Birthday Wishes and Powers

I wake up to the sun shining brightly in my eyes. I groan and throw my arm over my eyes to block out the sun. My eyes flash open as I remember today is my sixteenth birthday. I quickly get dressed but freeze when I realised that I slept all afternoon and all night. That means I didn't eat dinner or do any of my homework. I grab my bag and jog down the stairs and smile at my parents who are sitting at the table.

"Well, if isn't Miss Sleeping Beauty." Dad teases me.

"Aidan! Leave her alone. Happy birthday sweetheart!" Mom says, smiling brightly at me. I hug my mum.

"Thanks Mom. I must have been really tired with school and all that, Dad." I say, giving my dad a kiss on the check as I sit in between them at the table as Mom stands up and hands me my birthday breakfast, two waffles, five strips of bacon, and two hard boiled eggs.

"Honey, too much stress-" Dad started to say

"-can be detrimental to anyone especially someone whose brain is still developing such as yours." I finish for him as I have heard the speech before whenever Dad thinks I am too stressed out. Dad is the town doctor and is always telling me how too much stress can be really bad. Mom laughs at Dad's expression as I managed to finish his sentence. We eat in silence for a couple minutes but then I hear something.

'Cameron and Adrianna will make such a good couple.' It was my mom's voice.

"Moooom! Cam and I are just friends." I whine slightly.

"Okay dear but I never said anything about that." Mom says looking baffled.

"But I could have sworn – I must still be tired. Anyways, I have to get to school. See you guys later." I quickly head out the door. I shake my head as I start to walk to school. I walk all the way to school with no incident. When I get there, I head straight for class because I missed homeroom. My first class for the day is Latin. Mr. Conroy looks up when I enter tens minutes late.

"So nice of you to join us, Ms. Waterwork. Please take a seat." Mr. Conroy points to a desk near the front of the class and I pull out my textbook. Ten minutes into the class, we are quietly answering questions from the textbook when I hear it again.

'Urgh. This is really hard! Why do we need to conjugate verbs?' It is the voice of one of my classmates Rachel Williams who sits behind me in Latin. I lean backwards and help her with the conjugation, and she gives me a confused but grateful smile. When I am walking out of class, Rachel catches up to me.

"Hey, thanks for the help but how did you know I needed help?" She asks, mystified that I knew she needed help.

"Oh um, conjugation is really hard, and everyone struggles with it?" I finish my sentence like it is a question. Rachel nods and waves at me as she heads down a different hallway for class than I am going. On the way to my next class, Chemistry with Mrs. Barium, I hear what sounds like someone who is distressed.

'I can't do this. I just can't anymore.' I round the corner and see the football team's quarterback, Brady Johnson, sitting leaning against a wall, sniffling.

"Brady, you okay?" I ask in a kind tone of voice.

"I'm fine. Mind your own business, Waterwork." He says gruffly before getting up and storming off. I roll my eyes at how macho man Brady Johnson thinks he has to be all the time. I quickly look at my watch and realise that I am going to be late for Chemistry. I hurry down the hallway and make it just in time. I take my seat as Mrs. Barium starts the lesson on the review of the periodic table for our test on Friday.

"Can anyone tell me what the 20th element on the periodic table is?" Mrs. Barium asks, looking around the class for volunteers to answer the question, when I hear it behind me.

'Shit! I forgot my periodic table at home!' Evan Wood who sits behind me and is usually prepared for class, so I decided to help him out as Mrs. Barium usually calls on him. I raise my hand.

"Yes Ms. Waterwork?"

"I don't have the answer, but I seem to have forgotten my periodic table at home." I inform Mrs. Barium.

"That's alright, Adrianna, we all have our bad days. There is a copy of the periodic table in the back of your textbook. Anyone else have the answer?" Behind me, I hear Evan flipping to the back of the textbook.

"Yes Evan?" I didn't hear his answer because I now know something fishy is going on. I absentmindedly take notes for the rest of class, while my mind races trying to figure out how this is possible. The bell rings, signalling that it is now lunch. I put my stuff in my bag and head to the cafeteria. Maybe if I talk it out with Cam, Alex, and Scar, everything will start to make sense. My friends are all seated at our usual table. They all smile at me as I collapse into a seat next to Cam.

