Peace Treaty
Pick a land for our peace treaty,
write out the rules.
One
by
one.
Who's side?
Who's property?
Which lovelies do you prescribe?
I want the seaside, you want the dock.
Will the arguing ever stop?
Unleash the past year
- flowing like tasteless wine-
we built our armies
- they tired out -
let's end this war of nothing.
A smudge catches your eye
- unpleasant and untrue -
The rage starts to grow, I look for the error
- we wrote this together-
but I see nothing new.
That's when you call your general to attack.
- It's war -
I scramble to make amends.
No, I'm not perfect, I have my trials too.
But - I'm sorry-
I thought we had finally settled this...
What happened to the peace we signed
- not so long ago?
Started with a whisper,
our hearts and minds wide open.
Then you drew away- I wanted to stay-
A fort you cast around me.
Endless begging turned to endless fighting,
I was at the center of a battlefield.
Now all I see - grey clouds that follow me -
corrupted by shadows and masks.
Words now hieroglyphics on the page - your language against mine.
You're sick of repeating yourself?
Having to say what you never wanted to speak?
Well, I'm done being knocked down.
My words twisted into a knife I never held.
Hands now up in defeat.
But still, I won't be fragile -
like you want me to be,
I'll hold my own just like you.
Give you my tongue and all my pleads -
that too will be buried and burned.
Split the borders, fine.
Leave them jagged and bent.
Our people now have trust issues and hate stories.
Wondering - what's the real tale to tell?
But when the damage is done
-shots cease, smoke vanishes, and it's time to rebuild-
just remember the peace treaty we resigned and recreated.
Over
and
over.
And how I tried so hard to make it work with you.
