Chapter 40: Abs and overheard conversations
Aubrey couldn't stop thinking about him.
Jason had gone home after breakfast, but her mind was still racing. Every little moment from the night before—how she'd woken up with him so close to her, the way he'd felt wrapped around her, the quiet intensity of their morning together—it all replayed in her head on a loop.
She had never been in a situation like that before. Waking up with him so close, feeling his warmth and the steady rise and fall of his chest against her... it had thrown her completely off balance.
Sitting on her couch, Aubrey hugged a pillow tightly to her chest, her cheeks burning with embarrassment as the memory flooded back. God, what was I supposed to do? She had been so flustered when she woke up that she hadn't even known how to breathe properly.
He was... snuggled into me, she thought, the blush on her cheeks deepening. She could still feel the weight of his head against her chest, his arms loosely around her waist, his breath warm and steady. She hadn't wanted to move, hadn't wanted to disturb the peaceful moment, but her heart had been pounding so hard she'd been afraid it would wake him up.
She'd barely managed to untangle herself from him without waking him, and then—oh god—she had accidentally pulled the blanket off him. That's when she realized Jason was shirtless, his back muscles flexing subtly as he shifted in his sleep.
Aubrey groaned, burying her face in the pillow. "I'm such an idiot."
Unable to shake the memory, Aubrey grabbed her phone and, without thinking, dialed Addie. Her sister was the only one she could talk to about this without completely dying of embarrassment—well, mostly.
The phone rang twice before Addie's cheerful voice came through. "Hey! What's up?"
Aubrey didn't even wait for formalities. "Oh my god, Addie, you won't believe what happened last night!"
She heard Addie chuckle on the other end. "Oh, this sounds good. What happened?"
Taking a deep breath, Aubrey dove right in. "Okay, so Jason spent the night here after a late patrol, right? And I woke up this morning, and he was... snuggled into my chest. Like, full-on cuddled against me, his head on my chest, arms around me, and I didn't know what to do!"
She could practically hear Addie grinning on the other end. "Oh no..."
"I was so embarrassed! I mean, I didn't want to wake him up, so I tried to slip out without him noticing, but in the process, the blanket came off him, and—" Aubrey paused, her face heating up again. "He was shirtless."
There was a long pause on the other end of the line, and then Addie's voice was teasing. "And...? It's not like you havent seen a shirtless guy before Aubs. We both know neither of us are inexperienced. " A cough was heard in the background. Aubrey let out a dramatic sigh, collapsing back into the couch. "And... wow. He's probably the hottest guy I've ever seen, Addie. His back muscles—ugh, they're ridiculous. He's all defined and strong, and the scars—don't get me started on the scars. They just add to it. Hes not like the men back home or that we are used too. It's like he's the perfect mix of rough and gorgeous. I almost climbed back into bed with him, but I knew I needed to get up and start cooking and feeding the cats, so I kinda just stood there for a couple minutes and then peeked in every once and while."
Addie laughed softly. "Sounds like someone's got it bad."
"I'm not done," Aubrey continued, feeling the need to get it all out. "So then, during breakfast, he snuck up behind me and hugged me, and I swear to god, Addie, his chest was... amazing. All firm and warm, and his abs—yeah, he's definitely got abs. It was like being pressed up against a living, breathing heating rock from back home. And don't get me started on how it felt to have his arms around me waist, just... UGHHHHHH. Why do his arms have to be so big? Gave me tingles and probably some other things i shouldn't be having but omg he was so close and hot. And we... we sang together."
Her voice softened as she remembered the moment. "It was so romantic, Addie. I got butterflies, like, real ones. We sang this song together, and I don't know, it just felt... right."
There was silence on the other end for a moment before Addie cleared her throat. "Aubrey... I'm really happy for you. I mean, it sounds like you two had a great morning, but..."
Aubrey frowned, sensing something was off. "But what?"
Addie hesitated for a split second. "But you should know... Dick was here when I picked up the phone. He's been listening the entire time."
Aubrey froze. "What?"
