High school and Best friends

Dedicated to mintys- for the beautiful cover and support.

"Oh yes, the past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it." - The Lion King

•••

'She wanted to be everything. The wind that blows on your face making you feel that there is hope out there, the stars that shine in the night sky like million of tiny diamonds for you to wish upon, the rain, those tiny crystals that make those scars invisible, heal you for a while when they touch your skin. She wanted to be the entire universe.

But, at the same time, she wanted to be nothing. A black hole I nothingness, sucking everything into oblivion.

Yet, she knew that she could not be anything. She would just remain the weird girl who wanted to be the stars, the moon and the black hole, all at once.'

I put down my pen and tilted my head a little as I stared at the words I'd just written in my black diary.

What the hell did I just write. I thought as I sighed and traced a finger along the black, cursive letters. As I pondered over the black ink that was seemingly etched into my eyes, the door of my room opened with a loud bang!

I whipped around to look over at my door and during this simple process, lost my holding on the edge of the bed, toppling over to the ground.

Hissing in pain, I cried out, "The fudge Autumn!" I pulled my legs underneath me while giving my best friend a death glare that would have made Hades run for his money.

"Well. Good morning to you too. Glad to know you woke up dreaming of rainbows and unicorns." Came the sarcastic reply of Autumn as she flipped her Auburn hair and plopped herself on my bed.

"Ha. Ha. Ha." I said. Rolling my eyes at her and snatching my diary out of her perfectly manicured hands.

"Hey!" She said frowning.

"Don't make yourself so much at home, homie." I smirked at my poor attempt at pun.

"That was pathetic. Now you have exactly ten minutes before I literally shove your-"

"Ok! I get it! Language A!" I said. Ahem, my friend has a very colourful Language.

"By the way, I am picking your outfit today." She said taking her 5'9 frame to my 5'4 closet.

I looked at her white flowery sundress and shrugged. "As long as you don't destroy my room."

You see, Autumn Levy the young, tall, curvy, beautiful girl with a bright, cheery outlook at life who everyone thought would be the next Gigi Hadid actually aspired to be a fashion designer and this would not be the first time I would come out of a wash to find my room as if a hurricane had blown through it. Clothes and Autumn? Hundred percent havoc, which is exactly what happened when I came into my room ten minutes later.

"I told her not to destroy my room." I muttered, wishing a nice death for her. After all a torturous death would be too much, for she is my best friend.

As I finished struggling into the black pants which were a bit too tight and the brown crop top which was a bit too short, I looked at myself in the mirror. Lazy brown hair tied up into a knot, freckles covering the lower part of the eyes and no make up. Check. As I stepped into my sneakers there came a knock at my door.

I froze. Autumn never knocked. Just one person in this house ever knocked on my door before coming in.

"What do you want mother?" I asked as I turned around to be greeted by the petite, blonde lady standing on the doorway with a paper bag in her hands.

"Hey Wist." I flinched. No one called me 'Wist' now.

"I- I got you cookies darling." Mother said stepping inside.

Instinctively I took a step back. I could see her smile drop. But she did a good act of holding on to it.

"Choco chip cookies. You used to love them remember?"

"Yeah, two years ago." I replied with a clipped tone.

She sighed. "Wist-"

"Don't. Don't call me that." I said, as I closed my eyes to get her picture out of my mind.

"Ok, Wisteria. I am trying here. You have to help me out here too. Just give me some more time." She said covering the distance between us in two large steps and putting a hand on my shoulder.

I moved away. "How much more? I gave you two years Mom."

With that I took my bag and went out of my room.

•••

"Ugh! Come out of it already!" Screamed Autumn as she hit the brakes. I would have flown out of the window if not for the safety belt. Thank God for them. "You have been sitting over there for the past fifteen minutes like a dead seal. Did you even here a single word I have been saying?" She asked as she finally stopped flaying her hands around.

"Wha- why a dead seal?" I asked.

"Of course! Of the whole lecture I just gave, you just caught that part! Why am I friends with you again?" Autumn continued getting out of her dirty-but-loving-it Skoda. Her words of course.

"Because someone needs to be there to make sure you don't jump off a building with the amount of energy you always have?" I answered, getting out of her car as well.

I took a moment to take in the red bricked building sorrounding us. Shermer High. My beloved school. Where like every high school their was a vicious social ladder. The kids who called themselves 'The Elites' being the front face of the crowd. Actually the Elite just consisted of just six kids. Filthy rich, beautiful and mean. You guessed it.

Sometime I was that too.

They somehow managed to keep the entire attention of Shermer onto themselves. Kids, especially freshmen, worshipped the tiles they walked on. Each week they had a new 'pet' with them, promising that poor kid popularity and in turn making the kid do their dirty work and I don't just mean homework.

Sometime they did that for me too.

Taking in a huge gulp of air I muttered, "Just one more year to go." Then, I walked in.

"Wisteria!" Shouted Autumn. We were near our lockers which, thankfully, where next to each other.

"Yes ma'am." I said mockingly.

"Do you realise that half of our senior year is almost over?" She asked me folding her hands and leaning on to her locker.

"Actually classes started last week" I reminded her taking out my maths book.

I dropped it as soon as I had it in my hands, right onto my feet too, thanks to Autumn's sudden urge to slam her hand on my locker. I glared at her as I bent down to pick up the book.

"A week is already over. That's like an eternity in senior year! Wisteria you have to start living-"

"Start going out more, dressing up more and getting a boyfriend first of all." I completed for her. "Have been hearing you say this since last semester." I said as I started walking towards class.

"Well, it's time you apply that in real life Chumpy." Autumn continued calling me by the 'special' name she had for me, for, and I qoute, 'you so are a chump chumpy.'

