Chapter DOS
A/N: Heyllo! I was completely shocked that this story has gotten more than forty reads after only one chapter! My most popular story didn't even have thirty until the third chapter! So, needless to say I really wanted to do well with next one. I can't believe I actually was able to easily write more than 3,700 words for just this chapter. Anyway, just a quick note that for the purposes of this story, Frisk will be a girl and Napstablook will be male. Also, the reader will remain gender neutral as long as I can keep it so.
Alright, without further ado,(*puts on Mettaton shirt*) lets do this.
___________This chapter brought to you by TEMMIE FLAKES___________
"I don't believe we've met before, beautiful."
That unnaturally pink eye roved over you, taking in what you wore, your half-done hair, and you subconsciously thought that you were sweating like a pig and your face was flushed due to the heat. His gaze made you uncomfortable, like you were being scrutinized.
And the way he addressed you sent a chill down your spine, making you shudder imperceptibly. Beautiful. He had called you beautiful. You hadn't ever been addressed like that, and you could not imagine why he had chosen that particular word. At this moment you believed that ragged or maybe disheveled or even haggard would be closer to your description. Definitely not beautiful. Even the way he said it-brrr.
However, further taking in how he had spoken and the fact that the primary colors of his design appeared to be black and pink, you figured that this guy would probably address a Dumpster as "sweetheart." You kept that in mind as he continued, saying, "I'm Mettaton, darling, the Underground's premier star. But I assume you already knew that." He reached out a hand.
'Okay, so he's slightly full of himself. Still, with that much fame, who wouldn't be?' you thought to yourself. You took the proffered hand and replied, "I'm (Y/N), Frisk's older sibling. I have heard a little bit about you."
He shook your hand lightly. You absentmindedly pondered if the glove was covering his hand, or if the glove was his hand. You chided yourself silently for thinking something that strange. Why were you even thinking about what his hand was made of?
Suddenly, something registered in his face. "You said that you had heard about me before? Do the humans actually know who I am already?!" He appeared ecstatic with a smile inching across his metal face and his one visible eye wide with joy. He was so obviously elated that you genuinely felt bad with having to tell him that, no, in fact, you and Frisk were the only humans who knew of him.
Mettaton's face fell for a moment, but it soon passed and he was the same eccentric robotic star that you had heard about again. "Well," he began, "I'll have to fix that, won't I? Soon humanity will be eating out of the palm of my hand!" His eye glinted with something that appeared akin to mischievousness. He chuckled strangely before turning from you and saying, "Anyway, Frisk, why didn't you tell me you had an older sibling?"
The small child shrugged dismissively, "It didn't seem like it would matter much. You tried several times to kill me. I couldn't really talk."
Your eyes widened in shock. This...thing had tried to murder Frisk? A small innocent child of ten years? You couldn't believe it.
"He what?!" You snapped.
"It was all in good fun," Mettaton tried to assure you.
"All in good fun! You tried to murder my little sister 'All in good fun'? On more than one occasion it sounds like. Frisk, why are you even forgiving this, freak." You spat, infuriated.
"O-oh b-boy. I'm s-so sorry, (Y-Y-Y/N). I-it w-was my f-fault," Alphys stuttered, ashamed.
"Alphys, don't be so upset. Mettaton and I are friends now," Frisk said.
"Darling, it was acting the entire time. Dr. Alphys and I were only putting on a good show. Frisk didn't know at first, but I never really had any intention of killing her. Mostly," Mettaton told you tentatively.
You took a shaky breath, your rage slowly subsiding. He had been acting, he had been acting. He never was going to really hurt Frisk. She was safe the whole time. Mostly. Wait, mostly?!
"What did you mean 'mostly'?" you demanded.
"I, um, can't really, uh-" Mettaton was actually at a loss for words.
"C'mon, (Y/N). We're friends now. He needed my soul to get his dream of being on the surface. He can get there now, so you can relax," Frisk backed him up. As if to give the statement more credibility, Frisk walked up to Mettaton's side and smiled up at him, "Right?"
"Of course, darling. We have gotten over our inhibitions," Mettaton looked down at Frisk with a friendly gaze.
You sighed in defeat. You couldn't deny your little sister anything, especially a friend. Goodness knows Frisk needed them. So, you easily released your anger. You believed this strange pink robot. You trusted that he wouldn't do anything, now that he was able to achieve his aforementioned dream. Besides, most of the monsters that were at your house as you spoke had probably tried to kill Frisk.
"So, peace?" Frisk asked hopefully.
You looked at Frisk's innocent, pleading eyes. This was so like Frisk- to offer mercy to everyone and to want nothing but mercy. So, you nodded in agreement. Knowing Frisk, she would find a way to force you to befriend Mettaton. Frisk made you and Mettaton shake hands and smiled contentedly.
