-dark wings? Sounds cool to me. "I love them," I whisper with a tired chuckle.

"Your shirt is torn. I'll get you a new one,." says my brother as he stands up and walks toward my wardrobe. He grabs a plain white T-shirt before tossing it to me. This shirt has two gashes cut specially for my wings and it suits me well.

"Thank you, brother."

"Not at..." He trails off when he turns to look at me again. "...all." At the same time, I can hear the chains clinging loudly as I can feel Feiss resurfacing. My vision changes and my body temperature drops rapidly, letting out my moan in misery.

"R-run.." I cough out. "Now!" I raise my head to look at him. The colour of ruby red consumes the original brown of my eyes when my voice chokes in beneath my throat, leaving me gagging.

Now I'm Feiss. Kendrix is no more. Breathing in the air, I let out a low sinister laugh upon resurfacing once again. The other angel boy has tried to back away but my sharp gaze catches him. "Miss me?" And he shivers upon my question.

I remember the night before I am chained to this filthy bedroom. The night I forgot to hide my demonic scent and woke the knights up. Now, I won't make the same mistake again. Chuckling darkly, I unfold my new wings and paint a little black on the tips.

"Leave my brother alone, you sick bastard!" The angel seethes as he unfolds his white wings and flaps them hard at my direction, forming a strong wind current that stops me from ruining the wings.

With that, I tut at his action while shaking my head. "You should be flying away by now because..." I jerk my hands forcefully until the chains no longer restrain my will. "I'm getting free."

"Bring it on, demon," growls the angel boy fearlessly. "I'm not afraid of you."

"You are making the wrong choice, angel," I comment before charging at him with my wings spread wide. We fight through punches, but the boy is careful while sending attacks at me. "Aww, still looking out for your little brother, don't you?" Just as expected, he is distracted by my provoking words and eventually, this provides me the chance to return the favour.

With my swiftest move, I grip on the angel's neck and tighten it. Gritting his teeth, the angel tries so hard to punch me but his hands cannot reach me. It takes only a few seconds until he's hanging in the air without his wings flapping. For not to wake the others up, I drop the angel to the ground instead of smashing him to death. His wings retract as he lands on his back, his chest rises and falls when he breathes heavily for air.

As gentle as I can manage, I land on the ground without making any noise. Smirking victoriously, I stride towards the angel squats down. "Tsk tsk," I shake my head and eye him with a judging look. "I thought you'll be stronger."

The angel is about to sit up but my red eyes intensified in terms of colour. Honestly, I love this power so much because seeing him struggle under my dark restriction is really amusing. Such vulnerable side of him makes me want to feed on him. I wonder what angel blood tastes like.

"W-what are you doing?" As if he has noticed my plan, he begins to squirm under the restriction spell. "Sto-" I cover his mouth when he furrows his eyebrows, demanding me to stop using his talking eyes. His voice turns out becoming a slur when I lean closer to the crook of his neck.

Maybe it is due to my good mood, I decide to give him a chance. Thus, I have my fangs grazing on the soft skin of his neck. "Tell father that I'm going out to find the mermaid."

Still glaring at me, I'm answer by his protesting hum until my needle-like fangs sink into his skin unmercifully, leading him to scream under my palm. As his golden blood flows out, I devour the liquid without second thought, causing him to moan either in pain or pleasure.

The blood tastes like sparks. And it is burning me away slowly. I can feel it.

But I try to remain calm and arrogant to show him who is actually in charge right now. So, I ask again, "Yes or no?" Finally, he hums in approval, leading out my compliment to his ears. "Good boy." Before leaving, I undo the restriction spell on the angel while smirking at him, though there is bitterness in my tone. "Thanks to your blood, I am vanishing. But I wish to see the girl I love before I die." With the thought plastered in mind, I open the windows and fly out of Zyton without hesitation.

***

Back to Stacey

"Are you ready, Stace?" It's my brother who is calling for me, leading out my warm smile.

"Yup, I'm ready," I answer with a rhythmic tone while shouldering my pouch which is not too heavy. As Sally has mentioned about paying a visit at our grandmother's, it isn't necessary to bring a lot of snacks there. So that's why I can carry the bag with ease.

"Come on. The storm is approaching. We have to go now," Kyle urges as he darts into my room and grabs my wrist. This time, he makes sure that I am catching up by turning to check on me sometimes. Then there is Sally, waiting at the gate. At the sight of Kyle and me, she waves at us to follow her. Her ballet slipper coloured tail flaps up and down healthily as she swims towards the direction we should be heading. Her action looks graceful if it is seen from behind.

