Paper Town

Chantel walked out of class and saw Peter and Roman by their lockers. The winter holidays were upon them and it was the last day of class. They had all thought Letha Godfrey was going to pop that baby last weekend but it was an false alarm and after staying at the White Tower for a day, she went back home.

"Hello sweetheart," Roman smiled as she approached the locker, cradling her bag.

She smiled back, "hey Rome," opening her locker and putting the essentials in her bag.

He pressed his lips, "I had a dream last night about Shelley, no..not a dream, I've been trying to do it on myself."

So Roman Godfrey is trying to mesmerise himself now? But how?

"Rome," she put a comforting hand on his forearm. "I know you miss Shell, I do too but you're pushing yourself over the limit."

"She needs me..." he said slowly.

His eyes sung stories with sad endings, she wanted to wrap him in a blanket and tell him, he'd be safe forever.

Ashely Valentine appeared out of the blue, "hey."

"Hey," Chantel turned and faced the girl.

The tall slim girl batted her eyelashes. "Can I have a word with Roman?"

Chantel nodded, "sure," and walked towards Peter who was drinking water from the water tap.

He lifted his head up and wiped his mouth from the back of his hand, "I wanted to talk to you."

"Yeah?" Chantel looked at him.

Peter looked at Roman at the distant who was talking to Ashley, then turned his attention back to Chantel. "Destiny told me something about Roman." He crossed his arms, "she saw a conversion of his fate line and heart line. Roman is gonna face the hardest choice of his life, and whoever's in his shadow is gonna share in the consequences."

"What does that even mean?" Chantel furrowed her brows.

He smacked his lips, "Roman is gonna face something big and whoever is with him is gonna face the same fate as him."

Chantel blinked, "do you know what that life changing event will be?"

"I don't know," he shook his head, "Destiny can't predict everything."

Chantel looked over her shoulder, Roman was smirking away: unaware of his fate. Enjoying Ashley's company.

She exhaled, "should we tell him?"

"Do you think we should?" Peter scratched his head.

"I don't know," she shrugged. Everything was just too complicated at the moment.

Then Roman gestured them to follow him.

They followed him towards their old spot, the school storage room. The last memory of them here, was pretty unpleasant: Peter telling Roman he's out from the Order of the Dragon and Roman flipping out on both of them. Roman pulled out two cigarettes and handed one to Peter, the boys lighted their cigarettes and began to smoke.

Chantel fanned herself with the scarf around her neck, she was feeling kind of warm for no valid reason. "Did you drag us here to smoke?" She asked.

"I want to see Destiny again," Roman inhaled deeply.

Peter glanced at Chantel, took a deep puff and said to Roman, "she's out of town at the moment."

Chantel didn't know if Peter was telling the truth or just lying to keep Roman away from heartache. But whatever it maybe, Peter was looking out for his friend in his own way.

Chantel got a ping on her phone, "I gotta go." She tapped on her phone screen.

"Where?" Roman looked at her.

"I've this thing with Gia," she told him.

Peter asked, "so you won't be joining us to go to Letha's?"

She murmured, "next time," she waved them goodbye as she jogged towards the parking lot where Gia was waiting for her. The brown girl was vaping as she leaned on her yellow car, tapping on her phone screen.

"Let's go," Chantel called as she got inside the car.

Gia nodded as she killed the e-cigarette. They were heading to the nail saloon, 'Los Angeles' by The Midnights was playing. The song that was played during the bonfire party at the start of summer vacation, the party where she introduced Peter and Letha. That very tragic party where she nearly got raped after getting totally hammered.

The beach was filled with teenagers from all over Pennsylvania, it was the most famous beach party after all. 'Los Angeles' by The Midnights was blasting on the speakers.

The cheerleaders were all seated in a long picnic table that fits all twelve of them perfectly. The table was filled with foods and drinks, Chantel didn't like to drink beer like the rest of the teenagers because she hadn't acquired the taste of the liquor so she sticked to the Jell-O shots.

She could see Roman Godfrey, the golden boy at a distant as usual being the center of attention and flirting with the ladies. "You're staring," Gia mentioned as she sat besides her, "what?" Chantel spluttered.

Gia nodded at the direction of Roman and the other girls. Chantel blinked, "I am not." But she totally was, she don't even know why she was trying to lie. Or maybe, she was lying to herself.

Then from the corner of her eye she caught Peter Rumancek loitering around with a beer bottle, looking lost. She rose up, "uh, I gotta go," and headed towards the gypsy. "You lost?" She asked.

Peter turned to her and beamed, "am found."

"I'm glad you're here," she told him, "you should've called."

"Uh, surprise!" He chuckled.

She smiled, "I sure am."

"You're not drinking?" He looked at her.

"I had around four Jell-O shots," she crossed her arms, "I'm good for now."

He took a sip of his beer, "those drinks they fuck you up, be careful."

She chuckled softly, "ok mom."

"Hey," Letha appeared putting an arm around Chantel, "whatcha doing?"

