Love Letters Part 6
Lan Zhan pushed him off so fast, his head was spinning. By the time Wei Ying opened his eyes, he was sitting in a puddle of a blanket.
All alone.
Why did that want to make him cry?
He had been so happy, just moments ago...having fun like they used to. Easy company, just happy together. But then he had gone and fallen for his best friend...and that had changed everything.
Maybe Lan Zhan knew and wanted to avoid him from now on? Maybe he had seen something in the way Wei Ying had looked at him? But to be fair, it was Lan Zhan who had initiated today's drama.
And how was Wei Ying going to face him after that?
The almost kiss.
A kiss worth dying for...Wei Ying felt electrified at the memory, those gorgeous golden eyes full of affection for him.
Their front door slammed and jolted him out of his thoughts. Lan Zhan had left.
He let out a breath he didn't know he was holding onto, lying back down in defeat.
Now what? If he had spoiled things with Lan Zhan...what would happen to them now? Would he have to leave? Of course, that would be the right thing to do...maybe he could go couch surfing with his brother until he found another place to live?
But the thought of leaving Lan Zhan broke his heart, and the tears did come then.
His mind showed him all of their happy times together, when they first met each other in university, how Lan Zhan had awkwardly held out his hand to shake, but Wei Ying was a hugger, and true to form, showed his friend how nice hugging could be. Only to learn later on that Lan Zhan only received hugs from his brother, and even then, not many. Lan Zhan had grown up lonely...those were the words he did not have to say. And Wei Ying had made up his mind right then, that Lan Zhan would never be lonely as long as he was around.
They kind of stuck together after that. Wei Ying’s naturally outgoing personality made him a magnet for more friends and trouble, but somehow he always managed to make room from the quiet, taller Lan, including him in activities he would never have otherwise participated in.
Gradually, they learned how to live with each other, understanding the way the other thought, the way they each moved around the other in perfect symphony.
When they had moved in together, it seemed like the best plan. Was definitely the best plan at the time. Wei Ying could not imagine living anywhere Lan Zhan was not, but now...
He must have fallen asleep because little tiny licks woke him up. Something incredibly soft and furry tickled his nose, and he sneezed. Sitting up, he saw Ji, the white rabbit had woken him up, licking his face.
He picked up the soft creature, burying his face in the fluffy fur and immediately feeling better.
"Wait...how did you get out?" He stood up precariously, mindful not to fall down again, and picked his way out of the blanket.
But when he got to their living room, he stood rooted to his spot.
It was one big mess.
The rabbits had escaped...though he was definitely going to figure out how, later. For now, he had to tidy this disaster up as soon as he could, preferably before Lan Zhan got back.
Wu was still missing, but there was chewed up paper pieces strewn all over the room. The floor was covered in bits of white paper, looking like a wedding hall confetti shambles.
It was everywhere!
Just when had the rabbits gotten out of their cage? Didn't Lan Zhan notice anything before he left?
That was a sobering thought. Was he too upset to notice? Now, Wei Ying felt bad.
He looked around for Wu, still holding Ji in case he got into trouble with something else, and discovered how the bunnies had made their escape. The cafe was lying on its side, clearly not strong enough to stay upright.
"Maybe this is why your previous owners left you outside?" Wei Ying grumbled, but immediately felt bad for saying it.
As fast as he could, he picked up the big pieces after depositing Ji inside the now upright cage. Then he began hoovering and found that the bunnies had chewed off the corner of all his copier papers. All the reams under his desk were ruined. And there was Wu, sitting guilty watching him from there.
Wei Ying was so glad to see him, he forgot his irritation and nuzzled the fluffy animal, giggling when he twitched his cute bunny nose too. Pushing him into the cage with fresh water and carrot sticks, Wei Ying patted Ji before surveying the room.
He was exhausted, but he had to find new paper, kicking himself mentally for not having refilled his printer when it had finished last night. He had been too tired to do it, and now he was going to need it first thing.
There was no extra paper.
Wei Ying looked hopefully under his desk again, but just the ruined reams stared back at him. He checked the never opened drawers, and their stationary cabinet, and found other things, but not more paper.
Maybe Lan Zhan would have some extra he could borrow?
Delighted with this new solution to his problem, Wei Ying boldly ventured to his bedroom door.
He paused outside, his hand on the doorknob.
He hadn't had any reason to go inside before, thus the only times were when Lan Zhan had let him sleep there. Now...it kind of felt foreign, to go in by himself, when Lan Zhan wasn't there.
You're just being silly, he told himself. When Lan Zhan comes back, you can tell him what happened.
