Prompt: Begin with the sentence: In the background, I could hear an awful commotion, men's voices raised and women screaming.

Author's Note: I promise, this isn't about world war.

In the background, I could hear an awful commotion, men's voices raised and women screaming. There were announcements being made. "Evacuate," they said. We all knew what that was code for – the arrival of the oxygen molecules. It's explosive and painful, but that, apparently, is the only way the humans attain water.

I looked around to see panic in everybody's eyes. "Run!" Some shouted, while other were shouting, "hide!" Some stayed quiet and waited for destruction to swallow them up. It was chaotic. The word 'water' was enough to strike terror on us. It's our nature to be highly reactive, especially with oxygen. We couldn't help it, and the scientists were using it to their advantage.

We were trapped in this container. There was no place to run, and no place to hide. Very few of us realised that from the time were separated from our families.

We even knew this day was inevitable. Once we combine with oxygen, we lose our identity and our nature. We wouldn't be 'hydrogen' anymore. It would deform us and every moment we spend with the oxygen molecules will be agonising. There's no escape from that, we'll be in a polar covalent bond.

Nobody knows if this assumption is true. Judging from the loud explosion, everybody thinks (almost knows) that we are all doomed.

And then it happened.

The lid of the container slowly opened, exposing us to the oxygen gas.

They looked like angels. The commotion suddenly came to a stop, as if everything froze for that split second. As soon as that moment passed, a loud bang was heard and we were attached to the the oxygen molecules. We couldn't even process how it happened because it was fast. The loud bang and the 'click' sound when we were attached to the molecules sent a chill down my spine. My arteries were filled with energy, I could feel it. The best feeling in the world.

I wasn't hydrogen anymore. I was Di hydrogen Oxide.
