THIRTY NINE: Cracked

"This is crazy boring! I haven't stabbed a single hero yet! I even brought my good knife..." Toga huffed, tapping her shining blade against the wall. She continued to complain as I sat on the ground; knees tucked to my chest, trying to figure out what to do.

Why would he let me go like that..? Friends or not...he's a hero...and now...I'm a...

"...r not even paying attention to me, are you..?" I blinked out of my personal realm and realised Toga was pouting at me.
"Uh...sorry..." I murmured, grunting as I stood up and brushed myself off.
"I said that I'm gonna go cause some trou~ble! Well, when Twicey gets back, cuz I want a cloney clone!" Back to unbridled excitement, Toga began to bounce on the spot, and I hummed in thought.
"I might...go for a wander...Make sure Eri is okay..."

My girl...gotta protect...W..wait...no...I gotta focus...

"Awh, well if you insist! If you find her, swipe her up, 'kay? She'd be super useful!" The peppy blond maniac approached me and placed a hand on my shoulder, suddenly looking serious. "And (N/N)...don't overdo it. Big Sis Magne wouldn't want you to get yourself hurt...and neither would Dabi...or me."

Serious Toga is terrifying...but...

Smiling weakly, I covered her hand with mine and nodded once.
"I..I know...Thanks, Toga...Same goes for you..." Parting ways, I started off through the maze of hallways, keeping a sharp ear out for any sign of life. There was definitely chaos in different areas, but I didn't want to get wrapped up in that. I just wanted to find Eri and make sure she was okay.

Amajiki and Kirishima were in the back of my mind, as was Fat and the others, but I knew they were strong enough to handle their own. I didn't have to worry about their wellbeing. Against all better judgement, I shifted back into a wolverine, knowing that, if I were to come across the young girl, she would recognise me as her companion.

I have to do this quick and get out of here...If I stay in a form like this for much longer...

The claws I had grown familiar with over the past few days clicked and clacked as I wandered the dark, winding corridors, my lips curling back at even the slightest shadow. I wanted to get out of there, even if I had to suffer a punishment from Shigaraki. There was too much at stake by staying, yet Eri was all I could think about. That, and mauling whoever even dared to breathe near me.

The urge to just turn literal tail and run was overwhelming. I could smell blood, and there was a chilling voice inside my head; growing louder with each passing second, telling me to head towards it. If it hadn't been for the hoarse shouting I heard from around the corner, I likely would have succumbed.

"Eri..! Everything's...okay. You'll be fine! Eri..!"

Is that..?

I overshot the corner as I raced to the sound, slamming hard into the wall. Barely giving myself enough time to recover, I was barreling towards the slumped, bleeding hero I was positive I knew. I just couldn't name them anymore.

Short blond hair was matted against his scalp, and the shredded red cape made my gums itch in want. If I hadn't had that dwindling grip on myself, I likely would have bitten him.

No...I know him...It's...uh...it's...Mirio! That's right...I think...He said Eri's name...She has to be close..! My girl...

Months ago, I would have stayed to make sure he was okay. He was definitely alive and at least a little conscious, but his eyes were shut tight, and his body looked ragged. I didn't have enough of myself left in me to look out for him.

The thunderous sounds of battle were clear as day to my mustelidae ears, so that's where my feet; or paws, took me. It was pure instinct now. My size and abilities as a wolverine were certainly no match for whatever would greet me ahead, but my Eri was there. My girl who was one of two things on my mind. Protect my girl, and fight anybody else.

My (E/C) eyes; abnormal against thick tufts of russet fur, widened when I saw her from behind, standing before jagged chaos. Her weak, shaking voice had my blood pumping, and I skidded to a halt by her side. She barely flinched.
"...and in e..exchange...y..you need to fix everyone back to normal..!"

When Overhaul came into my line of sight, I was torn. There wasn't really anything stopping me from charging and attacking, apart from the knowledge that I would never win. One touch and I would cease to exist. As he responded to her plea, I began to nudge into her side with my muzzle, trying to urge her to turn away. The thought to change back into my human self came to mind, but the place was littered with heroes. My life would come to an end if I messed up. I wasn't even sure there was a human self to go back to at this point.

"...you are unwanted."

Overhaul's words spat out like salt and lemon into a fresh wound. His scent was pure rot, and I could feel the hateful snarl ripping from my throat as I took a lumbering step in front of the small child, feeling her fingers curl into my hackles.

