chapter 8: carousel

The violent wind bit even through your leather jacket as the five of you trudged through the deepening snow. You could only imagine how Alice was feeling...

You held a hand up to shield your eyes from the flurry of white and a violent shiver shook your bones. You and the other had to find shelter soon.

Turning your face away from the whipping wind, you caught sight of Ralph who was a little bit behind. You stopped, motioning with your hand for him to hurry up. He saw, and stumbled up through the snow.

As he approached, you could see some leaking blue blood from his face start to crystallize. It sparkled, like a geode, however it could not have been good for his inner workings.

"C'mon, Ralph", you rushed him along, grabbing his wrist. You stumbled a little, trying to gain traction on the snowy ground and to catch up with Luther and Kara when you heard it. That whirring again, only louder.

You turned your head back to view Ralph, face scrunched in confusion. It quickly melted into surprise when you saw the androids face dusted blue. He looked troubled, deeply confused almost.

"Ralph?", you said, stopping entirely to see his face, placing your free hand on his should and turning him to completely face you. "Are you ok?".

No, Ralph was not ok. He felt warm again, however it was much greater then it was in the car. You still held his wrist and he eyed your hands wearily. He blinked rapidly.

"No, Ralph is ok..", he mumbled, "He's just... tired". Tired? Androids don't get tired.

Your eyes glinted in worry. "Are... you sure?". His face contorted in annoyance, barring his teeth. "HE IS FINE!", Ralph hissed, squeezing his eyes closed.

You frowned at him, and he saw. His face mirrored yours as you let go of his wrist and walked ahead. "Ok... just know I'm here for you".

"We have to find shelter...", Kara said worriedly, looking at Alice's shaking form. Luther nodded. "It's best we split up and look..".

Ralph saw you nod, determined look on your face and walk the opposite direction. He saw you sneak a still worried glance at him again. He frowned, hoping you weren't upset at him.

He felt like slapping himself. 'It's... it's not Ralph's fault! His sensors are busted... he can't tell what's wrong with him...', he thought anxiously to himself, wrapping his arms around himself in a self-embrace.

Kara's voice echoed through the abandoned amusement park. "Over here!".

He followed the voice, making his way over to some kind of abandoned restaurant. Kara and Luther as well as Alice were there and he could see you making your way over.

The five of you entered the abandoned building. Damn. This place was actually kind of sad. You can faintly remember your Aunt Carol taking you here with your baby cousin when you were young. You smiled at the fond memory, taking a seat and watching Kara light a fire for Alice.

The rusting attractions and rides caused a nostalgic ache in your chest. This place was once so happy and full of life and happy screaming children. You were snapped out of your daydream as someone sat beside you.

You looked over at the frowning face of Ralph. "Hey, Ra-".
"Ralph is sorry! Please forgive him he just...", he cut your off, his face glowing with a blue tint. "F-feels warm when he's around you or-", his face darkened, then mumbled, "or t-touches you...". His LED was flashing yellow and red.

His head shot up, not expecting to hear you laugh. You looked up to him, eyes wide and giving an ugly snort.

"AHAH- OH- OH MY GOD?", You cackled, wiping away a fake tear as Ralph gave you the most bewildered look ever conceived.

You smiled, laughter dying down. You grabbed his hand and intertwined your fingers. "I think you just have a crush on me..".

"What?".

"You love me, dumbshit-".

Your moment was cut off by the windows bashing in as people, or maybe androids, swing in from the out side. You stood straight up from your seat, standing protectively in from of Ralph, pulling your dual guns out on instinct. Kara did almost the same for Alice, rushing over to shield her from the oncoming danger. Luther pulled a gun out of the bag, aiming it at the forms.

The fog from the cold snow dispersed, revealing a group of identical androids. Kara pulled Alice closer to her. "Who are you? What do you want?", she shouted, obviously distressed.

"Don't be afraid... we don't want to hurt you..", an android said, lifting his arms. You heard the sheathing of metal and turned your head to she Ralph with his knife half pulled out. "Ralph, no.... I think their friends...". He looked you in the eyes skeptically, yet still lowered his knife.

"We're just like you... our name is Jerry", he lowered his arms, eyes glittering. "We were working here before the park closed...".

"We didn't mean to frighten you, but sometimes humans come here to hurt us.", his eyes drifted over you for a second. Wow, rude, but understandable. He looked away, then continued.
"We just wanted to see who was there.. what are you doing here?", he said critically, many eyes flitting over you and the others. They seemed to be some sort of hive mind. How interesting!

"We were looking for shelter for the night", Kara answered, "We'll be gone tomorrow-". The kind Jerry cut her off. "A little girl!", he cheered, eyes catching Alice's, "We haven't seen one for a long time!". You smiled lightly, your heart lighting up with warmth at the androids' excited smile. "Children used to love to come and see us!".

The Jerrys' smile faltered as he caught sight of Alice's expression. "She looks sad...". Kara sighed, looking down at Alice with a frown. "The last few days have been... difficult". The Jerry's smiled soon returned as he placed his hands on his knees and smiled excitedly at Alice.

"We have something to show her! Something fun! She'll love it! ...Does she want to see?". Kara falsely smiled, answering, "Oh, I don't think she-". Alice's smile told the Jerrys' differently. "She should follow us then!".

You gave Kara a look. "Please, Kara? It will be really good for Alice after all this... absolute garbage shit...". Alice smiled widely, chasing after the Jerrys'. "Come on, Kara!". You smiled, running out with her. "Yeah, Kara, C'mon!".

Everyone followed the Jerrys' out and they surrounded an old carousel. They all jumped excitedly as you and Alice approached the machine, the other three behind. "Be our guest", the Jerrys' cheered, gesturing to it. You smiled, approaching a lever and pulling it, and then... the most amazing thing happened. The entire thing lit up with many bright colors, illuminating everything in its wake. Even a few colored fairy lights could be seen twinkling around.

"The little one can climb on board!", a Jerry said, then shouted, "The carousel is about to begin!". You looked at Alice with a smile, then helped her onto a pale seahorse. As soon as she was on, you felt something grabbing your wrist. Assuming it was one of the Jerrys', you turned only seeing Ralph.

"Ralph.... wants to ride the thingy, too", he said, a bit embarrassed. You grinned childishly at him, tugging him towards one of the on-board benches parents would usually sit to watch their rowdy children.

"C'mon then!".
