TWENTY NINE: Cooking By The Book

I was the last one awake, and it was weird to actually wake up nestled in Dabi's arms. I was so used to him disappearing throughout the night, but I had wished it had happened under better circumstances.

Spinner and Twice had made themselves right at home; a dog each, sitting and watching television, and Toga was nowhere in sight. When I peered up with groggy eyes, I was met with a calm ocean hue.
"About time you woke up. I can't feel my legs." Dabi mumbled in slight agitation. Ignoring him, I just snuggled closer into his chest and sighed.

If they're still here...that means it wasn't a nightmare...Magne is...

"What time is it..?" I asked with a yawn, rubbing my eyes as I tried to focus.
"Like...ten, or someth'n..." Spinner called out from from his place on the floor, and I nearly cracked Dabi right in the throat with a flyaway elbow as I scrambled to my feet.
"WHAT?! I'M GONNA BE SO LATE FOR SCHOOL!" I shrieked in panic, though my body was still too tired to kick into rush mode.

"Chill out, Tenderfoot...I got Shank Skank to sort it out. You've got a day off, so quit it..." Dabi proceeded to stretch out in the recliner and rested his arms behind his head. I relaxed immediately; relieved that I didn't have to put on a cheery mask for my friends and classmates.
"Oh...Thanks..." I sighed before quirking a brow. "Where is Toga, anyway?"

"Kitchen..." Spinner jumped in again without taking his eyes off the TV set. "...I wouldn't go in there if I were you."

Oh my stars, I have a yandere loose in my house..!

"Um...Yeah, I'm definitely going in there..." I announced; drawing out my words, before Dabi coughed, which grabbed my attention.
"I'd listen to the overgrown gecko, sweet-cheeks..." There was a kind of warning in his eyes, but of course I didn't heed it. As I started off, Twice nearly bent over backwards; his mask rolled up to the bridge of his nose.
"Another terrible decision made by the kid! Can you pretty please get me a glass of cereal water?"

My mind was buzzing as I left the room, leaving both Dabi and Spinner to brutally taunt the split-brained man about his unique name for milk. I was expecting the worst; scorched cabinets and countertops, food splattered everywhere, or, the most concerning, a fresh corpse hacked to bits on the linoleum.

When I entered the room, I wasn't quite sure if I was relieved or not.

Shigaraki Tomura was sitting at the dining table with the paper pinched almost delicately between four fingers either side. Kurogiri was preparing some kind of hearty breakfast by the stove, and Toga was bopping excitedly beside him, wearing my mother's bright orange apron.

"Good morning, Ms. (Y/N). I apologise for our intrusion, but we were rather concerned when our comrades never returned last night. I hope you don't mind me taking the liberty of making use of your kitchen?" As usual, Kurogiri greeted me with the utmost respect, and I kind of just gave him an awkward, wonky grin and a thumbs up.

"That's...um...fine...Thank you..?" I could feel sweat beading on my brow as my eyes returned to Shigaraki; fatherless, who had lowered his paper; my paper, just enough so he could stare into the depths of my quaking soul.

Be cool, be chill, be civil...

"I assume you heard that Magne kicked the bucket, then?" He asked rather bluntly, and I tried to keep myself composed. Nodding, I cautiously moved to take the seat at the furthest end of the table.
"Y..yeah...I'm sorry..." I murmured quietly, my hands just fidgeting atop the wooden surface as I tried to ignore the painful itch on the center of my torso. Right where I had his hand print embedded for life.

"Mmm...Shame, really...she had so much potential..." I was about to lose my cool, which was unheard of for me when I hadn't overstayed my welcome in predatory form, but it all washed away with the continuation of his words. "...you know, as a person...She deserved to live to see the moment we refresh this putrid society..."

The only sound that was made for the longest time was the eggs sizzling upon the stove top. Truly, I was shocked to see Shigaraki showing any kind of emotion, but in this moment, his carnelian eyes were downcast and filled with something akin to lament. He was human, just like the rest of us.

"Eggs, eggs, what's on the menu?!" The pair of us flinched slightly as Toga bellowed loudly from her place on the counter; her legs swinging back and forth. It was then that I noticed she was wearing my clothing. I had to admit, she looked rather adorable in my (F/C) scoop-neck and denim shorts, so I couldn't even be mad that she had quite obviously gone through my room.
"Eggs, hash browns, sauteed tomato and onion, with a side of bacon and lemon juice...That is what is on the menu, Ms. Toga...Not simply eggs..." Kurogiri sounded so done with life, and I couldn't blame him. He was the real MVP, having to act as a single parent to the entire league.

This man deserves a medal...

"Did somebody say bacon..? Pumbaa, noooooo!" Twice strolled in with the others in tow, and I felt the rest of the tension in my body ease as Dabi came to stand behind me, his hand coming to rest on my shoulder.

Wait a second...last night...did I say...and did he say...THE L WORD?!

My squeak seemed to reach Dabi's charred ears, and he leant down so that his face was beside mine.
"Either the lizard let one rip, or there's something on your mind..." He said in a low voice, so none of the others could hear him. They were too preoccupied by the thought of food, anyway. Chewing on my lip, I couldn't really help the pair of perky puppy ears that shot out from my tangled (H/C) hair and flattened in embarrassment.

"W..well...last night...I said...that I...l..love you...and...you...said it back..? O..or...was I dreaming..?" There seemed to be a bit of a frog in my throat as I tried to whisper, and I felt a warm puff of air blow from my boyfriend's nose as he stared into the wooden tabletop.
"Tch...Definitely dreaming..." He straightened himself up again, and his hand moved away from my shoulder, causing it to droop down with the rest of my body, as well as my spirit.

Oh...Of course it was...I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up.

