Chapter 1
"John!" Alex yelled out as he fell through the window to his best friends room. Said boy looked up, startled and almost falling off of his bed.
"Alex? How did.. What are you doing?"
"Look!" He pulled back his hair to show a small flower behind his ear.
Alex had woken up that morning and brushed his hair back to feel petals. Racing to the bathroom mirror, he discovered a flower. Immediately after making the discovery, he had climbed out of his bedroom window, went next door, climbed the tree next to the house, and fell inside the window to tell John.
"Wow, Alex, that's great! Any idea who it is?" John asked.
"Nope. But I'm thinking it's someone in our friend group, seeing that I've had the most time to get to know everyone really well."
Alex continued to ramble on about who it might be. He had always wondered when his flower was going to show up. Peggy had hers grow, later finding out that Maria Reynolds, who she was crushing on, had a flower for her, too. The same thing happened with Lafayette and Hercules. So everyday Alex checked for a flower.
John stopped trying a while ago. He had a flower bloom at one point, eventually getting together with the boy it had grown for. Not even a few months later, it shriveled and died. John was heartbroken, and decided that he never wanted to go through with that again. His friends knew this, and respected his wishes to not set him up with anyone. Peggy always got super close, though.
Even though John didn't care for any of this stuff, he was still supportive of his friends. If that meant being woken up at dawn by his best friend falling through his bedroom window, so be it.
"Alright, alright. But anyways," he yawned, "why are you telling me all this now?"
"Because," Alex grinned, "you are going to help me figure out who it is."
John groaned and face planted onto his pillow.
"Why me?" He complained, voice muffled by the pillow.
"Because you're my best friend and I would do the same for you if this happened so I expect the same from you."
"You hold me to too high a standard."
Right then a knock was heard at the door, and John's mom slowly opened the door.
"John, you need to get up and get ready fo-" She fully opened the door to see Alex sitting on the floor while John was laying in his bed, face shoved onto his pillow.
"Alex, I hope you aren't torturing my son." She joked.
Alex placed a hand over his chest and made an offended noise. "I would never, Mrs. Laurens."
She grinned at him. "Mhmm. Anyways, John, you need to actually get up and get ready. We're leaving for school in an hour."
"Yeah, yeah. Fine I'm getting up." He said, slowly sitting up and getting off of his bed as his mom turned and headed back downstairs. Alex stood up.
"Well, I should probably head back over to my house and get ready too. I'll so you at school."
John gave him a quick wave and then Alex was out the window. As quietly as he could, he slipped in through the front door of his house, only to find the Washington's sitting in the kitchen waiting for him.
"Alex, did you go wake John up early again?" Martha asked. Alex bounced on the balls of his feet, his hands behind his back.
"Maaaaaaaybe......"
"Alex, you need to let the poor boy have his sleep." George scolded.
"But I had something important to tell him!" Alex argued.
Martha raised an eyebrow. "You do realize that's your excuse everytime to sneak out, right?"
"Well, yeah, but this time was super important!" He pulled his hair back again to show the small flower behind his ear and Martha gasped.
"You're in love? Who is it? Do you know? Why didn't you tell us? Do we know them? Is it a boy or girl? Is that was you were telling John? When did you notice it?" Martha started rambling.
"Martha calm down." George told her. "I'm sure Alex would've told us the day he found out."
Alex nodded. "Yeah, I found out this morning before I headed over to John's. I figured since he's my best friend he should be one of the first ones to know."
George nodded, still trying to calm down his over excited wife. "Well, you should probably go get ready for school."
"Alright. I'll see you guys after school." He said before going to his room.
As soon as he was out of sight, Martha got serious.
"I'm calling it right now. It's gonna be John. You owe me 20 bucks if I'm right George."
