Chapter Three
(Please excuse this filler chapter. Chapter Four should be on its way.)
I just wanna leave this place behind. Every time I see your face in mine.
Dylan just wanted to get the whole thing over with. He didn't want to sit with Ariella any longer than he had to. The longer he sat with her, the less people would think of him. He had worked much too long to secure friends and a good reputation to lose it here.
He didn't even buy lunch. His stomach was upside down with uneasiness. Instead, he looked around the lunchroom until he spotted Ariella sitting on her own at a table. He watched her stab some food in a container before setting down her fork, yawning, and kicking her feet up on the table. She was wearing slip on shoes with dark skinny jeans and a T-shirt for a band Dylan didn't recognize. Her raven hair was as wavy as ever, even while pulled back into a ponytail. He didn't want to admit it, but she looked nice. He took a deep breath and walked over.
"Hey Scaredy Cat," she took her legs down and nodded to the chair across from her. "Don't feel like eating?"
"O-Oh, no, not exactly. W-will this take l-long?"
"What's the rush, Kitty?"
He frowned, "Kitty?"
She laughed, "You know, Scaredy Cat, shortened sort of- nevermind just sit down already."
He awkwardly sat across from her, unsure of what he should do.
"So, Dylan, sorry but the plan is too dangerous to explain right here in the middle of school."
"Wait, what? Why would you force me to come talk to you if you can't even tell me?"
Oh, I don't know, maybe it's because I haven't had a normal conversation since middle school and I don't know what else to do to show people I'm not as scary as when you first meet me? Ariella thought. However, telling her true intentions were never a strong suit of hers.
"Because it makes good material for those silly rumors. Have you heard any? What am I saying; of course, you have! They're so funny, wouldn't you agree?"
"I uh- Guess so?"
They sat in silent as Ariella gradually became irritated. Was it too much to start a conversation? She tapped her foot until she couldn't take the silence any longer.
"Why aren't you talking!" She snapped at Dylan. His eyes grew wide and he drew back as he began to studder.
"I-I don't know. W-what do you want to talk a about? H-how was your morning?"
She paused, "Fine. How was yours?"
"I-its been good."
They sat in more painful silence until Ariella's empathy finally decided kick in and take pity on Dylan's "reputation."
"Whatever. Just meet me at the park 30 minutes after school. Don't be later this time."
He didn't even hesitate. Instead, he grabbed his back and left to tell his friends he was only asking for help with a class they don't have.
Ariella, however, didn't hesitate to throw out the rest of her lunch and promptly leave the school. She went straight to the park to refresh her nerves and calm herself. She didn't think yelling at Dylan was going to make him any less scared of her.
She put in her headphones, set an alarm, and fell to sleep laying in the grass. An escape from the plastic school.
