Episode 4: Part 1
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - SEATTLE - DAWN - (HOURS AHEAD)
A high school's track field covered in snow. Students, teachers, janitors, and lunch servers rush out of the exits. RUNNING. Their shoes CRUNCH on snow. Everyone observes the sky. The ufo smudges the sky with a long, circular streak. A streak that is three dimensional.
Their phones record the sky. Their scared VOICES tangle. Frost SEEPS from everyone's lips.
STUDENT ONE
What is that?!
STUDENT TWO
Whatever it is its big as hell...
STUDENT TWO flips their phone's camera to view the sky. Instagram live. A few watchers view the steam.
STUDENT TWO
There is something crazy happening in the sky right now.
(circles camera)
A black smudge is-look it goes all the way around! What the fuck?!!
PHONE CAMERA VIEW: Vertical angle. Shaky camera work pans the sky. Showing a closer look at a wide, black streak peeking from behind fast moving clouds.
A few stray students exit the building, one of them is Adam. His expression is blank. His complexion pale.
TEACHER ONE
Stop that!
A teacher snatches a few phones from students and scrawls at the others. The teens WHINE in protest for their devices.
TEACHER TWO
Get back inside everyone, listen!
None of the teenagers listen, most continue recording while others check out the ufo in the sky. Confused.
TEACHER ONE
What do we do?
TEACHER TWO
I'm not sure...should we send them home?
The principal PUSHES pass Adam, JOGGING as he gawks at the ufo. Security guards follow after him. The principal surveys the sky. Wide eyed.
PRINCIPAL
(barks)
Kids get back inside now!!!
The security guards direct the teenagers to the doors, SHOVING the kids towards the building, who CHAT on phones and with each other. In the background, the kids file slowly inside the school. The adults on the track field stare in awe at the sky.
PRINCIPAL (CONT'D)
A global warning has been issued. We all have to stay put.
The AIR RAID SIREN SOUNDS.
No one speaks as it BLARES. Students quicken their pace into the building in the background. LOUD COMMOTION. SCREAMS.
UP CLOSE: The thing in the sky GRIPS a tighter hold to Earth's Ozone.
ZINGING.
INT. OVAL OFFICE - WHITE HOUSE - WASHINGTON D.C. - MORNING (HOURS AHEAD)
In The Oval Office of The White House, a man sits at a fine desk. Security guards and a general stand around him. This is Thomas White, The President Of The United States (55) Average height, fair, and slim, dressed in a classic suit.
A woman enters the office. This is Julia Flores, The Vice President (47) Average height and weight, pretty, wearing a blouse, pencil skirt, tights, and heels.
PRESIDENT - THOMAS
Prepare to send observation jets up. Ready military transportation vehicles for citizens, allow no personal vehicle traffic. Have an announcement broadcasted every five minutes to make this is clear to the public. This needs to be a smooth process.
VICE PRESIDENT - JULIA
That will be a difficult task to stop
citizens from driving on their own, sir.
She frowns.
PRESIDENT - THOMAS
As I said before, make an announcement run every five minutes. Drill it into their heads. Those who choose to take it into their own hands and drive, will end up abandoned in traffic causing pile-ups. Then we'll have another problem on our hands. If that's the case, general, you will command police officers to search cars and escort passengers from them. Please begin doing so.
GENERAL
Yes, sir.
The GENERAL salutes him, then STEPS out of the office. THOMAS DIALS a number on a phone on his desk. JULIA WRITES in a notebook.
PRESIDENT - THOMAS
Transfer me to The Secretary Of Defense, now!
Heat HISSES from a vent on the ceiling. Three windows look out to a snow filled garden. The security guards stand still, their eyes eagerly searching the windows, hands on their guns.
PRESIDENT - THOMAS (CONT'D)
Contact all armed forces, get every state on red alert. Search houses and cars,
every citizen's priority is to be strapped in trucks and buses until military transportation is up and available. Deliver everyone to forts and bases within each state.
Julia gives him a disapproving look.
VICE PRESIDENT - JULIA
Will there be enough capacity? We're
talking about housing millions of Americans.
PRESIDENT - THOMAS
(to both her and the phone)
Also mark police stations, courthouses, churches,
gyms and camps as temporary safe destinations.
He massages his temples and HUFFS.
PRESIDENT - THOMAS (CONT'D)
We have to act fast before this
thing becomes hostile again.
Julia PRESSES a BlueTooth piece closer to her ear and listens.
VICE PRESIDENT - JULIA
Sir, China, The United Kingdom, Canada,
Russia, and Nigeria are demanding answers.
PRESIDENT
Get that done now.
He HANGS up the phone, stands, and goes to the windows, looking onto the garden. The security guards take a few STEPS up, as he moves. The President doesn't speak for a moment.
The AIR RAID SIREN begins to BLARE outside, send long VIBRATIONS through the glass of the windows.
The President's body stiffens like a board.
PRESIDENT - THOMAS (CONT'D)
(anxious)
What is this? Why is it just...frozen like that? What the
hell is it doing?! It's covering the whole damn planet!
The black matter in the sky glows white around the edges. Goosebumps form on the back Thomas's neck. His hands flinch at the sides of his suit.
PRESIDENT (CONT'D)
(breaking voice)
JUST LEAVE WHATEVER THE HELL YOU ARE!!!
Julia approaches him, HEELS TAPPING FAST. Her expression strong and vengeful.
VICE PRESIDENT - JULIA
(firm)
Keep calm, sir and think about your country.
What will be your strategy after the evacuation?
THE PRESIDENT P.O.V: A LOUD HEARTBEAT MUFFLES the voice of Julia. His eyesight sets on the sky, bouncing around the black matter, scanning the length, the width.
The President's fingertips raise and TAP on the glass of the window. In a strange daze. The security guards share worried looks with one another, SHIFTING their weight.
VICE PRESIDENT - JULIA (CONT'D)
It's time for your bracing speech.
PRESIDENT
(lowly)
We have no answers... and no plan, why should we? That thing defies gravity...our very own knowledge.
Just tell everyone in this estate, in this world, that all they can do is get our families and hide. Just tell...
His voice TRAILS off as his eyes go glossy, without much blinking, while peering scarily at the ufo. The Vice President eyes him. Disappointedly. Julia stares at him for a few seconds, incredulously. Waiting. Fuming, before WALKING out of the office.