"O-oh, that's g-good. I'm s-so relieved," Alphys sighed.
"So, while we're at it," Frisk began, "Mettaton, do you wanna come to a party at (Y/N)'s house? All my friends are there..."
Mettaton faux gasped, "Are you insinuating that I, of all people, would miss the opportunity to attend a party! Why of course, darling! I wouldn't dream of missing it. I especially would like to be better acquainted with you and your darling sibling."
"Yay! C'mon, we still need to find Napstablook!" Frisk grabbed Mettaton by the hand and tried to pull him out of the lab. Mettaton held her back however.
"Wait just a second, dear. Your sibling hasn't said I can come. I wouldn't want to be unwelcome," Mettaton told her, looking at you for confirmation.
"I wouldn't have come here if I didn't want you to go to the surface," You said.
"Fabulous! Come on, beauties. Let's go and get Blooky!' He said, now allowing Frisk to drag him out. Once they left the building, you could hear Frisk asking, "What does 'insinuating' mean?" As you stepped out of the lab you heard a robotic chuckle respond to the child.
You ended up slightly behind them with Alphys shuffling next to you. She appeared nervous for some reason, wringing her hands together and looking everywhere except you while you tried to make small talk.
"L-listen, (Y-Y/N), I'm r-really, truly sorry about what h-happened back there w-with Mettaton. H-he's actually r-really n-nice, but not m-many of us had a g-good opinion o-of Frisk at first. A-also, M-Mettaton was b-built as a, um, human elimination r-robot," She said, looking down at her hands.
"Wait, wha-" you began but were quickly cut off.
"Alphys, that was not what happened. It's been a long time since I've even had that program. That finale battle with Frisk was of my own free will. You simply cannot take any blame," Mettaton said, "By the way, Frisk, you are an absolutely divine dancer. I never had the chance to tell you."
"Thanks," Frisk giggled, "I did learn from the best!"
"Oh, really?"
"Mhmm! (Y/N) would always dance with me when we had free time, that's how I was taught," Frisk happily replied.
"Oh, then (Y/N) must show me this talent sometime."
You blushed, and were thankful that nobody was really facing you. You closed your eyes and mentally tried to will your cheeks to obey you. Please change the subject, please change the subject, please change the subject...
"Oh, we're here!"
Yes!
You were at a river in which was a boat, being manned, or maybe womanned,(or maybe dogged) by a suspicious figure in a purple cape. You were even further set on edge by its voice when it spoke.
"Tra la la, I am the riverman. Or maybe, I'm the riverwoman. Where to today?"
"Waterfall," Frisk told them. Everyone stepped in with ease, except you. The boat rocked as you stepped in, causing you to startle. You slowly sat, and the boat rose up on legs that you hadn't seen before. You tightly gripped the sides of the boat, your knuckles turning white from holding so hard. You were taking quick, shallow breaths in fear. When it finally came to a stop and you released the sides, your hands were so stiff that you had to stretch them out, clenching and unclenching a few times. You exited the craft last, and noticed the way that Alphys, Mettaton, and Frisk were watching you.
You gulped and asked, "What? Is something wrong?"
"You were a bit nervous, weren't you, darling," Mettaton asked with a hint of a smirk. You wanted desperately to glare, but you were still shaking like a leaf.
"Let's just get your friend," you said. Frisk linked her hand with your own and happily sauntered along with you in tow.
Before long you arrived at an area with three paths branching out. You noticed something glittering on the floor. Curiously, you knelt down to grab it. Instead, the world around you stopped, except for Frisk, looking wide eyed at you. A heart began to glow in your chest. Words appeared in front of you-
Knowing that meeting these monsters marks a new point in your life...It fills you with determination.

Waterfall-Quiet Area
Save | Return
"Frisk, what is happening?" you asked.
"No. Way. You can SAVE, too?! That's awesome!"
"Save?"
"Some people and monsters in this world have the power to SAVE and to RESET. Basically, if anything bad happens, you can return to this exact moment in time- and nobody will know. Well, except for me and Sans. Maybe Flowey, if he's still here."
"Wait, so I can do this wherever? And that skeleton can as well?"
"You can only do at SAVE points. And there aren't any on the surface. And Sans can't do it, he only knows when it happens."
The glowing heart floated out of your chest, and you were somehow able to navigate it to Save. The heart disappeared and the world around you resumed. Frisk held your hand again and after winking, pulled you forward.
You came upon an area with two houses, one blue and one salmon pink, bending away from each other. They were mirror images, aside from the color. They looked rather like ghosts, so you weren't completely surprised when Frisk knocked on the door and a cute little ghost, a bit taller than Frisk, opened the door. He was wearing a pair of headphones, and had to take them off to hear Frisk.
"Hi, Napstablook!"
"O-oh, hi. Why are you here? Hasn't the barrier broken? you should be up there, not wasting your time on me. Oh, you brought a friend. H-hi, I'm Napstablook," he said.
