Chapter 6
A/N: I apologize for my absence. There have been some pressing personal matters that needed my undivided and prolonged attention. Thank you for your understanding!🙏🙏🙏
Copter's POV
My patient's quivering voice and the sight of his tear stricken face tugged at my heart. I really shouldn't have been a doctor. On many occasions I tended to let my emotions rule my brain and I tended to have soft spots for patients who needed some loving attention, patients who were hungry for attention because maybe they couldn't get it from anyone else.
Without further hesitation, without stopping to think, I bent and hugged Kimmon. I felt his arms encircle me immediately.
He buried his face into my shoulder. I held him gently and ran my hands up and down his back reassuringly. I allowed him to hug me tight until his sobs gradually subsided.
Suddenly the door was flung open. Kimmon and I broke our embrace and turned our faces to see who had rudely barged in without the courtesy of knocking before entering.
"Sweetheart, I forgot my car key......" Newwie's voice trailed off when he realized that Kim and I had been hugging each other. His eyes grew wide in a combination of shock and anger that were evident in his facial expression.
"What the hell is going on here???" Newwie demanded, rushing towards me and then pushing my shoulder forcefully with the tip of his fingers which made me step back without intending to.
"He was crying when I got here ... " I tried to explain but he did not let me finish.
"Was that a professional way to act, Dr. K? Huh??? Was it? Huh? Huh?" Newwie demanded, his face turning dark with suppressed anger.
Newwie was continuously pushing against my shoulders with the tips of his fingers as he was talking and I found myself stepping backward inch by inch until my back touched the wall.
"He asked me to comfort him with a hug and I complied," I replied, "I don't think that it was an inappropriate behavior on my part."
Newwie kept on poking at my shoulder with his fingers even as he could see that he could not push me back any farther.
"Newwie or whatever your name really is, listen to me!!!" Kimmon who had been quietly watching Newwie's and my interaction all this time, finally spoke up. "There was nothing inappropriate going on between me and my doctor! Go, get your car key, wherever it is in this room and get the hell out of here, right now!"
Newwie finally turned away from me and focused his attention on my patient.
"Sweetheart!" Newwie's voice softened considerably, "Why are you treating me like this? You know that I love you and I miss you! If hospital regulations would allow me, I would bring a folding bed and sleep here tonight to keep you company!"
"I will talk to the hospital administrator to waive the regulation for you so that you can be allowed to sleep here tonight and keep my patient company," I said.
I saw the hesitation on Newwie's face.
I knew it! I knew that he had been bluffing, that it was just all talk on his part. It was so easy to see through his act. I wondered if Kimmon believed that Newwie's offer to keep him company during the night was sincere.
I turned to Kimmon.
"Mr. Varodom, would you like me to leave now and defer my visit to tomorrow?" I asked, taking a few steps toward the door.
"I will be here tomorrow as well," Newwie declared threateningly.
"Of course you will be here tomorrow, since you will be staying the night, right?" I asked, challenging him to make good on his offer to keep my patient company during the night.
Before Newwie could reply, Kimmon turned to him, "Please do not stay the night, and do not visit me tomorrow. For as long as I don't remember who you really are, we have nothing to say to each other at this time. Besides, I would like to have a private conversation with my doctor."
Newwie's face fell in disappointment upon hearing Kimmon's words. He went up to Kimmon's bed and encircled Kimmon with his arms.
Newwie's action did not have any effect on Kimmon. Kimmon did not hug him back.
"Why are you doing this to me, sweetheart?" Newwie asked in a quivering voice. "You know that I want to be by your side always."
I suppressed the urge to snort in disgust. I wanted to say to him, 'if you wanted to be by his side always why did you visit him only now? Why not right after he got confined at this hospital?'
Kimmon heaved a sigh.
"Do I have to keep repeating myself? As far as I'm concerned, I have never seen you before. I don't know what my life was before I landed in this hospital bed. It may or may not be true that you are my fiance, but for now, until I am able to regain my memory, the only person I can trust is my doctor," Kimmon firmly said to Newwie.
Newwie tried to say something, possibly to make Kimmon change his mind, but Kimmon turned his face to the wall, not wanting to have anything more to do with Newwie.
Newwie had no choice but to admit defeat. He could tell that Kimmon meant everything that he had said. Newwie reluctantly let go of Kimmon.
Newwie looked menacingly at me before leaving the room and slamming the door shut after him.
Kimmon turned his face away from the wall the moment he heard Newwie leaving the room.
I was about to take my leave, seeing as Kimmon was no longer in tears, when I heard him say, "Can you hug me again, please, Dr. K?"
