Love Letters Bonus

The lockdown was over and everybody began making plans, somewhat tentatively. Wei Ying was super conscious about not posing a risk to anyone else, and Lan Zhan was super conscious about him being safe, so he never went out without a bottle of hand sanitizer and a mask.

Jiang Cheng had phoned him, asking Wei Ying to go out for a coffee, and surprisingly, Lan Zhan had agreed.

"I have the best boyfriend ever!" Wei Ying had exclaimed, and so of course, Lan Zhan had to prove it to him.

Jiand Cheng could roll his eyes however much he wanted outside; Lan Zhan couldn't care less. One long kiss later, and he reluctantly let Wei Ying go.

Besides, he had plans.

*******

"Why don't you propose already? You make me sick." Jiang Cheng was saying, giving him a shove.

But there was a twinkle in his amethyst eyes.

"Actually, Jiang Cheng, that's why I agreed, I mean I told Lan Zhan that it was your idea, but I want to do something special for him. You can help me choose it." Wei Ying shoved him back playfully.

Jiang Cheng made mock throwing up noises.

"You can't avoid it. It's part of your duties. I'll explain when we get there." Wei Ying grabbed his arm and they began running. "We don't have much time, either. On average, how long does it take to drink coffee?"

"Ordinary people or you?" Jiang Cheng smirked.

"Me." Wei Ying grinned.

"You can go back tomorrow morning, and he'll still be none the wiser." Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes.

"Let's hurry anyway. I don't want to be late."

Jiang Cheng took another look at his brother.

On a normal occasion, Wei Ying would have come back at him with another sharp retort...and the fact that he hadn't, well...that just showed him how much Wei Ying was stressing about what they were going to do. So he sighed internally and tried to be happier for his brother.

*********

It was dark by the time Wei Ying got home. And what was strange, was that their home was in complete darkness.

Was there a power outage?

He looked back outside; but no, other people had their porch lights still on.

Then, had something happened to his Lan Zhan? Lan Zhan always and without fail, kept the porch light on for him, ever since they had moved into their new home together. Worried now, Wei Ying hurried in, throwing his keys into their bronze bowl. It was forged in the shape of an eight petalled lotus flower, and Lan Zhan had insisted on buying it, saying it reminded him of Wei Ying. Therefore, it was the perfect gift for their new home because home was what they represented to each other.

He was drawn to the living room, where a single white stem candle was lit. Next to it, he saw something that made his heart skid to a stop.

It was a pale blue envelope, sealed and ready to be opened by eager fingers. Lan Zhan had written his name in beautiful calligraphy on the front.

His hands began to shake as he opened it, the letter still smelling of rich sandalwood.

"My dearest Suibian,

Follow the lights...

Yours,

Bichen.

Wei Ying carefully tucked the note back inside the envelope and put it in his pocket, his eyes already moist. Lan Zhan had used his precious blue stationary again, and surely it was for something special. Anticipation flooded his veins as he wondered which lights he was to follow, when he saw that someone had lit a path of tea lights.

He followed them outside, through the double doors, and out into the garden. There, on a small table, there was another candle, this time next to a blue lotus flower made out of paper. There was a strip of card that read 'pull me'.

Wei Ying pulled the card and the flower opened up to reveal two rings.

Warm hands stole around his waist, momentarily scaring him. But he leaned back against the strong chest, revelling in the warmth and safety Lan Zhan always provided.

"Shall we get married?" The deep voice said, right next to his ear.

Wei Ying shivered and turned around in his arms. Not wanting to wait, he planted his lips on long missed ones, sighing in contentment when Lan Zhan kissed him back.

When they both broke apart, and Wei Ying nodded, suddenly all the lights came, and cheers rang out, as people came to join them outside. Someone let out fireworks but Wei Ying could look nowhere else. Those golden eyes were mesmerising and holding him within a halo of love.

Somebody else started playing music, and food was brought out as a party began in earnest. Everyone Wei Ying knew was there; scary Wen Qing and lovely Wen Ning, Jiang Cheng, whom Wei Ying did punch for not telling him what Lan Zhan had planned, his sister YanLi and her peacock husband, his beautiful nephew Jin Ling, plus Lan Zhan's brother, Lan XiChen who kept sidling up to Jiang Cheng, resulting in many a frown being thrown his way.