"Hi there! I'm (Y/N), Frisk is my little sister. How are you?"
"I-i'm good, i guess," he responded.
"So, Napstablook, do you wanna come to a party at (Y/N)'s house? A whole bunch of people are going to be there, and you can bring your music," Frisk said.
"I'd better not. I'm not much fun, and I don't really like parties."
At that moment, Alphys shuffled in, with Mettaton behind her. Napstablook's large white eyes widened. He quickly floated forward to the robot, saying, "M-mettaton? You're here? I thought you didn't care about me anymore..."
Mettaton knelt down and somehow hugged the ghost tightly. "Blooky," he started, "Of course I care about you! You're my favorite cousin, and my best friend! I'll never stop caring about you."
Well this was awkward to watch. You directed your gaze anywhere but them, as this moment seemed rather like something you shouldn't be witnessing.
"O-oh... sorry for underestimating you," Napstablook apologized.
"Oh no, Blooky! Darling, I'm not mad at you at all! You have no need to apologize. I should be the sorry one here. I haven't even spoken to you in years, except for the time you called into the show."
"You knew that was me?"
"How could I not? Now, are you going to come to the surface with us? It wouldn't be half as fabulous without you!"
"Okay, i guess i'll come with you, as long as nobody minds."
You looked at the ghost, who had been released by his robot cousin. Wait, robot and ghost- how were they even related? You mentally noted to ask Frisk later before saying, "I'd love for you to come, Napstablook."
"Okay then. Th-thanks he said quietly.
So, all five of you made your way to the surface. When you emerged, it was already late at night and crowds had dispersed, and the monsters were preparing to rest under the stars. Some monsters called out to Mettaton, but none really rushed up to him in gaggles of crazed fans, like what would happen to a human superstar.
You approached the car and unlocked it. Frisk ran forward and tugged at the doorknob of the shotgun seat. You gave her a pointed look, communicating that she was going to sit in the backseat. She pouted, "But, (Y/N), come on! I'm ten now. Pleeaaassseee?"
You looked at her adorable pout and were tempted to let her sit in the front seat, but you weren't taking any unnecessary risks in a car. "No, Frisk. You need to sit in your booster seat. And move it to the middle so Mettaton and Alphys will sandwich you in. You know how I feel about kids in the front seat-it's not safe."
"(Y/N)-"
"Frisk," you warned. She stomped her foot in frustration before climbing in the car. Mettaton looked tentatively at the vehicle after Alphys and Napstablook had gotten in.
"It's safe, right?" he asked.
"Well," you noticed the nervousness in his eyes, "It's safer than some things."
He artificially gulped before sitting inside and strapping in the seatbelt. You calmly drove back to your house, relishing silence on the short ride. That is, until you noticed an especially loud humming sound. Almost like a...fan?
When you reached the driveway and turned off the ignition, you heard the loud whirring fan quiet. You unlocked the doors and opened the back door, because the child safety lock was on. You saw Mettaton, squeezing the seatbelt as if it was the only thing keeping him anchored to the world. You heard the fan much louder now, and the pieces clicked together in your head.
You smirked slightly at Mettaton, who was still scared stiff. "You were a bit nervous, weren't you, darling," you said, echoing his earlier statement. He laughed quietly before asking with worried eyes, "It's over now, right, dear?"
You nodded and laughed, not unkindly, at how obviously scared he was. "Yeah, it's over. And you know, while I don't mind all the 'darlings' and whatnot, you do have permission to call me by my name," you said.
He nodded and got out of the car, walking perfectly. You would have marveled at this if he wasn't a robot, but he was completely programmed, so it made sense. You strolled to the door and at the moment you opened it, a distinct burning smell filled your nose.
Papyrus and Undyne were at the stove, cooking something. Upon closer examination, you saw that it was supposed to be some form of spaghetti. You eyed them suspiciously, and they obviously noticed, because Undyne said, "Hey, punks. Sans finished the pizza, so Pap and I decided to make some spaghetti."
"Papyrus, Undyne, didn't I say to skip the spaghetti today?" you said cautiously.
"Yes, human! But we figured-OH MY GOD IS THAT METTATON?!"
Papyrus ran up to the star and started gushing about what a big fan he was. Undyne shut off the stove and groaned before sitting on the couch, Alphys joining her. Sans was already asleep next to them.
Papyrus finally calmed down after posting nearly a dozen pictures of himself next to Mettaton. He sat on the couch next to Sans and shouted at him to get up. The four on the couch engaged in lazy conversation, and you sat on a nearby loveseat to join them. After a while, Alphys suggested that you all watch a movie.
Frisk jumped at the opportunity, pulling out her favorite movie. It was a kids' movie, but until she was asleep, you couldn't watch any of your favorites. So you injected it, and sat back down with her leaning up against your arm.