"Happy birthday!" The three of them say at the same time, reminding me that today is in fact my birthday. I smile grateful at them.

"Thanks, guys." Alex slides a familiar box across the table to me. I open it and inside it is the same birthday cupcake that I have been getting from Edith Andrews every year on my birthday.

"Tell your grandma, I say thank-you." I smile brightly as I stand up and hug my best friends from behind.

"You know she enjoys making everyone cupcakes. She will just tell us to tell you that it was a delight to make a cupcake for you." Alex softly shakes his head.

"I know but it is very polite to say thank-you when receiving a gift." I explain to Alex.

"Anyways, I need to tell you guys something-" I get cut off by Brittany.

"Your new haircut looks soooo ugly, Adrianna." She smirks at us before stalking off.

"New haircut? I haven't had time to cut my hair?" I look at my friends with confusion and Scar digs in her bag for something. She pulls out a mirror and I see that my reflection has a hair length that is half the length it was this morning. I reach up and feel my hair, so confused.

"Okay somehow not the weirdest thing to happen today. All morning, I have been able to answer unasked questions. Like this morning in Latin, Rachel needed help with conjugation, and I was able to help her without actually asking out loud."

"Maybe you can read minds." Cam jokes.

"You might be right, Cam." Alex says.

"I was joking, Alex." Cam speaks slowly as if speaking to a child. Scar, Cam, and I all stare at Alex like he suddenly grew three heads.

"Alex, it could just be that I know everyone so well. You know, having grown up here, my entire life." I explain to him in a duh kind of tone.

"Okay, prove it. What am I thinking about?" Alex challenges.

'Hey Adri. Did you know that Cam has a huge crush on you? Also, I am going to think something else and that you should say out loud cause Cam will kill me if he finds out that I told you. Anyways, I sometimes think that if Brittany wasn't such a brat, that I would ask her out.'

"You think about asking out Brattany?!?!?!?!?!" I exclaim softly as Scar and Cam both stare between the two of us with their mouths dropped open.

"You can read minds." Alex says. Scar messages her temples.

"Two questions. How is this even remotely possible and how come Adri couldn't do it before if she does have this power?" Cam sounds like he is trying to wrap his head around this extremely crazy notion.

"I don't have answers to either of those questions, unfortunately." Alex frowns.

"Wait, what about yesterday, Adri?" Scar questions me.

"Wait you don't think that –" I cut myself off with a shake of my head. Cam and Alex look at the two of us girls.

"Either one of you wants to explain what you two are talking about?" Cam asks.

"Yesterday when we went to the bathroom during lunch, Brattany and Madison were in there arguing and before either one of us could step in to stop the argument, some kind of caused us to all fly backwards and I don't know about Adri, but I definitely felt something go through me. Like some kind of energy or something."

"I definitely felt that too, but I didn't think anything of it. That's why I was late to Math yesterday, Alex." I say looking over at Alex to see the most thoughtful look on his face that I have ever seen.

"Scar, you may also have something power-like if that is the case." Alex muses.

"Again, I ask how this is even remotely possible?" Cam is starting to sound really freaked out.

"Maybe we shouldn't be discussing this in the middle of the lunchroom. We should probably take this discussion to the place after school." I say and everyone nods and is quiet for the rest of lunch. Sitting in Bio, I wish that class would end so I could discuss this in more detail with my friends, because we really need to figure this out. After Bio, Physics passes pretty quickly as Alex and I exchange glances and looks at the clock. Finally, the bell rings and Alex and I rush out of class to meet Cam and Scar at Cam's truck so we can get to the place fast. Cam is already waiting in the truck, and I hop into the first seat while Alex hops into the seat behind me and Scar comes running over and hops into the seat behind Cam. Cam starts the truck and drives out of there fast. Soon the place is in sight. It is an abandoned tower that no one in our town goes to because they think it is haunted by the ghost of a mediaeval princess. This was, of course, a legend, started by Cam and I in second grade so no one else would go there. So, we would have a place that was just ours, that we shared with Alex and Scar when we became best friends.

Sorry it took me so long to update! Enjoy Chapter 2!
