Copter's POV
Even though I had a crazy busy shift, my mind kept drifting away, over to yesterday's event where P'Kim finally declared once and for all that he was so done and over with Newwie and that he had finally realized who it was that he truly loved, which was me.
The thought made me blush a little bit and made my mouth curve a little bit upward.
I noticed too late that Nurse Juliet was looking intently at me.
Shit, I had to curtail my thoughts. Nurse Juliet was a very keen observer. I guess it went with her training.
By noontime, after I had seen my last patient for the morning, I took out my phone from the pocket of my white coat and noted that I had several missed calls from P'Kim and a couple of text messages from him as well.
I had not known about them because I make it a point to mute my phone during my rounds to avoid any distractions.
I opened the text messages first.
"Why won't you take my calls???"
"Why are you ignoring me???"
Shit, did I jump too fast into a bad relationship?
Was I going to be dealing with a childish, demanding and possessive partner?
I tapped on P'Kim's number as I was walking out of the elevator and into the hospital lobby.
He took the call at the first ring.
"Copter! Finally! What took you so long to return my call? Are you attending to a very good looking patient? Is he more handsome than I am???"
I couldn't put a word in edgewise during the barrage of questions that he was throwing my way.
"Why won't you answer, Copter? Cat got your tongue?"
"If you will shut up for a second, I will be able to answer all your questions," I said during a pause from P'Kim.
"Okay, I'm listening," I heard P'Kim say.
I was about to open my mouth, when he started speaking again.
"No, wait, let me ask you first. Are you on your lunch break? Can I come to the hospital to see you?"
"I wouldn't advise it, P'Kim."
"Why won't you let me see you??? Are you seeing someone else???"
I heaved a sigh. Was I going to be dealing with a psycho partner as well?
"P'Kim," I tried to keep my irritation in check, "lunch break is really short for me. I just plan to grab a sandwich from the cafeteria and then go back to my patients. I would like to be able to leave my shift on time."
I heard him sigh at the other end.
"Very well," he said, "how about I pick you up from the hospital after your shift? What time does your shift end?"
"You don't have to pick me up," I said.
I was about to continue talking but he interrupted me with, "Why won't you let me pick you up at the hospital? You're making me very suspicious, Copter."
"I was about to tell you why when you interrupted me, P'Kim." I was on the verge of losing it with P'Kim.
"Okay, I'm listening," I heard him say.
"A tuna sandwich, please," I said to the hospital kitchen server behind the glass counter.
"Who are you talking to?" P'Kim said in a suspicious tone of voice.
"And a bottle of guava nectar to go with it," I added to my order.
"I asked who you were talking to, Copter. Why won't you answer me?"
I could not reply immediately because I was busy paying for my orders to the cashier.
"Okay, that's it, I'm driving over to your hospital," I heard P'Kim saying, and my phone screen went black.
Shit, he was getting too much for me to handle.
I couldn't help comparing him to Emily. Emily was never demanding of my time. I guess it had something to do with the fact that she was a doctor like me and understood my work schedule.
My phone started to ring just as I found myself a small table at a corner of the cafeteria.
It was Nurse Juliet calling me.
I took her call.
"Dr. K, you're having your lunch break at the cafeteria, right?" she asked.
"Yes," I replied curtly.
"I hope you don't mind that I told Kimmon where you were," I heard her say apologetically.
Oh shit. I hoped that P'Kim was not going to cause a scandal here.
"It's okay, Juliet," I found myself saying, 'but next time, please call me first before giving out any information to him. You don't owe him any information or explanation. Don't forget that he is no longer our patient."
"Yes, Dr. K," she said, "I'm sorry, it won't happen again."
"That's alright," I said, "I'll catch up with you later for our afternoon rounds."
"Yes, Dr. K, see you later." Nurse Juliet's voice sounded contrite.
I was halfway through my sandwich and my drink when I saw P'Kim walk into the cafeteria, craning his neck and looking around for me.
He had not seen me right away. I was so tempted to hide under the table.
The moment he saw me, he made a beeline towards my table.
"I see you're alone," was his first comment upon reaching me.
"Were you thinking otherwise?" I countered.
He pulled the empty chair by my table and sat on it, facing me.
"Copter, please forgive me for behaving this way," he said, taking my hand in his, "I need you to help me get out of this kind of behavior. I wasn't like this before I met Newwie."
Shit, I had forgotten all about Newwie and his betrayal towards P'Kim.
I wanted to kick myself for not being more understanding towards P'Kim.
"It's okay, P'Kim," I assured him, "everything will be alright from now on."
I felt him hold my hand tighter.
"I will try to be more aware of my behavior, but I might slip from time to time," he warned me.
"Don't worry," I said to him, "things will get better as time goes by."
He squeezed my hand tighter, tears starting to well up in his eyes.
"Would you like me to get you something to eat and drink?" I asked, to distract him from getting more emotional.
"Yes, please, Copter. I realized just now that I'm hungry," he replied gratefully.
"What would you like to have?" I asked, standing from my chair.
"Whatever you're having," he said, grabbing the remainder of my sandwich and taking a bite from it.
I quickly made my order to the hospital server.
"What you had earlier wasn't enough for you? You must be pretty hungry," the hospital server commented with a chuckle.
I just smiled back as I took the sandwich and drink from him. I was in no mood to make any explanations.
After paying the cashier, I made my way back to my table.
"Thanks, Copter," P'Kim said gratefully as he eagerly took the sandwich and the bottle of guava nectar.
He unwrapped the sandwich and broke it in half and handed the other half to me.
"Take this," he offered, "I ate the rest of your sandwich. I don't want you going hungry when you do the rest of your rounds."
I accepted his offer.
We ate together in silence.
Just as I put the last bit of my sandwich into my mouth, P'Kim spoke up.
"Do you have any photos of your ex-partner on your phone?"
I quickly stood up and surveyed the whole cafeteria that was buzzing with countless hospital visitors and hospital employees on their lunch break.
I debated long and hard with myself whether I should wring P'Kim's neck or not.
In the end, I decided not to.