You're rotted...Inside and out you're toxic...poison...Get away..! Stay away or I'll kill you, you piece of shit..!

People were yelling and moving in on the Yakuza villain, and the sheer volume hurt my head. Some green kid yelling about being her hero, and some bleeding twig of a man, who reeked of impending death. All of them wanted my girl, but I wouldn't let anyone have her.

"N..Nozomi...Run away..." Eri's whimpers were so soft, but they sliced into me as though she had screamed. "...y..you'll get hurt too..." I stood my ground, ignoring her selfless request. If worst came to worst, I would grab her dress in my teeth and run. No harm was going to come to my girl.

I had been so sure of my plan before the roof caved in. With all the dust and debris flying around, I couldn't see a thing, but a feeling of dread washed over me only moments after.

Eri...moved..!

Panicking, I tried to run, barely catching her scent above everything else, but there was something stopping me. The feeling was tight around my middle, and the second I realised my paws were no longer touching the ground, I began to hiss loudly, flailing about in hopeless protest.

"Oi, quit it, (N/N)..! It's just us!" A pitched, feminine voice chuckled as I neared the hole in the ceiling, but it didn't ease me one bit. Clawing viciously at the crumbling concrete and ashfalt, I dragged myself up, blindly snapping and snarling at whatever shape I could make out.

Put me back! Take me back to my girl..!

"M..Miss (Y/N)..?! Please calm down..! This behaviour is-" The deeper voice speaking cut off into a muffled yelp as my teeth sunk into flesh. The taste of blood was agonisingly sweet as it trickled down my throat and out the sides of my elongated mouth, but my quirk gave out. Reverting back to my human form, I still maintained my death lock on whatever I had bitten onto, glaring homicidal daggers at the mask of white.

"Awww, she got you rabies! And you didn't get her a damn thing, Compress! Talk about bad etiquette!"

Wait...

"Holy fuckballs...She's actually lost it..." That voice definitely belonged to Toga. My jaw laxing slightly, I glanced to my side, seeing the blond girl looking incredibly confused, and almost stark naked. To the other side, Twice was crouched with his hands hovering over me, seemingly unsure as to what to do. Finally, looking up, I recognised the white mask.

I had never leapt away from something as fast as I had in that moment. When I saw that bleeding arm; or lack thereof, I began to hyperventilate.
"N..no...I..I'm s..sorry...I..I didn't...I didn't mean t..to...Y..Your arm...I..I-"
"Please, do not fret..." When the masked man's hand reached towards me in comfort, I pulled back, but I was unsure why. Something in my pounding head was telling me he was going to hurt me, or I would hurt him. Again. "This amputation was certainly not your doing, my dear, I can assure you of that. I can understand it would be a shock, considering we haven't met since we lost out dear comrade. Besides, this form of mine is merely a clone of the original."

Overhaul...did that..?

Even so, the nub of his left arm was bleeding, quite profusely. I hated seeing it, and I hated that the taste in my mouth was still the same. Agonisingly sweet.
"Well, we can chit chat later! We gotta bounce! Twicey, carry (N/N), would ya? Compress, you're a copy, so just, like, try t'snatch the kid, right? Coolio!" Toga spouted her orders so causally, but I didn't care. I was too wrapped up in my own head to even give a damn when I was hoisted into Twice's arms.

"You're absolutely fine and dandy! You don't look too crash hot, kid..." The man pointed out, adjusting the pale cloth covering the left side of his head, where his mask had torn.
"I'm fine...Put me the fuck down..." I murmured, hating the feeling of being in his hold. I didn't even feel bad when Twice flinched at my harsh tone. My feet were moving from the moment they touched the ground, and I kept a steady pace as we left the scene. It all felt wrong. Not just leaving the battle and the poor, defenseless little girl; my girl, but my entire self. My clock seemed to have ticked too far over this time around. I hadn't felt so aggravated or distressed in all my life.

Even when we stopped to make the long awaited call to Shigaraki, I couldn't keep still. Pacing back and forth, my nails dug into the heels of my hands, and my teeth felt like they would soon be ground into powder. Toga's eyes followed me back and forth as she spoke on the phone, a small frown apparent as she placed her hand over her mouth, dipping closer to the receiver.

"You should probably tell Dabi that his girlfriend has like...uh...completely fucking cracked..."