By looking at her speed, I can tell that she is excited about the trip. Indeed, all of us love to visit our grandmother. It's just the distance between our kingdom is far from where she lives. We've asked her to come live with us before, but she insisted to stay there with the reason that our grandfather's bones are buried under her house. To make it clearer, she doesn't want to leave her husband, which is our grandfather.

Although she might have the blood of a royalty, she lives there alone like a normal citizen in the ocean with no servants, no other relatives and no grandchildren circling around her with joy. She somehow enjoys being lonely, I guess. Or maybe it is because no one can ever understand her true feelings, so she prefers not to tell.

It is early in the morning as we decide to take off before daybreak. Therefore, Roclime's is covered in darkness. As our tails are flicking to bring us forward or change directions, they glow dimly with our own colours. Soon, we've swam out of Rainbow Corals and Roclime's entirely. The world outside our kingdom would be full of vicious creatures. "Be careful. There might be sharks roaming here," reminds my sister as we continue on our journey. Kyle and I nod with a hum upon her reminder.

But speaking of sharks, here comes one of them talking to me, "Hey, Stacey! What are you doing here?" Actually, she's my friend, Vivian. As I've saved her before from a loose net, she remembers me since the day and we even become friends. We use to talk less because I'd never left my hometown alone before, so the chance to meet her in personal is close to zero. "What are those for?" she asks, jerking her head at my pouch.

"Hi, Vivian. We are going on a vacation. What are you doing here?" I greet and ask back. It is quite surprising to meet her again after so many days have passed.

"Oh, today is my turn to guard here. Have fun Stace, I'll tell the others to let you pass," says Vivian as she swims away from us and I assume she is planning to inform the other sharks about us passing their territory.

"Really? Thank you Vivian! Have a nice day onwards," I call out at her with my hand reaching out to wave at her although her tail is facing me already. My voice echoing throughout the darkness.

But then, her voice echoes from a distance. "Happy Birthday Stacey!"

Her action drives out Kyle's snort and Sally's chuckle. Both of them are pleased to see me making new friends, although it is not under their watch. "Thank you, Vivian!" I shout back in a friendly way so that my voice can resonate throughout the water waves. However, nothing respond to me this time, telling me that she has already swum to an area which is out of her hearing range limit.

Focusing back to the route, I remain smiling with my racing heart as I know that today will be a good day. It will be even though Kendrix is not here with me once again.

I have to reassure him that I smile every day. At the same time, I also have to believe in him. But embracing a hope that I can give him a helping hand, I'll have a different birthday wish this year.

The routine lasts for an hour. By the time we take a short rest, it is almost daybreak. The sun is poking its orange head out from the mountains as I can see its reflection pasted on the surface.

"Let's take a rest here," suggests Sally as she pants alongside with two of us from the back. We've reached the sea surface before finding rocks to perch on. The sun is enormous between the mountains and the rocks here provide the best seats for the best view.

Once the sun rises completely, Sally then ushers us to keep going. Kyle and I nod in response while both of us are chewing on the snack I've brought from home. "May I have some?" She asks while poking her hand into my snack bag without even waiting for me to say 'yeah'. I sigh inwardly as she speeds up to guide us from the front.

"Can I sleep in your lap, Kyle?" I ask while yawning at my brother.

"Sure," he says, which makes me feel delighted until I squeak. "But I'll throw you away when my arms are sore."

"We're here already, Stace. Sleep is not needed for now," interrupts my sister from the front before I can even voice out to tongue-fight with my brother, though in a fun 'sibling' way. Not long after, our grandmother's house is clear in our views after we have passed several dangerous volcano holes and a field of pale green coral reefs.

"It's granny's house!" I use to call my grandmother 'granny'. Although it sounds informal, my grandmother and I are just too lazy to care. "Granny!" I dart towards the front and into the opening double doors. Bubbles are formed because of my flapping tail. "Granny!" I call again while swimming delightfully into the living room. But to my horror, someone is sitting beside my sleeping grandmother.

"Long time no see. Little. Stacey," speaks a voice which I dread to hear. Our grandmother is asleep beside him and I assume he must have put a spell on her with his demonic power.

Feiss.

How does he know where my grandmother lives? And how does he know that I am coming here?

My actions stop and I can only stare at his presence with my mouth opened wide. "Stacey." I can hear my siblings catching up as both of them enter and join me. Their lips part when they see the uninvited demon boy.

"Kendrix?" The angel's name slips from Kyle's mouth. But sadly, this isn't him.

"Feiss. Feiss Jalco," Feiss corrects while standing up. "And please be quiet, the old lady seems tired."

"What did you do to our grandmother?" asks Sally with pure shock. Both my elder siblings slide their hands into their pouches and draw out their weapons. My sister's a bow with eel's bones, which there are tiny sharp branches lining it up. As for Kyle, he has a knife made from a wolf's fang. Well, correction, a werewolf's fang which makes it a lot larger than a normal adult wolf's.

