-So Far Away
I felt horrible. The signs were evident, threadbare clothing, slim figure, etc. I took my chances and asked, "May I ask who is..."
"My Mother."
His voice caught me off guard. It reminded me of fluffy pillows and polished piano keys.
"Oh...I'm sorry."
He slightly nodded and continued looking at the grave. The silence, however, was abruptly broken by the sound of a stomach rumbling. The boy's cheeks lit up in pink and turned away from embarrassment. I gestured for the boy to follow me. He was reluctant to leave with me. Then, I got an idea.
"I need your name."
"Yoongi."
I raised an eyebrow at him, "Full name."
He puffed his cheeks in annoyance.
"It's Min Yoongi." He pouted cutely.
Satisfied with his answer, I smiled, "Well, Min Yoongi, you're going away for a long time."
I had to bite my cheek to prevent myself from doubling over laughing.
Yoongi immediately let go of my hand.
"N-Noona, please...please don't!"
I didn't mean to make him cry. Thinking of a solution, I grabbed him by the shoulders and told him that it was a little joke. He stopped wailing, but tears and sniffles would still present.
'what do I do? Think, Eunyoung, think!'
Then, I had an idea.
❝ Snowflakes are falling, ever so slowly❞
❝Getting farther away❞
❝I miss you (I miss you)❞
❝I miss you (I miss you)❞
❝How much longer do I have to wait?❞
❝How many more nights do I have to endure?❞
❝Until I can see you? (until I can see you?)❞
❝Until I can meet you? (until I can meet you?)❞
I sang the last note, but by then, Yoongi-ah had stopped crying. This song was the one my parents sang to me. Before bed, when I felt sad, etc. I guess it really portrays the longing for another person's warmth. To want to feel loved by the person they miss. To bear the agonizing pain of counting the days for when you'll finally see them.
"Noona, your voice is pretty."
He gave a gummy smile. It was the most adorable thing I've ever witnessed. The way his face lit up and showed his toothy gin. I smiled and ruffled his fluffy hair.
"C'mon, Yoongi-ah! We're gonna get food!"
He shook his head furiously, "No, I'm not gonna let Noona pay! I'm enough of a burden for others anyways..."
That sentence broke my heart.
'Was he raised to think that he was a burden?'
I gave him a reassuring smile and patted his head assiduously.
"It's okay, Yoongi-ah! It'll be my treat."
"B-But-"
I didn't say anything and gave him a hug. And after practically begging him for me to buy him something, he defeatedly complied. We walked back to where my shop was, and there was a cafe next door so we could get some munchies for Yoongi-ah as well. We stepped into the cafe, its cozy aroma wafting from inside. In the far corner, there was a glistening piano that no one was currently occupying. I tapped the boy's shoulder.
"What would you like to eat?"
"A-Anything's fine, something inexpensive though..."
I walked over to the barista, giving them a greeting. I looked over at the menu.
'strawberry tart, tiramisu, and cupcakes...hmm...none of those are very filling though...'
I glance over at Yoongi-ah, he was admiring the brown piano.
'screw it, I'm buying one of everything.'
"Uh, yes, one strawberry tart, one tiramisu, one cupcake, and a caramel macchiato, please."
"That'll be $13.50."
I paid the cashier and left to find yoongi with the pastries in the bag.
There were only loud chatterings, but then, I suddenly heard Pachelbel's "Canon" being played beautifully on the piano. I turn to the person playing such a beautiful piece.
There sat Yoongi-ah playing passionately. His body moved with the music, and his hands gracefully hit the keys. I hated to disrupt his performance, but I knew he was hungry, so I nudged him lightly and told him I got the food. He shifted his way down from the piano bench and took my hand.
"I couldn't choose which one you liked, so I got you a little variety of things."
"You don't have to waste your time or money on me, Noona."
We decided to sit at the third table from the left, next to a guy who was making puns.
"But I want to, Yoongi-ah."
He silently munched on the strawberry tart, thoroughly enjoying it. I giggled at his adorableness. A 'ping' noise came from my phone, it was sunbae messaging me.
Sunbae:
EUNYOUNG-SSIIIIII
Me:

Sunbae:

Me:
Lollll so? I had to take care of smth.
Sunbae:

Me:

Sunbae:

Me:

Sunbae:

Sunbae:

Me:
Bye, Loser!
"Noona, who was that?"
"Somebody I know from work."
"Okay...What time is it?"
"uhh, 6:39."
His eyes widened with fear.
"Ah! I need to get back by 7:00! Or...or..."
Yoongi obviously looked...how would you describe it? Scared? Fidgety? Both? Perhaps.
"I'll take you home, Yoongi-ah. What's your street name?"
"Agust D."
I raised an eyebrow.
"You live on a street called 'Agust D'?"
"Ah, no, it's genius street."
"Then what's the deal about Agust D?"
"I-...We don't have time for this, Noona!"
"Alright, alright. C'mon, let's get you home." He followed me out of the cafe doors. The sun had dipped slightly beneath the horizon painting the sky with a brilliant array of warm colors. We walked together, left, right, left, our feet stepping in the same pattern. The way to his house was pretty silent, but I liked it like that. It really makes you enjoy the things around you a little more, tuning out all the chaos in the world.
"We're here." He stopped in front of a neighborhood.
"Then, I guess it's goodbye now, huh?" To tell the truth, I didn't want to go.
"Yeah..."
I turned to walk away, but a little hand tugged at my shirt.
"Noona."
"Yes?"
"C-Can we hang out again?"
I turned to face him, "Of course."
He gave a gummy smile, showing off his adorable teeth. I smiled warmly back at him, and we both departed.
