The three of you ran around the corner to the monastery. Two of the exorcists were waiting outside. Shiro had called them before to inform them of the situation.
"Welcome home," one greeted.
"How did it go?" Shiro asked, swerving into the yard. You and Rin followed close behind him.
"I've purged all of the Coal Tars," the one replied. The gate closed behind you. "And I've triple-reinforced the spiritual barrier surrounding the monastery."
"Double it again. It surely won't hold until morning," Shiro ordered, opening the door and barging in. "We are being attacked by kinsmen of Astaroth. Douse the sewers with triple-C density holy water. Not a single one must be allowed to infiltrate!" You all walked down the center aisle while other exorcists were quick at work.
"Yes, Father!"
Shiro suddenly turned to you.
"Y/n, help them out. Do not let a single demon through."
You nodded at him.
"Of course." You walked away from him and Rin to assist the others. You noticed Shiro leading the teenager to the same hidden room you were in earlier that day.
"Miss Y/n, quick—help me with the circles—" The lot of you were blown away from smoke and dust. A loud crashing made the floor tremble below you. The putrid smell invaded your nostrils immediately. A large truck had plowed its way through the front entrance. At that moment, Rin and Shiro re-emerged from underground.
"I have come for you, my young prince." Fungi and ghouls sauntered and grew all around you. Astaroth was among them. "Let us return home to Gehenna together!" At that moment, his arm stretched—abnormally so. His hand gripped Rin's ankle and pulled him to the floor. Eyes glinting, you removed your sword from its cloth and unsheathed it. Your movements were blurry, even to the trained eye, but by the time you stopped moving, your blade was re-sheathed and Astaroth was screaming in pain.
You had cut off his arm.
It would grow back, of course, but it was still painful.
With an animalistic growl, the King of Rot directed his malicious attention to you.
"You bitch!" His yell echoed through the monastery. The exorcists around you shuddered, but stood strong.
"Come at me, bitch!" You ran forward. The ghouls lunged. You brought out your sword and slashed them both in half. They disappeared in black mist. Astaroth ran forward and attempted hand-to-hand combat. Keyword: attempted. Your blade grazing his cheek was enough to send him back. He crashed into the floor with a groan. You backed away when the fungi grew larger.
"Protect Rin!" Shiro exclaimed. You held the blade close to your face as the others began to fight. You slowly slid your forefinger and middle finger down the sleek blade.
"Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy!" The silver shone brightly. You flipped it in your grasp before clutching it over your shoulder. Swinging it in a wide side-arc, you managed to halve Astaroth's numbers.
"You damn exorcist!" Now his kinsmen were targeting you. Fungi and mushrooms are growing at an alarming rate around you.
"Y/n!" You could hear Shiro yell. Your gaze darkened at all of them, ringlets of red appearing in your eyes.
"Lord of the Dreams that Terrify, Sword of Cold and Darkness. Free yourself from Heaven's bonds, become one with my power, one with my body. Let us walk the path of destruction together. Power that can destroy even the souls of gods... Leviathan!" The once sleek, silver blade now darkened into an inky black.
"Disappear!" You swung the sword again. This strike was bigger, stronger, quicker. Most of the small, low-level demons were wiped out with that single attack. Looking over your shoulder, you failed to notice your fellow exorcists were knocked out.
'What?! When did that happen?'
"I've had it with you now!"
You looked back to Astaroth. With a loud grunt, his body grew larger—more goat-like. He towered over you, skin now a dull brown.
"I'm going to rip out the guts of every last one of you!" His two-toned voice threatened. A pitchfork was thrown into his shoulder, sending him to the ground. You looked behind yourself to see Rin who was no longer in the hidden room. The Kurikara was in his grasp.
"I said we're not done talking yet, you old fart!" He said.
"Young prince..." Astaroth groaned from the ground. "Wh-what on earth..." You moved across the monastery to in front of Rin, holding your sword out protectively. It returned back to its original appearance. Shiro stood on top of the demon and proceeded to exorcise him. The black mist shot out of him with a scream. His body also returned back to normal, though he was unconscious. With a sigh, you sheathed your sword and turned around.
"What are you doing?!" You exclaimed, now disregarding the others. A quick look of shock flashed across Rin's face.
"What are you talking about?" He shot back, "I couldn't just leave when you were in danger!"
"I'm not the one in danger right now," you hissed, "You have to leave. Otherwise, this would be for nothing!"
"Don't ever forget that it's you the demons are after!" Shiro spoke from the middle.
"Is that so?" Rin inquired, expression dropping. "What you're saying is that everything will be fine as long as I'm history."
"Rin," you growled.
"Fine, I'll be happy to bounce." He turned. "You'd feel better if I do, right?" He began to walk away from you. Before you could move, Shiro crossed the distance and grabbed his shoulder.
"Rin!"
"Let go of me!" He pushed out of his grip. "You just kicked me out yourself!" You stayed back and watched the scene unfold. As much as you hated it, there was no place for you to intervene. This was between him and Shiro, father and son.
"I know I'm the screwed up son, anyways..."
The enormous amount of energy and self control it took for you to not pummel him into the floor was god-like.
"No, actually, we're not even related. Strangers, right?"
Okay, now you were actually about to pummel him.
"Rin!"
"Admit it, why don't you? You're just sick of pretending to be my family! Or is it against your religion to say something like that? Or wait, is it because you just want to play the perfect dad one last time?"
You were definitely no saint, but the absolute size of your mouth when your jaw dropped was amazing.
"Give me a break! You're not my father—you're nobody to me! Don't ever let me see you trying to act like my father again!"
You felt it right then. A crack. A hole in Shiro's spiritual defense. You can't explain it, but it made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
In that moment, Shiro whipped his hand across Rin's cheek. Your eyes widened in shock.
"It will be morning soon," Shiro said quietly, "Hurry, go get your things." There was a moment of silence.
"... okay," Rin conceded. He turned and walked towards the back of the monastery.
"Shiro," you said carefully, noticing him look down at the palm of his hand. Your blood curdled. Shiro fell to his knees with a gasp.
"Father Fujimoto!"
"Stay away! Don't come near me!"
You took a step back, mouth quivering. You felt it—the evil brewing inside of him. You cursed yourself for being able to sense it. The lights inside blew out, leaving you in darkness. You scrambled to put your sword away.
"Wh-what's going on?" Rin asked. You zoomed over to him, and forced him to step back. Laughter came from Shiro, but it wasn't his own. This was darker, sinister—demonic.
You pushed Rin back even farther, even though your own legs were shaking.
"At long last... I've claimed it as my own! This body!"
"Hey!" Rin called, trying to run past you, but you gripped his wrist and held him against you. Shiro's head looked up. Lips pulling back to reveal sharpened teeth.
"We meet at last, my son!"
Your eyes widened.
"Oh, but I jest!" Blue flames exploded from his body as he stood, manic laughter leaving him.
"What's wrong with you, old man?!" Rin cried.
"He's been possessed, Rin!" You exclaimed, "Satan has taken over his body!"
"Huh?!"
You flinched, the right side of your skull pounding away inside. You lifted a hand and place it on your head, trying your best to focus on the blue inferno in front of you.
Ja ne!
