Chapter 5- Replacement
It was a new day and Dick Grayson found himself strolling down the stairs of Wayne Mansion, trailing the amazing scent of Alfred's famous blueberry pancakes. Dick reached the bottom of the steps to see both Tim and Barbra sitting at the table enjoying their meals.
"Good morning, Master Dick. Would you like some pancakes?" Alfred asked as cheerful as ever. Dick nodded and sat down at the large table while Alfred served him two blueberry pancakes with a glass of orange juice. Dick soon reached for the maple syrup and poured some maple syrup over his pancakes and cut them into pieces with his fork.
"What are you doing here?" Dick asked Barbara. She had been over the two days that Dick had been staying over and he had taken a notice.
"Planning Bruce's funeral. Someone has to do it." Dick sighed and nodded. Someone did have to do it and Dick still felt too depressed about his death to take charge.
"So, how's life in Jump City?" Barbara asked, surprising Dick.
"It's good." He replied slightly nervous at her response.
"What about your team? The Teen Titans?" Dick nodded while looking for all emotions displayed on her face or by her actions. She seemed to actually care. He would have figured that she would at least be mad or jealous of the Titans since Dick had left without telling anyone and then suddenly joined a new team. He still even remembered how determined he was to go solo, but that all changed when he teamed up with Raven, Cyborg, Beast Boy, and Starfire.
"They're good people. Definitely something different." He smiled thinking of all the little things about his team. Starfire and the way she talked or her obsession with mustard. Beast Boy and his hatred for meat and his large sense of humor. Cyborg and his love for meat and his T-car. And Raven and her love for reading and the way she meditated. They were all things he loved about them.
"That's good. I'm glad you're happy." She smiled back then sipped some orange juice from her glass. There was soon an awkward silence that filled the room. Dick wanted to break the silence, but he didn't know how or if he should.
Though, soon enough, Tim did break it," Wait- aren't people gonna realize that Batman is missing from Gotham? What if they make the connection that Bruce was Batman? Then they'll find out about me and Babs." He turned to Dick- his eyes wide.
Dick pondered the question. He hadn't thought about how Gotham would soon realize that the big black bat wasn't patrolling it's streets anymore. He had been too busy mourning to even consider it. They all had.
He began to drink from his glass of orange juice when Barbara said four words he never imagined to hear," Dick can be Batman." The glass soon slipped from his grip and crashed on the floor.
"What?!" He yelled causing Alfred to notice the broken glass shards on the floor and begin to search for a broom and a rag.
"You can be the new Batman. He trained you, you know everything about what it takes to be Batman."
"No, I was never as good as him. I would just ruin his image. I've been in Jump City for so long. The crime rate is pretty low there and the villains aren't a big struggle. I haven't faced Gotham type villains in so long." Dick paused," And I have a team in Jump City. I can't just leave them."
"Just tell them what happened. They'll understand." Barbara said simply. Dick then lowered his head.
"They... don't know my identity." He said in barely a whisper. Alfred began wiping the wet juice off of the floor and picking up the sharp shards of glass.
Barbaras eyes went wide. She figured he would have told them. He had been with them for a couple of years now.
Dick looked ashamed. The topic had never really come up- Well, it did but he still didn't want to mention it. He didn't want the team looking at him as if he was some damaged circus orphan.
"So, no Batman then?" Tim frowned," Then that's means no Robin." The younger boys eyes fell and he looked devastated. Dick knew exactly how that felt. Not being able to be Robin is one of the reasons why he left in the first place. He didn't want the same thing to happen to Tim.
"Come on, Dick. You're the only one who can do it. Even if Jason were still alive, you would be the better choice. You have to do it."
"I have a team Barbara, and even if I didn't, I don't think I'll ever be able to put on that suit." Barbara slumped down in her chair.
Then Alfred spoke up as he finished cleaning up the mess of orange juice on the floor," Master Dick, I know this may not be the best moment for this, but Bruce insisted in his will that you own Wayne Tech. And if you don't take control within a week the company will be sold." Dick slumped in his chair.
The Boy Wonder felt as if everything was caving on him. He couldn't handle all of this pressure," I need some time," He rushed up the stairs not even finishing his breakfast.