But now he wished he had taken pictures of the chaos. Not for proof...just that it had been funny and he was sorry Lan Zhan had missed it.
He eased the door open and stepped inside.
Lan Zhan favoured pale blue and whites, and it suited him, Wei Ying mused, just looking around the room. It was immaculate like its owner, spotless and sparse, every item tucked away where it belonged. Neat and tidy were two words that were probably part of Lan Zhan's DNA.
There were two photos next to his computer. Wei Ying went to have a closer look. One was of Lan Zhan and his brother, a perfect photo for perfect brothers. They could have been twins except for the fact that Lan XiChen was smiling.
His attention drifted over to the second photo. It was of himself and Lan Zhan.
Wei Ying was surprised to see it.
He remembered the day they had taken these photos, because this was not the only one from that time.
Lan Zhan refused to take selfie with him, and on that day, Wei Ying didn't know what had come over him, but he had grabbed Lan Zhan's phone and kept his finger on the button that took maybe a hundred snapshots of them in a single minute. Lan Zhan was wrestling with him, trying to get his phone back, and this photo had captured them both smiling. Well, Wei Ying was grinning in triumph and Lan Zhan...Lan Zhan's mouth was trying to. In all those blurry photos, Lan Zhan had managed to find the one that was a clear picture of them both.
He lifted it up, his eyes resting on Lan Zhan's face. He was such a beautiful man, it hurt to look at him. It gave him a pang in his chest and he put it down quickly.
Now, where would Lan Zhan keep extra paper? Probably near his computer and the printer...so somewhere near his desk. He opened the bottom drawer figuring that if it was a heavy item, Lan Zhan's practical nature would make him put it there.
But when he reached inside, he saw next to the ream he wanted, a stack of familiar looking blue envelopes.
With blue stationary paper.
With rabbits in the corner.
And the too familiar scent of sandalwood.
He was drowning in it, as his mind tried to cope with this new information.
No...it couldn't be?
But why? Why did Lan Zhan have this paper...in his drawer?
Wei Ying sat down heavily, his mind reeling.
Lan Zhan was Bichen.
Bichen was Lan Zhan.
His fingers had clutched the spotless blue sheets in desperation and he thought back to the first letter.
Lan Zhan had gone and collected the first ever stack...and Wen Qing had said ten letters...from the very beginning, he had added his letter to the pile.
How do I tell someone that I like them?
His first question.
And Wei Ying had suggested he ask questions to find out if the person Lan Zhan liked, liked him back.
The person that Lan Zhan liked...
Lan Zhan had asked what kind of questions he should ask...
Honestly, Wei Ying should have thought about how the letters were getting to him so fast...even if the person used snail mail, it would take one day for him to get the message via email and post the next one to reach him the following day. But Wei Ying had been getting letters daily.
And then the interest in his favourite colour...Wei Ying couldn't breathe suddenly.
Lan Zhan had followed his instructions exactly. He had bought him flowers, red roses too. He didn't have to Google that to know what those meant.
Love.
Strong, passionate, ardent love.
There was a strangled noise at the door.
Wei Ying looked up to find Lan Zhan staring at him in horror, and then it got worse when he saw the blue papers clutched in his hand.
Their eyes met, silver clashing with gold. Wei Ying was unable to look away, not now, now that he knew how Lan Zhan felt.
But Lan Zhan said the person he liked had no idea...no idea.
Maybe that's why he was already turning around and walking away, and Wei Ying sprang up and ran after him, jumping over the couch to get to the door before Lan Zhan could escape.
Both of them were panting, him out of exertion and Lan Zhan out of panic.
Those beautiful golden eyes were filled with fear.
Wei Ying took a deep breath.
"My favourite colour used to be red." He whispered.
Lan Zhan looked confused.
"Used to be...until a few weeks ago. I like blue now." He stepped forward.
Lan Zhan was like a wounded animal, waiting for a chance to bolt for it.
Wei Ying was tired of waiting.
He could feel his heart beating in his ears, the pressure almost overwhelming. If he took this step, both literally and mentally, there would be no coming back from it.
But he was absolutely sure of what he wanted. Was it as simple as that? To take what he wanted?
"I like lotus flowers the best." He took another step forward.
Lan Zhan couldn't believe what was happening.
After their disastrous almost not kiss in the morning, he had gone out for a walk to clear his head. He needed a break from everything Wei Ying, the temptation he had almost, almost given into. How much he had wanted, how much he had needed to kiss this man in his arms, how much he had to fight himself not to do it, and pushing him away was like cleaving his own arm off.
