Dun's POV
"Don't give up, don't give up, keep going," I kept telling myself as I waded through the knee deep water.
I could already see the temple from afar. I estimated the distance from the bottom of the steps to where I had parked my car was half a mile away.
By the time I reached the steps leading up to the temple, I was ready to collapse. I could not even see the bottom step because it had already been covered by the flood.
"Please, dear heavens, help me to reach the top," I prayed earnestly.
I was practically crawling up the steps. I had lost all strength. My wet clothes weighed me down.
I wasn't even aware that I had lost consciousness outside the doors of the temple until I heard a voice yelling, "There's somebody out here! Help me bring him inside!"
I felt myself being half dragged half carried through the doors of the temple.
I couldn't blame them. I was a heavy person. My wet clothes added to my weight.
I was shaking like a leaf on the bough of a tree on a windy day and my teeth were chattering so loudly that I could hear the staccato sound of it like someone's sharp heels walking briskly down a church aisle.
Some kind soul wrapped a thick blanket around me and guided me down a hallway.
"I will tell the monk in charge that I brought you to the room closest to the set of shower stalls so that you can quickly get under the warm water of the shower," the good Samaritan said to me.
He quickly entered the room and took out some dry clothes for me to change into after my shower. He handed me a large towel as well.
"Here, go take a shower and when you're finished you can come back to this room and take a much needed rest on one of the beds," he said.
"Thank you, you're very kind," I said as I accepted everything that he gave me.
"Tell me your name so that I can tell the monk in charge to enter you into the system," he said.
"My name is Dun," I replied.
"Okay, this is room 12," he said. "Don't forget the number so that you don't get lost when you come back from your shower."
"Room 12," I repeated. "Thank you again."
The warm shower somehow restored my energy but once I entered room 12 and saw the beds, I felt the exhaustion come over me once more.
I lay down on the bed and in no time I was sound asleep.
I was awakened by the sound of a drawer opening and closing.
I opened my eyes and sat up in bed.
There was someone else in the room with me.
"I'm sorry if I woke you up," the person in the room said in an apologetic voice. "I tried to be as quiet as possible after I came back from the shower but I wanted to comb my wet hair in place so I looked into the drawers in this dresser to see if I could find a hair brush or a comb,"
"Did you find one?" I asked, suddenly remembering that after my shower I had not even thought about fixing my hair but went straight to sleep on one of the three beds that were in this room.
"Yes, there are several unopened packages of combs," he replied. "No hairbrushes though. I would have preferred to use a hairbrush. I have a very sensitive scalp."
I wondered what his name was but was too polite to ask.
As if he read my mind, he approached me saying, "By the way, my name is Up Poompat. The monk in charge assigned me to this room."
I accepted his offer of a handshake, saying, "And I am Dun. I'm happy to have you as a roommate."
"Thank you," Up replied. "I am grateful to be here. I feel sorry for anyone who was not able to seek shelter from the storm."