Wei Ying went to get more drinks from the kitchen, and Jiang Cheng followed him there, looking behind him furtively.

"I don't know what he wants..." He whispered, as the man in question came to drink some water from their filter.

Wei Ying escaped from the kitchen as fast as he could, giggling to himself. Strong arms grabbed him, taking him to the side of their house, where they were completely alone.

"Lan Zhan..." Wei Ying had only time to say his name, before hot lips stole his breath, gliding over his in a matter of seconds.

Wei Ying curled around him, inhaling that wonderful combination of sandalwood and clean, fresh Lan Zhan, a delicious scent all of his own, kissing him back with gusto.

"Wei Ying is happy?" Lan Zhan asked him anxiously, when they stopped to breathe.

"I am, so so happy, my Lan Zhan. Are you?"

"Mn."

"Then, may I ask you for a favour?" Wei Ying smiled at him, his silver eyes sparkling in the moonlight.

"Anything." Lan Zhan promised.

"Will you come out with me tomorrow?"

"Of course. I will go anywhere with Wei Ying."

Wei Ying kissed his nose.

"Oi! We need you out here!" Jiang Cheng yelled.

Lan Zhan frowned.

Wei Ying knew exactly how Lan Zhan felt about Jiang Cheng, and he couldn't stop smiling as he took his hand and returned to the party.

YanLi was coming out of the kitchen with a cake, and what a cake it was!

In the shape of a blue lotus, each petal sculpted to perfection. She placed it on the table, and kissed his forehead.

"May you both be very happy together." She blessed them.

So far, Wei Ying had been holding everything in well, but at those words, he burst into tears, hugging her hard.

"XianXian..." She threw an apologetic look towards Lan Zhan, who smiled warmly at her.

Amidst still falling tears, the cake was finally cut.

*******

The next day, bright and early, a car came to pick them up. Lan Zhan tried to figure out where they were going, but nothing about the scenery seemed familiar, and Wei Ying was being tight-lipped about the whole thing.

After around an hour of driving on the freeway, the car turned off and drove down a dirt road, stopping at a pair of imposing red gates. Two dragons decorated the huge gates, their bodies part of the spokes in the structure, their faces outward and on guard, facing visitors.

"We have to walk from here." Wei Ying winked at Lan Zhan as he took his hand.

Wei Ying was flirting more than usual today, and Lan Zhan was feeling the effects of his attention very much. When he winked, Lan Zhan felt his stomach do flip flops, when Wei Ying smiled that special smile just for him, his heart began pounding painfully in his chest.

But when he winked...

Lan Zhan was head over heels smitten.

Trees lined a long and winding path, a beautiful avenue of cherry blossoms and willows. They walked in silence, enjoying the tranquility of this place, and each other's company. Larks sang them a song of welcome as the trees opened up to reveal a red temple, decorated much in the same way as the gates they had just passed through.

Lan Zhan followed Wei Ying as he climbed the steps to the top, where he took off his shoes. Lan Zhan copied him, still wondering what was going on.

Once inside, and his eyes had adjusted to the different lighting, his face was filled with wonder. All the walls and even the ceiling was painted with scenes from the Buddha's life, with intricate details. And at the far end of the great hall, stood a statue of Kuan-Yin, the Buddha of infinite compassion and mercy.

Together, they lit three sticks of incense and prayed, bowing three times.

They sat for a while, happy to dwell in this peaceful bubble before having to return to the outside world. When Lan Zhan felt that Wei Ying had had enough of being still, they stood up to leave.

But instead of heading towards the gates whence they had arrived, Wei Ying led him towards the back wall where a round wooden door slid back to reveal a lush green forest.

Lan Zhan could hear all manner of creatures now, aside from larks, jays and sparrows called out, amidst low sounding squirrels and other small mammals.

And there was something else...

The forest opened up to show them a beautiful stream. A wooden bridge curved over it like the arch of a brow. Wei Ying smiled once more before they both set foot upon the old wood. Water gurgled pleasantly beneath them, and upon the wide sides, someone had left them a half assembled lantern.

Wei Ying painted some characters on the sides of the white paper, before Lan Zhan lit the flame, and then they released it together, watching it fly high up into the sky.
