Chapter 2: Half Payed
Luna stared at the flames for a couple seconds, her brain not processing what was happening.
My house is on fire.
Luna bolted up the stairs, screaming for everyone to wake up.
Race stumbled out into the hall, still half-asleep.
"Looney? What's going on?" He asked.
"Kitchen...fire...get...out," Luna got out, heaving for air after her frantic dash.
Race's eyes widened.
By now, Jane and Les, along with Joan and Grace were out in the hall.
Race ran to the room where Paul and Liz were sleeping and came out with the small children, Paul in front of him and Liz in his arms. Luna quickly shepherded everyone out, Jane the only one behind her.
When everyone had made in out, Luna started down the stairs, Jane following close behind.
In the time it had taken for the two sisters to get down, the fire had begun to weaken the walls and was creeping towards the ceiling.
Luna began to run, sprinting as fast as she could in bare feet.
A horrible creaking sound came from above and behind Luna and she half-turned. A large beam was falling. Luna picked up speed, and heard the beam crash to the floor.
The Redheaded woman turned, at the door, when she saw something that was seared into her mind forever.
Jane was under the beam.
Luna screamed, not hearing her own call of distress.
Jane was half under the beam, stomach down. The rafter had slammed into her back, and was over her legs and lower back.
Luna felt someone grab her arm and yank her out the door. She began to hit whoever was holding her until she realized it was Race.
She sobbed.
Behind her her home was in flames, and her sister was dead.
-
Luna watched numbly as the fire was finally put out.
She could hear Race whispering words in her ear, words she didn't comprehend.
She felt a paper hit her lap and she looked down.
Joan had tossed a envelope into her lap, the front inscribed with,
"Luna Andromeda Fett Higgins."
Luna used her thumbnail to open the back and pulled out the piece of paper within.
It read,
"Your debt in half payed. We warned you."
Luna suddenly stood, Race jumping backwards to avoid getting hit.
Luna ran towards the still smoking ruin that had been her home.
On a grey wall that had escaped the fire for the most part, a small message was inscribed.
"Cassy Fett and Jane Jacobs have payed."