"Easy. She is asleep before I arrive," he explains and stands up from the couch, aiming to approach us, especially me as I can see him staring straight at me. "I just want to meet your little sister here." And my instincts are always right.

"Get behind us, Stace," Kyle pulls me gently on the wrist and he is already blocking his body in front of me in a wink. Apparently, none of us seem to trust any word that comes out of Feiss' mouth.

***

Back to Feiss again

Stacey looks into my eyes with her emerald one in fear. Clearly, she is afraid of me, which makes me feel a little sad. Her siblings are protecting her from me and it is kind of annoying. Humming with a mischievous smirk, I shimmer my eyes again with intensified red while staring at them, stopping all of their movements except for Stacey's.

"Damn it. I can't move my body..!" The merman jerks his body but my demonic spell is stronger. Just as expected, he couldn't even move an inch away from his standing spot.

"Mine too...!" said the older mermaid as she meets the same fate as the merman. "Leave our sister alone, demon." Her tone sounds acid while her eyes never leave me. "She has nothing for you to take."

"But she has something for me to lose," I debate with a grin. "And I need to get to her so I can take it back." It's only a short matter of time until Stacey realises that she could escape. However, her swimming speed is nothing faster than my new wings. Within no more than 10 seconds, I've already reached her from behind given her a bear hug despite her struggles.

"Let me go!" Unfortunately for her, her action only tightens my embrace. Skilfully, I shove her up and carry her on my shoulder while making my flight towards the awaiting sky. Her legs reveal while her tail turns into a dress again when we've reached the surface and off the sea itself.

Stacey sobs all the way until I put her on a tree branch not too far away from the ocean. Once my hands leave her cold body, she quickly curls herself up while backing away from me. Her back touches the coarse tree trunk. "Look at me," I say while taking a seat in front of her, my wings retracted.

"No," she denies my request with her shaky tone. "You are going to kill me with my eyes staring at yours." Her teeth chatters until I can feel the jolt on my heart. "I know what you demons love to do, always..." she's obviously trying to sound strong, but her wavering voice reveals all of the secrets she tries to hide. "Y-you love to kill-"

"I'm not going to hurt you, Stacey," I interrupt, but this time, my tone is softer. "I'm coming here to say goodbye." Finally, the little mermaid lifts up her head from her knees. Her eyes hold mine with surprise.

"What do you mean?" she asks, confusion fills her innocent optics.

"I drank my brother's blood this morning." I answer. "The ichor is burning me away, but slowly." She heaves out a shaky sigh while looking at me. "So, I'm coming here to-" My words cease to be continued when she breaks me off with an unexpected hug.

"I'm sorry..." Stacey trails off when I can feel her cold breath landing on my neck. "It must be awful to be rejected wherever you go," she assumes, yet it is right. Although I'm not doing anything to answer her, not a gesture or a nod, she looks like she has found the answer on my face, still.

Soon, a bead of tear comes sneaking out of one of my eyes. And that is when I realise my eyes have betrayed me as she has seen the answers through them. Suddenly, my body is shimmering in white and the colour follows the shape of my veins, well, the angel's veins.

"Kiss me," she says, putting both of her hands on each side of my cheek. "...before everything is too late."

More tears come rushing out of my eyes as the light shines brighter in my body. I feel the pain, yet I make no sound upon it. Cupping her chin meekly, I lean down and kiss her hungrily. As if our minds click, she does the same on me too when kissing back. Her nails dig into the fabric of my shirt and I believe she can feel the resistance of my muscles underneath.

Slight moans and groans escape our throats when our tongues play with each other. Our eyes half-shut when our minds turn into a frenzy. It is amazing that I can get to see her background story through the kiss before my death. I would want those memories die alongside with me, so I won't feel alone anymore.

Parting away, both of us are panting for air. "I love you," I breathe out with a chuckle when she does the same with the same answer.

"I love you too." The light has reached my face, making me glow brightly like a diamond. Nevertheless, my state displays Stacey's mixed expression as I can identify fear, sadness, worry and pity from it. As the light burns me away, I begin to groan in pain. She wants to hug me, but I've stopped her.

"Don't," I say with my hand stretched and my palm facing her. "It might burn you too." The redness on my eyes is fading and I can feel it floats away from my body like ashes. After looking at my fading demonic presence, I take one last look at the mermaid, my warmest smile appears to reassure her as I utter, "Goodbye, Stacey."

***

Back to Stacey again

The light snaking around Feiss' body fades as the boy becomes unconscious. As a result, he drops from the tree branch.