But the look in those silver eyes, when he did it....
Lan Zhan hated himself.
It took a good few hours of freezing cold air and mindless walking to do it, but now Lan Zhan felt strong enough to return to their home, strong enough to be normal with Wei Ying.
Strong enough not to push him up against a wall and take those cheeky lips with his, bite that tantalising mole.
He opened the door and saw the rabbits were munching on carrot sticks and were fine, so that meant Wei Ying was up. He took off his shoes and coat, putting them tidily away, before going to his room, where-
Wei Ying was sitting on the floor.
Wei Ying had found the paper.
His blue signature stationary, the one his alter ego had used as Bichen.
Bichen.
Wei Ying knew everything now.
Lan Zhan could not bear it if Wei Ying was disappointed in him. That thought alone had him turning around and walking away. His first thought was to leave, run away from this epic catastrophe.
But Wei Ying was faster.
He blocked his path. And now he was coming towards him.
This time, it was Lan Zhan who couldn't move, rooted to the spot.
Favourite colour, blue.
Favourite flower, lotus.
Vaguely, Lan Zhan registered those words, filing them away in a secret safe place somewhere in his mind, as a silver fire began to burn him.
All he could see, was Wei Ying. All he could feel was his nerve endings on fire as Wei Ying came and stood right in front of him.
Wei Ying.
Beautiful and light, wonderful man that he was, was lifting his hands to cradle Lan Zhan's face, cool against the burning skin.
And then ever so gently, his lips touched his own and suddenly there were explosions of joy all around him, consumed by the fire that was this man. Sparks of electricity burned his skin until he couldn't stop himself from claiming this man, kissing him back with a bottled up ardour finally given its release.
He was pushing him back, pushing him into the wall, searching for purchase, kissing him because anything else meant death, kissing him because Lan Zhan wanted to live.
Lan Zhan wanted to love him.
More than anything else.
He was on fire, burning with need. When Wei Ying stopped to breathe, he finally came to his senses.
Silver eyes looked into his, happy, sparkling with joy.
Neither dared to speak.
Minutes went by, but they were content to just look. Everything was different because they were different now.
Wei Ying reached up to hold hold his face with one palm.
"I don't want to stop kissing you."
Lan Zhan easily complied, because this was the culmination of a dream come true. As his lips glided over hot, eager ones, he had wondered if if their first kiss was a fluke, a build up of excitement only in his mind, but when they kissed for the second time, he realised that this was magical, it was their magic, and it wasn't going to go away.
Somehow, they ended up on the couch, with Wei Ying draped all over him, just enjoying this newfound peace.
"I'm sorry. For not telling you the truth." Lan Zhan whispered. "And, there is something else you should know."
"What?" Wei Ying was alert now.
"Bunnies4Ever...it is me."
"WHAT!??? What do you mean?" Wei Ying searched his face.
"I like to...do that..." Lan Zhan hid his face in the Wei Ying’s chest, unable to look at him.
"But Lan Zhan...that's over a million dollars? Where did you get the money? This is the part where you're going to tell me you're a bank robber, isn't it? Oh my, I've fallen for a criminal!" He clutched his heart dramatically.
Lan Zhan pinched his cheek.
"Brother said I could...if I wanted to."
"As long as you're not doing anything dodgy with it, I'm fine. But I also have a confession to make."
"What?" Lan Zhan was sure he couldn't top that.
"I'm sorry too, for not telling you how I felt. Look at all the time we wasted." He sounded mournful but his eyes were still sparkling. "Actually..." He sat up.
He was as close as he could get to Lan Zhan, straddling his body.
There were times when Lan Zhan felt he couldn't breathe, when Wei Ying was looking at him in a certain way.
Like now.
"Lan Zhan, my Lan Zhan...Gege...my Lan Er-Gege...I love you. I love you, and only you...forever and ever." He whispered, enjoying the way those golden eyes widened, darkened and suddenly Lan Zhan was kissing him and kissing him, all over again, the salt of their tears binding their emotions, each desperate to convey what the other meant.
When they broke apart, Lan Zhan was holding him down with his body, a fierce look in his eyes.
"I love you. I love Wei Ying." He leaned forward and bit his mole.
"Ow...what was that for?" Wei Ying held him closer, his arms curling around his neck.
"Always wanted to." Lan Zhan told him proudly.
Wei Ying giggled and kissed his nose.
He was incredibly happy and from the way Lan Zhan was looking at him too, he was just as ecstatic.
Together, they could do anything.
The End