Only halfway through the movie, she had fallen asleep on your lap. You breathed a sigh of relief, because you weren't sure how much longer you could stay awake with that movie yourself.
"What do you guys want to watch now?" You asked the monsters quietly. You didn't get a definitive reply, just suggestions that compiled into a movie with spears (for Undyne), romance (for Mettaton), spaghetti (guess who), good music (for Napstablook), and no profanity (for Toriel). Opening the cabinet, you found The Lord of the Rings extended series, and figuring it met every requirement, omitting spaghetti, put the first movie in the DVD player. You resumed your place on the couch, with Frisk laying her head on your lap again. You absentmindedly stroked her hair as she slept for the entire four-hour long movie (watch it if you haven't already, it's so good). By this time, almost all of your guests had fallen asleep-Toriel in a reclined armchair; Sans, Papyrus, Undyne, and Alphys on the couch, and Napstablook was hovering over the floor.
You petted Frisk's hair one last time before standing and moving her off of your lap. You checked the time and noticed that it was already one in the morning. Figuring the house should be in a semi-decent state, you began to clean the mess Papyrus and Undyne had made in the kitchen. Nearly another hour later, the kitchen was spotless again. You walked back to the living room and pulled out a few blankets, using them to cover the sleeping monsters. Then you returned to the sleeping Frisk, and tried to pick her up, in order to carry her up to her room that she'd stay in whenever she slept over. Tried being the operative word. You found that your exhausted mind and overworked arms were refusing to cooperate with each other. You grunted while you attempted to lift her a second time.
"(Y/N), would you like some help, darling?"
You jumped in surprise at the voice from behind you. The voice had come from Mettaton, who had appeared to be asleep.
"Oh, I'm sorry for startling you," he said.
You placed a hand on your chest in an attempt to calm your erratic heartbeat. "No, no, it's okay," you assured him, "Did I wake you?"
"No, I was only in battery save mode. Closing my eyes reduces the battery usage."
"Okay then. Do you want me to get a guest room ready for you?"
"Oh, no. I don't need that, just the chair is fine. But as I said before, I'd be glad to help."
You nodded, too tired now to even think about being polite. He didn't mind however, strutting over and picking Frisk up, easily cradling her in his arms. You led him to her room, where he gently laid her on the purple bed. You pulled her spare nightgown out of a drawer and changed her out of her grimy blue and purple striped sweater and pants, not even caring that Mettaton was there. If he was someone who actually looked at a little kid that way, he seriously had a screw loose.
You finished up with Frisk and tucked her in, kissing her forehead.
"Frisk is such an adorable little girl," Mettaton said beside you. He had been so quiet that you had almost forgotten he was there.
"She really is," you smiled. The tiny little girl on the bed meant more than life to you.
"She'll be beautiful when she grows up. It seems like it runs in the family."
You blushed slightly, the meaning behind his words not being lost on you. You turned on her bedside lamp and walked out of the room to leave her be. Mettaton shut off the overhead light and closed the door behind himself.
Your room was downstairs, so you attempted to walk down the steps. But lack of sleep and stairs don't necessarily go well. It also didn't help that literally all the lights were off at the moment. As a result of this, your foot slipped on the top step and you fell down the first five. You would've fallen even further had a hand not grabbed your arm and yanked you up. Your heart was once again beating at a dangerous speed, considering you had just had the living daylights scared out of you. But you weren't the only one that had been shaken up, judging by the fact that you could hear Mettaton's fan whirring that small bit louder than it should be. Or maybe that was how he blushed, because you knew that you were as he held you against himself.
"Are you okay?" he asked, concern visible in his voice.
"Well," you took a calming breath to steady your voice before continuing, "I'm slightly terrified and my butt hurts like hell right now, but otherwise I'm fine."
He released another chuckle that somehow sounded like metal before saying, "I suggest you hold the railing this time, beautiful."
You nodded, even though you were pretty sure he couldn't see in the dark, and moved closer to the side with the railing. Actually, as an afterthought, he probably could see in the dark, considering how quickly he had snatched you before. You held the railing firmly, but still appreciated the gentle pressure that let you know he hadn't released your forearm. Luckily, you managed to complete the rest of the trek down the stairs without using the slide function that you didn't know you had.
When you reached the bottom, your suspicions of Mettaton's night vision were confirmed, as he led you to your room after he asked where it was. You fumbled with the handle until the door opened and you flicked on the light inside. You turned quickly and told him, "Thanks for saving my life back there."
"I'll be glad to save your life anytime you need," He replied with a jesting tone.
"Hopefully I won't need you to. Anyway, 'night." You closed the door behind you slowly. You could hear him whisper, "Goodnight, my dear."
Yep. Definitely a guy who calls Dumpsters "sweetheart." But that wasn't necessarily a bad thing.
