"I will never break that promise until Rin is strong enough to protect himself."
As Rin continued his verbal attack on Yukio, you stayed quiet in your seat. Despite you telling Rin to calm down, it seems his confusion overwrote his rationality... like always. There was no point in telling him to sit down at that point. It got so bad that Yukio had to ask everyone to wait in the hall.
"I'm not moving my ass anywhere," you said, crossing your arms. When the class was emptied, Yukio ripped his arm from Rin's grasp.
"Well? What is it you wanted to ask me?" He asked.
"Drop the clueless act! Tell me what's going on!" Rin exclaimed, "No one ever told me about any of this!"
"Nor I," you said flatly.
"It looks like you'd better explain, then," Mephisto said. Yukio let out a sigh and you narrowed your eyes at him.
"Just as I said before, I became an exorcist two years ago," he began, "I started my training at seven. After dad suggested it..."
"The old man?" Rin repeated, but in his own words. You sunk back into your seat.
"So you knew of the old man's work, even back then?"
"Yes," Yukio replied, "You were the only one who didn't know, Rin." Rin's eyes widened as he snapped his gaze to you.
"You knew?!" He exclaimed. It was hard to keep his stare, but you did.
"... I did," you replied quietly. His expression was more shock than anything.
"In any case, it was from you, a demon, that I received my Temptaint at birth," Yukio said, "For as long as I can remember, I've been able to see demons..."
"No way..." Rin breathed. You finally looked away from the brothers, closing your eyes instead.
"Why, Yukio? Why didn't you say anything to me till today?" He asked, grabbing Yukio by the shoulders. "I'm asking you why you didn't tell me!"
"Let go of me," Yukio said, pulling away from him.
"Yukio!" Rin persisted, knocking into him. Yukio's hand brushed against the vial of rotten blood. It shattered, splashing the blood onto the floor. Immediately, the putrid smell carried around the room.
"It stinks!" Rin said, holding his fist to his nose. You suddenly jumped out of your seat and to the front right before the pipes above burst. Steam cloaked the room in a thin sheet of fog. You looked around, sensing the hobgoblins, but they haven't revealed themselves yet. You waited, hand on your sword. The hobgoblins screeched as they flew to Rin. You jumped in front of him automatically, but Yukio shot the life out of them first. You looked over and saw him weilding a gun.
"Yukio!" Rin exclaimed in shock.
"Those are hobgoblins," he said.
"Knew that..." You muttered.
"Not only are they numerous, but now we've made them vicious." He put the gun down. "I'll get rid of them, so go wait outside, Rin, Y/n."
"I'm not done yet!" Rin yelled over him. A slew of hobgoblins appeared. Yukio shot all of them down before they could reach you.
"Listen, Yukio," Rin said, "Just what did you think of me all this time?"
"Think of you?" Yukio repeated. More of the low level demons appeared. "That should be obvious." He shot them from behind his back.
"Knowing that you were a demon, I thought of you as a threat." He turned to look at Rin. You furrowed your brows at him, not liking what was coming out of his mouth.
"Needless to say, I still do." Rin was even more shocked than you, but Yukio just kept shooting at the hobgoblins.
"You're an idiot, Rin," he said, "Why did you ever insist on becoming an exorcist? For revenge? Or was that your way of trying to atone for father's death?"
"Yukio, enough," you said, stepping in front of Rin. "You know just as well as I do that what happened was not his fault." You glared at him, something you'd never thought you'd do. The glowing of three pairs of eyes appeared until three large hobgoblins appeared behind Yukio.
"If you really feel that way..." Yukio trailed off before turning and shooting them. "... then you should just turn yourself in to the Knights of the True Cross... or better yet, die."
"Over my dead fucking body!" You finally yelled. Your sword was free from its protective cloth.
"Y/n...!" Rin exclaimed, surprised to see you with the sword free of one of its layers.
"I care about both of you equally, but if you so much as think about attacking or exposing him, you, along with the Order, will fall."
"Your protectiveness is admirable, but foolish," he said.
"Don't tell me what's foolish or not!" Your eyes flashed red. "The foolish one here is you if you think I'd allow anyone to take Rin." A hand was placed on your shoulder gently. You turned to see Rin shake his head lightly at you. You calmed yourself.
"You don't really think it was my fault the old man died?" He asked him.
"Are you telling me it wasn't?" Yukio stood straighter. "Dad protected you all your life. I saw that myself, firsthand. Since dad was the only person in the world who could resist being possessed by Satan, Satan was constantly targeting him!"
You let your shoulders drop in a quiet sigh.
"And for fifteen years he deflected him with sheer willpower! Dad was the most powerful exorcist of them all!" He shot the hobgoblin that peeked its head out. "Unless he'd sustained some kind of emotional damage..." He killed more of the damn low level demons.
"... there's no way he'd let Satan in like that... I'll bet you said something to dad, didn't you?"
It seemed Rin finally realized it. You knew from the beginning.
"If dad had any weaknesses... I'd say..." He reloaded his guns, then pointed it at Rin. "It was you, Rin. It was you who killed dad, Rin!" You threw your sword in front of Rin. If Yukio pulled the trigger, you'd react, and you wouldn't hold back.
"Why are you still protecting him?" Yukio asked, "Dad was like a father-figure to you. Aren't you angry that he's dead?"
"Of course I am!" You replied, "But don't use whatever feelings I have against me to try to askew my judgement. I made a promise to Shiro and I will never break that promise until Rin is strong enough to protect himself." Yukio narrowed his eyes at you, but didn't argue back.
"Listen... you're right about me being an idiot," Rin said, "So say whatever you want... I don't care... but..." Rin clenched his fist. His entire form lit up in a brilliant blue. You quickly jumped away from him, not wanting his flames to activate yours.
"I'm your brother. Don't you dare point those guns at me! We're brothers, remember?!"
The force that emitted from him shook the entire room. Yukio was almost knocked off his feet and you covered your face with your arms. A giant hobgoblin appeared at the spike of energy. Rin ran over to his desk and grabbed the Kurikara. Yukio regained his footing and pointed the gun at him. You pointed the blade at him. Yukio saw this and aimed his other gun straight at you. You didn't activate your flames, though.
"I did not kill the old man!" Rin affirmed, slowly unsheathing his own sword. "If shooting me will give you satisfaction..." He drew the sword, fully unleashing his flames.
"... then let's see you do it!"
Your eyes went back at Yukio when he let out a gasp. You never lowered your sword.
"Shoot me!" Rin ran forward, towards Yukio. He didn't shoot. Rin ran past him and jumped, destroying the absolute monster of a hobgoblin that was behind Yukio. When the thing was destroyed, Rin sheathed Kurikara. You also sheathed yours. His blue flames went away.
"Don't insult me, man. I won't fight my own brother."
Yukio stared at him for a moment before slowly turning around.
"... so what were dad's final moments like?"
"... he was awesome. He died trying to protect me till the end. See, the reason I decided to become an exorcist... it had nothing to do with revenge, or anything complicated like that. It's just that I wanted to become stronger. I can't take anyone else dying because of me!"
You let out a sigh when things calmed down.
'Geez... my heart can't handle this...'
Ja ne!
