Dead
Barry stared at Felicity, at the tears falling down her face.
It... it was true, wasn't it? He was gone. Dead.
Barry let loose a sob as he hugged her close. He felt like he would fall if she wasn't there to support him.
Ollie was gone. The Green Arrow was gone. Barry hadn't saved him.
Barry continued to hug her tightly, but it felt like his mind was drifting from his body. He was thinking of all the sweet, romantic things Oliver had done, was going to do... That he couldn't do. Not anymore.
No one would understand. No one would know why it felt like his soul was being shattered.
Because no one knew. No one knew that Barry was going to propose in a week. No one knew that they were going to teach their children archery. No one knew that Oliver had a boyfriend.
And now they wouldn't. Now, none of it mattered. Oliver was gone.
"Barry? Barry?!"
Barry blinked and realized Thea, Felicity, Diggle, and Laurel were staring at him. They all had tears, too, but Barry knew they didn't understand.
"Uh... Sorry," Barry whispered as he pulled back from Felicity. He wiped at his eyes. Before they could reply, he ran.
What else was there to do?
...
"What is going on, Barry!? You've been distant since that trip to Star and I want to know why!"
Barry blinked at a spot in the distance as if he couldn't hear them.
When he realized all eyes were on him, however, he shifted his attention.
"Huh?"
Caitlin sighed. "What's wrong, Barry? Why are you being so distant?"
Barry stared at her for a moment. He looked down.
Caitlin got what he was asking.
"Can we have a moment?" she asked. Iris, Joe, and Harry all nodded and walked away while Caitlin just sat next to Barry on the medical bed.
"Oliver's dead," Barry said simply. Caitlin knew about that, of course, and figured it would hit Barry hard, but she knew there was something else.
"We were going to get engaged."
There it was.
Caitlin understood perfectly. Losing your fiancee, then your husband... well, she would understand better than anyone.
Caitlin also knew that right now, Barry didn't want to talk. He just wanted to be comforted.
That Caitlin could do.
So she hugged him tightly, ignoring the slight wince he made. He needed this more than those stitches needed to stay intact.
She didn't know how long it would take him to move on. Not forget, but to love again. She still hadn't moved on fully, so she wouldn't be able to tell him.
For now, just letting Barry sob into her shirt was what he needed. She would do everything she could to help him as would Cisco and Joe and Iris and Harry. He was not alone.
And right now, that was all that mattered.
