(57) Ultimatum

James had managed to levitate him back to the closest wizarding settlement, and with the help of a kind gentleman, side-apparated to Mungo's.

He was waiting outside the room where, Sirius had been transported too.

He stood up as soon as the doctor came out.

'How's he doing, doc?' James asked breathlessly.
'I am afraid, not so good. Normally I wouldn't want to discourage my patient's guests but the truth is there is a fair amount of chance he dies.'

'I am in no mood to help Black.' Sarah said.

'Come on, it's just a matter of seconds.' Remus said.
'I am sorry but after the way he snapped on me, I just don't think he wants to be helped.' Sarah shrugged.

'He would do it for you.' Remus said.
'Would he, though?' Sarah asked. 'All I did was create an argument between the best of friends.' Sarah said.

'What's going on?' Katherine joined the conversation walking to the three of them.
Sarah sighed. 'Join the party. We are going to Las Vegas.' Sarah made a face.
***
'You can see him now.' The doctor said.

James nodded, then took a breath and entered the room.

Sirius's arms were connected to many wires and he had an oxygen mask.

'Why are you so stupid?' James asked, his voice dissolving in thin air getting no reply from the unconscious Sirius.

James sighed sitting in the chair close to him.
***
'They aren't here.' Sarah said.
'Accio Note.' Remus and a bunch of sheets flew his way.

'Nothing, nothing and nothing.' Peter sighed, grovelling through the mess.

'Oh no.' Katherine said in a silent whisper.
She held a note.

'What is it?' Remus asked.
'It's from potter. Sirius is in mungo's. And it's bad.' Katherine said.

'This can't be happening.' Remus said shaking his head.
***
'Marlene, I thought you ought to know this.' Remus said.

'What? What is she doing here?' Marlene said with a voice of disgust.
Sarah made a face at her and mimicked her.

'It's about Sirius. He's in mungo's.' Remus said slowly pausing to let the fact sink in.

'He's okay, isn't he?' Marlene asked after a second of shock.
'I don't really know. Zabini, James and Peter are there.'

'Thanks for telling me.'
'I owe that much to you. Thank Sarah, though. She was the one who said you deserved to know first.' Remus said.

Marlene change the topic, 'So how are you going there?' Marlene asked.

'I know how to apparate.' Sarah said.
***
It was night. They had all left back to hogwarts. Marlene insisted she would be back within next morning.

She sat in the chair.
She sat still, looking at the moonlight.

'Marls.' Sirius croaked.
'Oh my god. Thank merlin, you are alive. I was worried sick.' Marlene sighed.

'I am sorry.' Sirius said.
'Just get well.' Marlene said.

'I love you.' Sirius said.
Marlene didn't reply.

'I really do. I am sorry for everything.' Sirius whispered, his breathing strained.

'Sirius, I don't think you should be talking. You need rest.' Marlene said.

'Why are you here, anyway?' Sirius asked. 'If you don't even care to give a straight reply.'

'I care about you, Sirius.'

'Then why can't you say you love me too?' Sirius croaked.
'Will you leave behind all plans for revenge against Orion whether he gets released or not?' Marlene asked.

'Which will it be? Vengeance or Love?' Marlene asked.
Sirius paused for a while.

'Love.' He replied fading into sleep.
***
Remus found it hard to concentrate in potions with Sirius in such a condition.

'I heard about Sirius.' Dorcas said.
'Yeah.' Remus said.

'How are you doing?' Dorcas asked.
'How do you think I am doing?'

'Not good?'
'Bingo.'

'Trust me, he's going to be okay. It was just a moment of recklessness on his part.' Dorcas said.
'That could risk his life.' Remus said.

'Don't blame yourself.' Dorcas said.
'How did you-'

'Remus, I know you. You will be blaming yourself for what happened to Sirius, even though you had nothing to do with it.' Dorcas said.

'Marlene was right. I owed it to her to not leave him.' Remus sighed.

'He wasn't alone. He had James. But it wasn't his fault either.' Dorcas said.
'Then whose fault was it?'

'Assigning blame doesn't help anything. Now, throw your mind away from it. Pass me the aconite fluid and pearl dust, will you?' Dorcas asked.

Sirius was back in his dreams filled with Orion and his laughs. Then he was back in the car.

He went through the whole scene again.
After escaping death a few times, he had finally heaved a breath of relief.

And then a car hit him. It was a black convertible.

Sirius laid there sprawling in pain, blood oozing out and the car just took off, without a glance.

Sirius could see the car going.
He could see a small symbol at the back written Black, the same as his.

The car turned around and stopped with a skid.
And a person got out of it.

The person wore a black hoodie and his face wasn't visible.

The wind blew it off his face for a moment.

Sirius woke up in cold sweat.
He knew who had tried to kill him.
It was his own, brother.

Regulus.
Then he passed out.
When he woke up again, he had no memory of that anymore.