Just as Kurogiri began to direct his three little kitchen-hands in setting the table and gathering condiments, there was a knock at the door. The entire world seemed to freeze at the sound, and my (E/C) eyes grew wide. Here I was, skipping school, sitting in my kitchen with six of the most wanted criminals in Japan, and there was somebody at my door.
"Answer it, silly!" Toga shouted as she motioned her head towards the noise, which had begun to repeat, and I stumbled to my feet in a rush.

"J..just stay quiet, okay..?" I instructed as I walked towards the entryway with heavy feet. I had no idea who it would be at this time of day, considering school was still very much in session. Hoping and praying that it was just a delivery man, I forced myself not to hesitate once I grabbed the knob and opened the door.

Oh...Oh dear...

"Hey, (Y/N)! I tried to find you at school, but they said you were absent..." Kirishima's hand was scratching through his crimson hair, which was in its rare state of being without any gel or product. "I...uh...I just wanted to make sure you were okay? You're not sick or anything, are you?" I wanted to be able to speak without stammering, but I knew it would happen. He should have been in class, but no, he was right here in front of me, and I felt like the worst person in the entire world having to keep such a secret from him.

"W..well...I'm not really feeling too good today, Eiji..." I chuckled forcibly, and it wasn't exactly a lie. "You see...I...uh..." I nearly wet my pants as a hand slung over my shoulder from beside me, and the confused look on Kirishima's face only doubled my fear.
"Oooh, who's this? What a handsome little man!" My neck felt like it had rusted in place as I turned my head, and what I saw had me ready to screech. A much older lady stood beside me, and she had a large smile plastered across her face. "(N/N), you didn't tell me you had such good looking friends! What a cutie!"

W..wait...TOGA?!

Kirishima's face began to bloom as he laughed; holding his hand out to the woman who I really hoped was Toga in disguise, and she took it happily.
"Sorry for the intrusion, Ma'am! My name's Kirishima Eijiro! I just wanted to stop by and make sure (Y/N) was alright, seeing as she was absent today." He was so polite, and I was actually shocked that Toga was being such a convincing elder.

"She's just a little under the weather, dear. Nothing at all to worry about! Just call me Nanna Himiko! I used to watch her darling mother back in the day, so little (N/N) here is like a granddaughter to me. When I heard she was home alone and not feeling too crash hot, I just had to come and look after her!" I kept up my smiling facade as 'Nanna Himiko' pinched my cheek a little too hard, and I felt so much relief; as well as guilt, rush over me when Kirishima ate up our little act.

"(Y/N) really is one of those people you just can't help but looooooooooo-k after!" He coughed into his hand and rubbed the back of his neck. "Look after...yeah...Anyway, I'm glad you're alright, and that you have someone taking care of you. We got the rest of the day off after having a little match against one of the big three, so I had free time and...when you weren't there...yeah...God, I probably sound like an unmanly stalker, right?!" The poor boy was rambling, and I felt like dirt. I hated lying in general, but to Kirishima? To Amajiki? To the people I was closest to? It was awful.

"N..not at all...It's sweet, Eiji...Thank you..." I mustered up a tired smile, even though my cheek was still pinched between two wrinkly fingers. "Wait...so you went up against Mirio..? He flexed on everyone, right..?"
"Oh man, yeah...That guy is tough...I actually had a bit of a chat to Amajiki, too, before I tried to find you. He's gonna have a chat to Fatgum about me interning with you guys! Won't that be awesome?!"

Oh...Dabi's not gonna like this one bit...Fiddlesticks...

I clasped my hands together beneath my chin; managing to free myself from the demonic Toga pinch, and used every ounce of positive energy I had left to grin widely.
"That's amazing, Eiji! I'll be sure to put in a good word for you!" Seeing him smile like that, and be so excited, it really made me happy, but at the same time, I knew this could lead to bad news. Dabi had already tried to kill him once. I didn't want his jealousy to spiral out of control again and land one of my closest friends in a hospital bed, or worse.

"I hate to be a Strict Sally, but little (N/N) needs her rest! You two can catch up again in a day or two, when our little darling is feeling better!" Sneak 100 Level Toga piped up, and Kirishima looked a little disheartened, but a small smile quickly returned to his cherub face.
"I get ya, Ma'am! Nice to meet you!" He gave her a polite bow before turning to me. He reached out and pulled me into a gentle hug, and I reciprocated. It was a natural response, and honestly, if Dabi didn't like it, he'd just have to deal with it. He should know by now that he was the only one I wanted to be in a relationship with. "I hope you feel better soon, (Y/N)...I'll call you later, okay?"

"Yeah...Okay...Thanks for checking on me, Eiji..." I gave him a small nod once we parted, and he lingered for a few moments before starting off down the pathway to the front gate. Toga shut the door quickly, and I watched in a mildly stunned silence as she shifted back into her bubbly teenage form.
"He's fucking cute! Probably bleeds a lot, too!" She giggled, and I had to make sure I didn't look too disturbed by her comment as I moved back towards the kitchen.

"You deserve an Oscar! I've seen better acting in infomercials!" Twice shot us a pair of finger-guns as we reentered. The table was already set, and everybody beside a certain ravonette was already seated. Dabi looked absolutely bent out of shape, and he glared down at me as though I was the criminal.
"Mr. Dabi, please sit down before your meal gets cold." Kurogiri insisted loudly, as if to warn him not to start an argument, and the man begrudgingly complied, though he chose to sit in a seat away from me. Sighing sadly, I took my seat, which was between Toga and Kurogiri.
"Now then..." Shigaraki coughed and lifted his delicately held fork in the air to gain attention.

"...Let's discuss the plan to take this Overhaul fucker down..."
