Chapter 3
"Seuraava pysäkki ranska!" Next stop is France! The conductor shouted.
Willa's eyes opened weakly, and sat up.
Everyone was gone.
Willa sighed, and stood from her seat, immediately realizing her legs felt wobbly and like jelly, so she walked slowly and painfully down the aisle.
"Thank you." She said to the conductor and stepped off the train.
As she stepped off the train, Willa was met with hundreds of people gathering, and speaking about their travels. She shoved her way through the cluster of people, and off the platform.
Willa scoffed and rolled her eyes at the beautiful field and city view before her.
Nothing was beautiful, to her. Her pessimistic nature made her unable to see the beauty which Earth held. It was only darkness, and pain.
She continued down the hill and made her way into the city. From afar it was beautiful, but now within the city of France, Nazi banners hung across buildings, as soldiers roamed balconies. Groups of poor French boys roamed the alleys, waiting to beat up and rob the pockets of the wealthy.
Willa looked to her left and stopped.
Five people women and men, who were previously hanged were in a row across a wood bar. The Nazis showed them off like a trophy, to ultimately making the public fear them into obedience.
Willa's jaw tightened.
She hated to see her people being treated this way, it made her sick. Though she wasn't treated well either, Willa knew she drew the lucky end of the stick.
But she felt guilty for it.
As Willa continued through the city, the buildings and businesses once owned by Jewish people had holes, large and small, and parts of the buildings appeared burnt. Several homes on the streets looked the same.
Everything once happy and bright, was gone.
Cheminée des Révoires, Monaco, South-western Border
Schaffel walked weakly, trying to catch his breath as the elevation increased dramatically. The climate reminded him of Actaeon.
But it didn't bring him comfort.
It only reminded him that his community was gone, his family, and his best friend. It only brought back the traumatizing memories.
Schaffel continued, eventually to a sign that read, Nice, France. A large purple bird sat on the sign peacefully, nothing like Schaffel had ever seen before. Schaffel rubbed his eyes.
It was gone.
He furrowed his brows in thought, and walked on.
Schaffel began to remember when he used to sit outside by himself, and he would study Earth's geography, especially the forms, and beautiful blue water that surrounded the green land. Not only that, but he loved studying the animals through his books.
But they were the strangest creatures he had ever seen.
That bird just could be another I guess. Schaffel thought. But he had never seen anything like it in his books. He shrugged, and continued.
Suddenly the air around Schaffel thickened, and the land began to smooth, and flatten.
Eventually, Schaffel entered a city, and looked around confused. He expected it to be more breathtaking.
It was, definitely, but not the breathtaking he expected.
As he continued through the city, the darkness swallowed him up. He felt like all hope was lost, and pain was everything.
The further he went, Schaffel recognized the same symbol that he found after the attack pasted everywhere.
What is this symbol?
He stopped as one of the soldiers approached him, and spoke a language unknown to Schaffel.
He froze, paralyzed with fear.
The soldier began to yell in commandment, then he slowly raised his gun.
Schaffel's breath grew heavy, as he glanced around endlessly. Panic took over him.
He didn't want to die this way, not how painfully his community did.
Suddenly he heard the faint voice of a girl. "Down the alley." she said.
Schaffel looked at the soldier speechless, as he dropped the gun, and collapsed to the ground.
The other soldiers gaped at Schaffel, and then commanded the others as they began to run after him.
Schaffel didn't look back as he sprinted through the street, his adrenaline pumping and his heart racing.
But he was too caught up in fear to hear the loud shrieks, and echoing bird calls.
He then glanced to his left, to a thin walkway between buildings. He began to run down it as someone gripped his arm, and pulled him into a black room.
He didn't look at who grabbed him until the soldiers approached, and Schaffel looked at who they were.
It was a girl.
They stood in silence, as the soldiers muttered something and left.
"Were you-" Schaffel whispered.
"The one that spoke to you?" She finished. "Yes."
"W-who are you?" Schaffel said, frightened.
"Willa." She answered. "Who are you?"
"Schaffel." He said quietly, avoiding eye contact.