In the background, she heard Dick's familiar laughter, followed by Addie's voice trying to sound reassuring. "It's fine, really. No big deal—"
"WHAT?!" Aubrey shrieked, nearly dropping her phone. She could hear Dick cackling uncontrollably on the other end, and her face flushed a deep shade of red as she realized that not only had she just gushed about Jason to Addie, but Dick Grayson—Jason's adoptive brother—had heard every single word.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?!" Aubrey groaned, absolutely mortified.
Addie's laughter was soft but unapologetic. "I didn't want to interrupt your, uh, very detailed description of Jason's chest."
Aubrey buried her face in her hands. "I hate you."
Dick's voice, still filled with laughter, cut through the line. "Don't worry, Aubrey. Your secret's safe with me. And I gotta say, I didn't expect that level of detail, but hey, I'm impressed."
"Dick, I swear—" Aubrey started, but he was already laughing again.
Addie, ever the peacemaker, chimed in. "It's all good, really. I promise he won't tell anyone else. Right, Dick?"
"Cross my heart," Dick said, and Aubrey could practically see the smug grin on his face.
Aubrey sighed, slumping back into the couch. "You're both the worst."
Later that day, back at the Manor, Jason strolled in, feeling surprisingly good. Breakfast with Aubrey had been... perfect. Something about the simplicity of the morning had made him feel more at ease than he had in a long time. As he walked into the living room, he spotted Dick lounging on the couch, flipping through some files.
Jason sat down across from him, trying not to let the good mood show too much. "What's up?"
Dick glanced up, a smirk playing on his lips. "Nothing much. Just wondering how your night went."
Jason raised an eyebrow, suspicion flickering in his gaze. "What do you mean?"
"Oh, you know... just curious if you slept well," Dick said casually, the smirk growing.
Jason narrowed his eyes. "You know something, don't you?"
Dick chuckled, tossing the file aside. "Well, I know you spent the night with Aubrey."
Jason's heart skipped a beat. "How do you—"
Dick leaned forward, his grin widening. "Let's just say I overheard a little phone call between Aubrey and Addie earlier. Something about waking up with you snuggled into her chest?"
Jason's face flushed, and he leaned back, trying to play it cool. "What are you talking about?"
"Oh, you know... Aubrey talking about how 'gorgeous' you are, how much she liked your back muscles and scars, how nice your chest felt when you hugged her from behind..." Dick trailed off, enjoying the way Jason's embarrassment grew by the second. "Apparently you're the hottest guy she's ever seen. Oh and your arms around her waist gave her tingles and 'something else she probably shouldn't be having'." He finished the last part with air quotes and a shit eating grin.
Jason's mouth opened, then closed, and then he finally said, "She said I'm the hottest guy she's ever seen?"
Dick snorted. "Yeah, that's what you're taking away from this? Not the part where you were snuggling her all night?"
Jason, despite his flushed cheeks, smirked at his older brother. "Well, I mean... she's not wrong. How's it feel to know you're not the hotter brother anymore?"
Dick rolled his eyes, though his grin remained. "Of course you'd focus on that."
Jason leaned forward, crossing his arms smugly. "Sounds like I have quite an effect on her, doesn't it? You sure you're not jealous, Dick?"
Dick barked out a laugh. "Jealous? Not at all. But I've got to admit, it's nice to see you like this, man. Aubrey's good for you."
Jason's smirk softened, the playful banter giving way to something more genuine. "Yeah... she really is."
Dick's teasing smile remained, but his tone softened as well. "So... what's the plan? You gonna make a move or keep playing it cool? Have you two talked about labels or anything?"
Jason rubbed the back of his neck, thinking about how close they had gotten, about the way her touch had lingered on him that morning. "I don't know. I'm not used to this—having someone like her in my life. But... I think I'm ready."
Dick leaned back, arms crossed, still grinning. "Good. Just remember to be nice to her. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure she'll kick your ass."
Jason laughed, shaking his head. "Trust me, I know."
Inside, though, he couldn't help but feel a sense of relief. Knowing that Aubrey felt the same way he did, knowing that she thought about him the way he thought about her—it made everything feel a little more possible.
And if Dick wanted to tease him about it? Well, he could handle that. Because, at the end of the day, it didn't change the fact that he and Aubrey were finally finding their way to each other.