"Feiss!" I cry the demon's name as loud as I can, but he doesn't seem to wake up. Thus, I try again. "Kendrix!!" The tree is tall. If he makes contact with the ground before waking up, he will not be alive anymore but becoming a cold corpse. I want to jump down and reach him, but my cowardice draws me back.

Feeling incredibly hopeless, I lean onto the tree trunk and sob on my own. The bark of the tree trunk is scratching my forehead but I don't care. I'm going to torture myself as a punishment for my own guilty.

"Stacey!" Once again, the angel's voice saves me. I turn my head away from the rough tree bark and eventually see him in my sight. His wings are flapping beautifully under the glimmering sun. They are the colour of my own tail and I love them. "I heard you," he adds through heavy breath when I burst into a chuckle.

"I thought you're dead," I admit while shaking my head somberly.

"Your call woke me, Stace," Kendrix clarifies and this time, his voice sounds coming inches away from me before spreading his arms pick me up from the branch. "And I couldn't believe you offered Feiss to kiss you, demons can lie, you know?" I grumble as she cackles in my bridal style embrace.

"But he sounded truthful." Kendrix shakes his head with a sigh as we depart from the branch. Eventually, I squeak in nervousness.

"You're too naive, you should go out and see the world," the angel suggests thoughtfully when I nod to acknowledge his points. Through his chest, I can hear his healthy heartbeat feel his spreading body temperature from its core - the heart. Soon, I am placed into the cold ocean water before Kendrix retracts his wings to drop by my side. His action causes a loud splash to take place. "And I think it's necessary to apologise to your siblings." He voices out nervously as I can see him swallow hard.

"Are you sure?" I ask to give him time to retreat. "You are going to be punished because of somebody else's wrongdoing, Drix."

"I am ready to face the consequences, your highness." His utterly solemn speech makes me shiver. But I giggle upon that before taking hold onto his hand. Like a dangerous siren, I pull him down into the ocean water with me and stop midway to make him a temporary bubble that holds roughly for 30 minutes. Then, we proceed on our journey back to my grandmother's house.

_____

"Urgh..." Kendrix winces upon the pain when my angry brother pulls his hair.

"He wasn't in control because of the surfaced demon, brother." I try to explain, but Kyle shoots me a dead look. "The demon is gone for good, he is clean now." Clean from guilt.

Breathing in and out angrily, Kyle lets go of my angel boy and threatens, "If you dare to hurt my little sister ever again, I will kick you until your gut is on the floor before feeding you to the sharks, do you understand?" Whimpering upon the threatening words, Kendrix nods with his shuddering shoulders.

He just needs time to calm down after all the things that had happened. With the thought plastered in mind, I sigh when watching my brother's leaving figure. Instead of punishing Kendrix or shouting bad words at him, Sally gives Kendrix a hug.

"I'm glad to know that you've recovered," she mutters through Kendrix's shirt when one of her hands ruffling his curly, black hair. "Now go and fulfill our little Stacey's wish, alright?"

"I'm going to do it with or without your call, your highness," he replies with a bow after Sally retreats from the hug. His smile looks brighter than the sun as he turns to face me. "Are you ready?"

Biting one side of my lower lip, I nod in excitement before the two of us swim together towards the direction of the ocean surface. We hold hands while walking up to the bank nearby. His wings unfold again as he carries me bridal style once again. Then, up we go with his wings slashing through the atmosphere.

"Don't look down, just focus on everything in front, or me," advices Kendrix as we are reaching for the pink and orange clouds. Giggling, I put out my hand to touch them. The clouds pass through my fingers like puffs of smoke.

"This is so wonderful and amazing," I comment before looking up at Kendrix. He is focusing on flying but he somehow lowers down his head to look at me with a longing smile. The feathers of his wings shudder due to the wind friction and air pressure.

"Yeah," Kendrix says. "I feel the same too." He stops looking to the front but at me. I want to tell him to concentrate in case we bump into something. However, he smashes his lips on mine before I can even voice out my thoughts. "Don't worry, nothing will bump into us." he breathes through the kiss before keeping it going.

As both of us retreat, I look at him straight in the eye which glimmers beautifully under the shadows. "Thank you for making my wish come true." And I plant a feathery kiss on his lips.

Kendrix smiles, "Happy birthday, Stacey Gems." And I snuggle up in his lap to make myself comfortable before he brings me back to his home, Zyton.

Today is the most different birthday for me in my life. It's a birthday which is full of memories with different tastes. A birthday with my family and lover. It happens just like what Kenjax had written in the letter: When time has come, it will be a surprise.

In the end, it is really a big surprise for me. You'll never know what's waiting for you until you discover the path unexpectedly and so be it, let the surprise come to you.