"Letha, Peter and Peter, Letha," Chantel introduced them. Peter offered his hand but the girl just nodded so the gypsy awkwardly put his hand back into his trouser pocket.

"Where's Roman?" Asked Letha as her eyes scanned the surroundings.

"I don't know," huffed Chantel. "Anyway, I need to use the loo, see you guys later?"

"Sure," Peter gave her a quick salute as Letha nodded with a smile.

Chantel made her way to the portable blue plastic toilets, where she saw Roman Godfrey disappearing into the woods with a blonde. Roman. Roman. Roman. She thought to herself irritably.

But as soon as she got out of the toilet, Brooke Bluebell had snatched her wrist and pulled her towards the other side of the beach where a dozen of them had gathered around a small bonfire.

There was this guy named Todd who was playing music from his Bluetooth speakers. Chantel had requested him to play 'Heather' by Conan Gray and as the song played Brooke offered her a cup of Long Island ice tea.

For an hour she'd been drinking and conversing with Todd, she don't even remember what the stupid conversation was even about as she was terribly hammered. Long Island ice tea has a varieties of alcohol in it, she should've known better.

The next minute she'd found herself in the woods with the stranger she just met, her head was spinning and her vision seemed so blurry. She just wanted to go home. She'd told him, that she wanted to leave but he was persistent. Her phone wasn't on her and she really didn't know what part of the woods they were on.

She could feel hot tears brimming up her eyes, as she was pressed against a tree. Then there was a commotion and a scream, she felt nauseated as hell. Flipping in and out of consciousness. Then, she found herself puking on the roadside as Roman hold back her hair helpfully from getting puke on it.

She felt so much better, she wiped her mouth with the handkerchief and leaned on the car. "What happened?" She asked him.

"What the fuck! Chantel," he began to scold her. "Why is your phone not on you and who the hell told you to stray away from the group?"

"I don't..." she didn't know what to say because she just couldn't remember.

"Fuck!" He grunted as he punched the hood of his car fumingly.

She flinched, "what's wrong?"

He looked at her surprised, "really?"

Brooke Bluebell appeared panting, "Chantel," the girl called as she pulled her into a hug, "you okay?"

Chantel nodded, "I am."

The cheerleader let her go and turned to Roman, "Todd's unconscious."

"What?" Chantel shuddered.

"He better be," Roman spat furiously.

"Rome," she looked at him. "What the hell did you do?"

"He bashed up that boy so badly, we had to call 911." Brooke told her.

Chantel shook her head in disbelief, nothing was making any sense. Roman was unresponsive, and angry as hell as he paced the road to and fro.

Brooke pulled Chantel towards the other side of the road, "Roman told us that Todd tried to force himself on you."

"What?" Chantel blinked surprised, the memory was so blurry but she remembered someone pinning her against a tree and she wanted to leave but he was being persistent.

Brooke looked at her, "you guys were hitting it off talking and giggling, I thought it was okay, I didn't know...I swear."

Chantel pressed her lips, "I don't know...I don't remember, I had one too many drinks."

Brooke gently caressed her face, "hey, it's okay."

"What about Todd, will he be okay?" Chantel asked concerned.

"Hopefully," Brooke murmured. "You should go home and get some rest."

Chantel nodded, "yeah."

Brooke guided her to the car and closed the door, "call me tomorrow?"

"Sure," Chantel gave her a small smile as soon as Brooke was out of sight, her eyes landed on Roman's bloodied knuckles.

"Shee-it!" She gasped, "what did you do Rome?"

"Saved your life," his jaws ticked.

"I'm..." she wobbled, "I'm sorry, I don't_"

Roman turned to her, his gaze soften. "Hey, hey, it's okay."

"What will happen to him now?" She asked worrisomely.

"He'll be okay," he responded easily. "If not we will just have to shower his family with bills."

That was the Godfrey way, always. But then an alarm rang in her, what if Susan Channing find out about tonight? Then she's as good as dead.

"My mom," she mouthed.

"I've taken care of it," he assured her.

"Thank you," she sniffed.

He put his hand on her's, "next time you're not leaving my sight."

"You're the one who disappeared into the woods," she frowned.

He let out a soft chuckle, "so you decided to disappear into the woods too?"

She shook her head and laughed, "jerk!"

"I'm sorry," he looked at her with his mesmerising eyes, "I'd never leave you alone, I promise."

She love the way he looks at her. Like he was about to talk to her or devour her and she's fine with either. Because those angelic eyes makes her all dizzy and weak.

Now their phones pinged simultaneously, Chantel checked her phone, "shee-it!" She cursed.

Ex Sheriff of Hemlock Grove Thomas Sworn died in his basement as a bomb he was building had exploded killing him, possibly intentionally.

Gia pulled up outside the nail salon, "what?" She shoved her phone on Gia's face as the brown girl mouth agape. "Fucking Shit!"

When they thought Hemlock Grove had finally found peace, another horrific tragedy? What the actual fuck was wrong with this town?