Willa raised her eyebrow at the strange name, and looked at her hands. "Where are you from?" She asked, brushing her hands on her dark pants.
"Planet Actaeon," He said.
She looked at him in confusion, and laughed slightly. "I'm not sure where that is."
"This is Earth, and my planet is-was, the solar system beside this system." He explained.
"Was?"
"My planet was destroyed." He mumbled, tears threatening to fill his eyes.
Willa scoffed, not even surprised in the slightest. "There seems to be a lot of destruction going on recently. My home-town was destroyed too." she replied.
"How?"
"Warsaw; it was bombed and destroyed by the Nazis." She said, her face shifting to dark.
"Nazis?"
Her expression changed from anger to utter shock. "Seriously? They've been trying to take over for years now, and you don't know them?"
But seeing the truth and innocence in his face, she explained it to him. "They are the people who just tried to kill you."
"Why did you save me?" Schaffel innocently asked.
She sighed. "They would've killed you."
Willa alertly stepped back to the sound of footsteps, and voices. "The girl is missing," they went on. "We need to find her, or the General will kill us."
Finally, their steps faded, and their voices no longer heard. "I think they're gone." Schaffel whispered.
Suddenly, the ground began to shake as the tools and walls vibrated around them, knocking them off their feet. Schaffel hugged his knees to his chest holding them tightly.
Then, the piercing sound of a plane flew by.
Crap.
"Get out!" Willa cried as she struggled to get away.
Then, horrid sound of a bomb hit the ground, sending a wave of wind that demolished the building, and sent them flying. Schaffel and Willa slammed to the ground.
Schaffel opened his eyes to the street, completely flattened, "are you okay?" He asked, reaching his hand out to help her.
Willa slapped his hand away. "I'm fine." She said, and stood to her feet, ignoring the throbbing pain in her shoulder.
Suddenly soldiers with guns began running at them.
Willa rolled her eyes, as she effortlessly removed the guns out of their hands from afar, and made piles of wood float off the ground. Schaffel watched in awe as Willa finally threw the wood in the soldiers' direction.
As more soldiers began to approach, they came with even more deadly weapons.
"Okay, we need to go," Willa yelled as she grabbed Schaffel's hand, and helped him up.
As they began to run, Willa noticed her hands were gone, and the soldiers no longer followed them.
Schaffel was invisible too.
Finally they stopped in another alley building, and they faded back to their physical selves.
Does he know? Willa thought.
She shook her head and stood up. She didn't want any involvement with this kid, as he was clearly crazy. He had no idea who the Nazis were, and claimed he was from another planet! Honestly he was probably experimented on too, Willa thought.
Why else would he have powers?
But still, she wanted nothing to do with him.
"Well," Willa said, turning to leave, "safe travels."
Before Willa could step out, she stopped in her tracks.
This kid knows nothing of this world. Willa thought. He'll die out here.
"Are you going to leave?" Schaffel asked playing with his fingers nervously. "What if they find me and take me?"
Willa sighed and turned only to be met with Schaffel's holding his head in pain.
"Schaffel?" She asked, kneeling down beside him. "Schaffel!"
His head throbbed, and his eyes were shut. He opened his eyes only for a moment, as they turned purple.
Images began to flash in his mind uncontrollably. He saw a rock planet, and a black haired man with a purple line down the centre of his face.
Then, an explosion.
Finally, Schaffel snapped out of it, and it all stopped. His ears rang, and everything was silent.
"What happened?" He mumbled.
A long silence followed, as Willa looked at him with concern, trying to think of something to say. "You went out for a second."
Schaffel looked down into his lap. "Felt like I just had a massive headache." He smiled sadly.
He looked at her innocently again. "Are you really going to leave me here though?"
Willa sighed with irritation, and looked down.
She honestly didn't know what to do, yet her gut was telling her to stay.
But what if it is a trap?
Willa groaned, massaging her temples for comfort. She hated the misery of her mind at times.
"Fine, we need to find safety then," she said. "I know someone, hopefully he's still here. Alive."
Long chapter! Hopefully it wasn't boring lol
