Nam Soon gasped for air, realizing it had been only a dream. Those nightmares had been haunting her for some time now. Gang Nam Soon was going back to Korea after being separated from her birth parents at five. In the nightmare, someone kept calling her name in pain and agony, making her shiver as she recalled it.
Her Mongolian mother, believing it would guide her to her family, presented her with new clothes and a shiny rod that resembled gold. She packed her apron, which she earned after completing her medical education, to become a doctor. Saying goodbye to her mom and dad and taking a last glance at Papa's (the horse she was riding upon when her Mongolian parents found her) resting place, she set off on her journey.
The flight procedures were simple, and she found her seat '34 A' more smoothly than she expected. Everything was going as planned until the landing, which became complicated. She bravely opened the airplane door and leaped off to prevent a crash with the bus. Dust flew up around her shoes as she landed on her feet. The plane sped unbelievably fast, her hands burning as she fought to halt it. After a lot of screeching sounds, it stopped. Her efforts paid off, and she felt highly delighted.
However, she was unaware that a spectator had caught her in the act. Smiling to himself, he thought about the strength this girl holds without using intoxicating drugs that run in his veins as we speak.
She checked into her room. It looked vibrant and colorful, but the factor that made her feel at home was the painting she made with her mom for a drawing competition. Although she did not win, the drawing became a memory she cherishes even now. She hung it in front of her bed so that it was the first thing she saw as soon as she woke up. She unpacked her luggage and went to bed to update her parents about her arrival when she received a text message.
Text message: one new message from Gang Hee Sik:
'We checked the rod, and it is safe. You can take it back from our station tomorrow.'
Gang Hee Sik is the police officer she met during the security check at the airport. He wanted to check the rod for security, and I was not ready to give away the sole memory of my family that I have. Hee Sik tried to grab it from me, exerting all his strength, but could not. At last, I let go of the rod and he fell over a foreigner whose pockets were being examined. It was entertaining to watch him being shouted at by a Spanish person in the Korean language. All of us are dead, and Glory has taught him well.
She giggled, recalling the incident, then checked the message and went to sleep, as she had an interview the next day.
She passed the interview and would start working next week at Gangnam Hospital as a doctor. Following the interview, she visited the police station to collect her rod and requested the officers' help in locating her family. She told them everything she knew and was confident she would find them.
The following week flew by and it was already her first day at work. She got ready and prayed to God that she would find her family. Her parents wished her luck, and so did Kang Hee Sik. They had developed a strong bond and were now great friends.
She went to her cabin, met the Director of Medicine, and got familiar with her workspace. She loves helping people, and that was the main reason she got into this field.
'Doing good deeds will help my Nam Soona stay healthy, and God might help me meet her.' She fell from her chair as a woman's voice rang in her head.
'It's the same voice,' she whispered to herself as her heart suddenly had a sharp pain and she gasped to breathe. It felt as if someone was choking her. That is the same voice she keeps hearing in her dreams. The voice is so affectionate, as if she is her moth...she did not even complete the sentence because the idea of her mother being in agony did not settle well with her.
"What are you doing on the floor? Are you okay?" Her colleague Lily gave her a glass of water. She drank slowly, still feeling the after-effects of what had just happened.
"I'm okay. I haven't had breakfast yet," Nam Soon lied and headed back to work after promising Lily that she would have a heavy lunch.
At night, she celebrated her first day of work with a team dinner and went to bed, but she couldn't stop thinking about who the lady was.
The next day:
"Come to me soon, Nam Soona," her eyes opened as if someone jolted her awake. Her phone rang. She was extremely shocked to pick up the call as if some unseen force was pinning her down. She took her time before getting up and paced her breathing. By the time she was ready to pick up the call, the ringing stopped. She called the number again, but it was unreachable. Her waking up to the scream and the timing of the incoming call did not seem like a coincidence to her. As if there was a string making the connections between the two, but with such a loose knot that it was hard to make out if there was even a knot or not. If there was a connection or not.
She got ready for work after wearing the sweater her Mongolian mom knitted for her. After what happened today, she knew she needed some comfort that brought warmth.
After work, she was heading home when she saw a beautiful woman in a red coat and black boots going inside a cozy cafe named "Baked with Love," which made her want coffee. She entered the cafe, enjoyed her coffee with almond cookies, and headed home. She spent the weekend watching K-dramas and studying.
The next week was peaceful because, for a long time in a while, she did not have any nightmares. She headed to the police station because they said they had some reports on her mother. They gave her a contact number and an address where they think her mother lives. She contacted the number after having an iced Americano, which might help with the anxiety that she was getting. She stopped in front of the cafe to pick up a call.
"Nam Soona," the voice said as she watched a woman inside the cafe mouth the identical words.
