Lily Bright
It wasn't until I threatened them by an inch of their life did they tell me how Jane was killed. She was murdered, violently, and the police were turning her case into a cold case. The two wolves were escorted out of my office, almost shaking in their fur. My beta shifted, her long silver hair neatly tied into a ponytail, though it was sloppily made. Rachel was beautiful, I won't lie. High cheekbones and striking blue eyes. Though, her mate didn't ever seem to appreciate her as much as I did.
"Sir?" She sat down crossing her legs. "You can't blame them, their the only link we have to the humans and their information"
"What?" I looked at the paperwork on my desk.
"What do we do?" She kept her eyes on me as I tried not to look at her, but at the boring papers on my desk. I was infuriated, how could someone be so calm.
"Nothing. She was human we do nothing" Jane ran from me after I told her she was my mate. When she couldn't accept that she was the only one for me, she was gone by the next morning. It was her choice to run, and now she's dead.
"About that-" she trailed on, making me look up at her. "Hey lawyer called and said you should come to his office"
"Why?" Stretching and sighing I got up.
"Says she left you something...important" Her voice wavered a bit.
"Fine" Since I didn't care to make the poor man uncomfortable, I grabbed a jacket to cover the tattoos that lined my arms. I seemed to make the humans uncomfortable when it came to a bunch of tattoed men walking around town.
The man lived an hour from the pack house. My jeep passed through the town as I looked for his office. "Kar's" sign came into view as I parked in the lot across from it. No traffic so crossing the street was like crossing emptiness. His office was small and walking in I wasn't sure why she would come here, not like she didn't have the money for some big shot. The walls were greasy and a small staticky television sat in the corner giving off a little feedback from a movie that must have been long over.
"Can I help you" a slanted eyed girl sat at the desk looking at me.
"Here to see-" I was cut off by the door opening to see Mr. Kar.
"Ah you must be Carter" he held out his hand.
My hand took up most of his as I shakes it firmly, seeing him wince in pain.
"That's me" I put both hand now back into my pockets and waited.
"Right this way" We walked down a few halls than to his office.
A little girl was sitting on the couch in a black dress and striped leggings. Her hair was as pitch black as her dress and her eyes an amber shade like my own. I haven't ever seen eyes like mine before.
"Please sit were ever you want" He picked up a bear that looked like it had been thrown across the room.
"Where is my mother!" The girl yelled making the lawyer wince again.
"We'll just settle down sweetheart" he looked at me as I sat in a small chair.
"Why am I here?" I wanted to get this done and over with.
"Well, your "beta" as she called herself over the phone should also be here soon" just as he said the Rachel came in with a huge grin.
"Can we start now?" My patience with him and Rachel was thinning to spider silk.
"This is Lilian Bright" he began.
"Lily! Just Lily!" She shot another animal at him.
"Lily... She was Jane's daughter" I stared at him.
She had Jane's tempter that was for sure. Looking at her now she even looked like Jane.
Kar started to read Janes will to the three of us.
"To Carter, the love you wished from me I could not give for my time has been shortened. I was to have one child, a girl and if so my family would resign their fortune that was mine to my child. They won't have Lillian, I won't let them." Kar cleared his throat. "I have cancer Carter and I didn't want to burden you with myself"
A few sentences were a blur to me as I thought. Did she really think that she would be a burden on me? She would have been Luna and I could have cared for her. She would have gotten the best treatment.
"I leave Lillian Bright in the care of Alpha Carter" her lawyer stated to me and my beta.
"I can't take care of a four-year-old human!"
My temper grew then softened as I looked at Lily who was now crying into a piece of cloth. She knew what this meant? How could a girl her age comprehend what this meant?
