A Hands on Experience

"So, what is your church called?" I ask Easton. I'm sitting in his family's minivan going to their church.

"Crossroads Church," Easton replies. "It's so much fun. I'm pretty positive that you and Mack will will love it." I feel the car lurch to a stop.

"We're here, Cade," Easton's Mom informs me. I reach around and find Mack's handle. I'm helped out of the minivan and we all start walking to the church. I can tell the parking lot is on a small hill because there is a slight slope. We walk straight for a little bit then suddenly turn right. I hear people saying hello and welcoming us. I can tell we are in the building by the background music playing and by the air-conditioning.

"Cade, there is a chair right behind you," Easton tells me. I start to sit and feel with my hand for the chair. I sit after I feel the rough material. We talk about random things for a few minutes. Suddenly, I hear instruments start playing.

"Welcome to Crossroads Church! Please stand for worship," a girl says. A song starts playing and a guy starts singing. I figure what the chorus is, because it's repeated.

"Cause even when the world caves, even when the fight calls, even when war's waged, I'll take heart. I know you are greater; forever you are Savior. I will sing you praise, with all that I have, with all that I am Lord," the guy sings. I feel a weird feeling in my stomach, and I don't know what it is. The people sing a few more songs, and then a new guy speaks into a microphone. He prays and tells us all to sit down.

"Now, if you're taking notes, this sermon is called What We See," the pastor says. As he's preaching, I feel like he's talking to me directly. I also feel an restlessness inside of myself, and I have no clue why. All of a sudden, I have the sudden urge to cry. I don't know why. I'm able to hold it back.

"If you're struggling to walk by faith, and not by sight, I urge to you, Jesus loves you. He has your six, your back. If you stumble or fall, He will catch you. If this is you, and you haven't let Him into your life yet, I invite you to pray this with me." As he prays, I mutter the words he is saying under my breath. When he finishes praying, and I'm done repeating, I just start crying. I can't hold it back anymore.

"Now, you may be looking at the time on your phones an realizing that my sermon was a little short today. I realize that, but there is a good reason. We have a special guest here this morning, and I would like to invite him up. Please welcome to the stage, Cade, his sight dog Mack, and his best friend who brought him here, Easton." I'm in so much shock that I just sit there.

"Come on, Cade. We gotta go up there," Easton urges. He pulls me up and I grab Mack's handle. Easton leads us up to the stage. "There are some steps here." We make it onto the stage and I'm stopped and turned to what I assume is the crowd.

"Cade is, he's special, one might say. I say he's unique and wonderfully created to fulfill God's purpose for his life. But he's blind," pastor says. I feel the air in front of my face move. "I just waved my hand in his face. Did you know I did that?" I feel the microphone be put into my hand and I put it up to my mouth. It hits my lips and I pull it down a little because it made a loud noise.

"Oops. No, I did not see your hand, but I did feel the air in front of my face move," I speak into the microphone an I hear the crowd laugh. A hand grabs the microphone from my hand.

"So, you're probably wondering why he's up here. Well, I thought that we'd step out into faith. I would like to pray over this young man. The Bible says that where two or more are gathered in His name, that He will be there. There are definitely more than two of us here. So, let us pray. If you could reach a hand out towards Cade, that would be greatly appreciated." I feel two hands touch my arm. We are told to close our eyes, so I close my eyelids, I think.

"Father, we love you, and we know that You are always there for us. Please be there for this fine young man. He greatly needs Your help, and I pray for a miracle. If it is Your will, open Cade's eyes. I trust that You are good, that You know what's best for us, and I know that You love each and everyone of us. God we love you, and thank you for being there for Cade, and us. In Your name, we pray, Amen," the pastor finishes praying and I open my eyelids.

I see the crowd gathered in an auditorium and I immediately fall to my knees and start crying.

"I can see! I can see!" I yell. I keep crying, and I hear the whole church yelling and cheering. I hear music start playing as I'm on my knees, crying.

"See the sun now bursting through the clouds. Black and white turns to color all around. All is new, in the Savior I am found. This is living now." Those lyrics make me cry even harder. I lift my head and see bright light shining down from the top of the auditorium. I'm ushered off the stage back to my seat. I see Mack for the first time. He has short brown fur with some white patches. I see Easton for the first time. He has blond hair that is put up and to the side, and he has green-ish, brown-ish eyes.

The band finishes singing and worshiping and the congregation is dismissed. We walk out of the church building and I see the sun bursting through the clouds. This is living now.