In my defence, I am not at all foolish. I am quite smart actually, no bragging at all. I am not a nerd exactly. For one I don't wear glasses. The first and foremost thing nerds should have according to the 'Stereotypical Book Of Guidelines For Nerds'. Also I am not socially awkward. I used to quite friendly once. Before I decided people were just not worth your time and effort.

But yes, I had been decieved before. So that made me feel quite a bit like a chump. But that word could have easily described the old Wist, not the new Wisteria. I had been told before that I trusted people too easily. Maybe that was true. So, the only remedy to this problem was not to mingle with people at all.

One thing I had learned, and listen carefully freshmen - You be invisible and people leave you to your own devices. Most of the time.

I was thinking of a good retort to Autumn's comment when I saw Auna Larington heading towards us in all her six inch Prada glory. She was, of course, escorted by Evy Merryweather. Both of them were dressed as if they had come to a party not high school. Typical.

"Hey Autumn!" Said Auna coming to us and flashing a million dollar smile to Autumn.

"Uh, hey Auna." Replied Autumn not looking her into her dark eyes. Her eyes were known to be enchanting, anyone looking into them had not yet been able to resist them.

"Long time no see darling." Auna continued, leaning forward to hug Autumn.

Autumn looked at me once before hugging her back. I stuffed my hands into my pocket and looked the other way.

"Well, you do know about the party tonight at my place right? You totally have to come." Evy said, flipping her dyed strawberry blonde hair back.

"Umm, I don't know if I can..." Autumn replied, glancing at me.

"Oh, did I mention Will will also be there at the party?" Auna added, twirling a piece of hair and looking at Autumn through her ebony coated eyelashes.

At the name of Will, Autumn perked up. Since freshman year, from the moment Autumn had set eyes on William Kauffman, she had been in 'love'. Or so she claimed. The entire school's female population was in love with Will so that wasn't new. But Auna knowing about Autumn's crush on Will? That was new.

Auna kept feeding shit to Autumn about the party for the next two minutes. After the first one minute, I tuned out. I was invisible to them. Nothing new. But the way Evy stared me down it would seem we had been nemesis before even the goddess Nemesis had been born.

Just then the football team passed by and there wearing his #1 jersey, football in hand, laughing along with the rest of the guys was William. His raven hair was astray and his eyes twinkled as he looked at our direction and said, "hey girls!" And then, looking at Autumn, "hey there" with a nod and a smirk.

Now I would be hearing about this the whole week.

After they passed and after Autumn at last stopped looking backwards in Will's direction, she turned towards Auna and asked "what time do we have to be there again?"

As I stared at her wide eyed Auna smirked and looking at my direction replied, "Anytime would be fine darling."

"I am sorry Chumpy."

For the millionth time in the past ten minutes apologized Autumn. I ignored her, also for the millionth time. We were in the maths class and I was supposed to be concentrating on the algebra Mr. Porter was teaching us, but I couldn't stop fuming.

Autumn knew I never went to parties. Not since sophomore year. But she still agreed to go because of Will. I mean choosing crush over best friend? Autumn deserved to beg some more.

"I am really sorry Wisteria, but you saw Will didn't you? Maybe I do have a shot with him and I would never know until I tried right? This is the only chance I see that I have to let Will notice me. Don't you want your best friend to be happy now?" She said, poking me in the cheek with a pencil.

Swiping the pencil away, I put a finger on my lips while glaring at Autumn. As tried to channel my concentration back on the multiple x's and y's on the board, the door of the classroom opened. All heads turned towards the door.

I sucked in a breath. There standing under the rusted door frame was the most beautiful guy I had ever seen. He could have been an Abercrombie and Fitch model and I wouldn't have doubted it one bit. My eyes travelled down his tall, lean body. From his dirty blonde hair through which he was running a finger to his muddy Nike's. Tan body, messy hair, crooked smirk. Perfect.

He came in towards Mr Porter and shook his hand, "Sir, Reece Gray." He said with a deep voice.

Not a complete bad boy then. Score.

"Welcome Mr Porter, first day? Have a seat." Said Mr Porter with a grin, delighted to have some respect for once in this class. He ushered Hot new guy to a seat behind mine and Autumn, next to Evan Merryweather, who was scrutinizing Hot new guy with those stormy grey of his eyes.

I looked at Autumn, who was grinning at me like a silly middle school girl. I grinned back. I guess it's time for some BFF Fangirling moment.

I looked back at Hot new guy. He looked up from his books and his eyes found mine. Green. That raging yet passionate green that the ocean turns before a storm. That calming yet lively green of forests after rains. It was that green of his eyes that actually caught me, before I had could even swoon over those eyes, they reminded me of her. And I didn't want to be reminded of her right now.

I looked back down at my notes. But I could feel his eyes on me for a long time after that.

•••

I watched as Regina Meyer sashayed over to the cafeteria line, to where the Hot new guy stood. He has a name Wisteria. I reminded myself.

The crowd parted like the red sea for her. The guys shamelessly checked her out as she made her way towards Ho- Reece. That was until Taylor McCoy came into the picture and put a hand protectively on her waist. Taylor and Regina the other two Elites of Shermer high had been the 'it' couple since freshman year. Both families rich and both fathers business partners. What else would you expect?

Reece stood in the line, bobbing his head to some music from his headphones, oblivious to the sudden hush in the cafeteria. No one spoke when the Elite spoke to the non-Elites. An unspoken rule, for they only spoke with Non-Elites either when they wanted to embarrass them or befriend one of them- which had never happened, until now. The last ones to join the Elite had been Evy and Evan, the twins, who couldn't be more opposite, both had transferred last semester here.

The crowd watched in silence as Regina put a hand on Reece's shoulder, saying a "Hey there" in such a sickly sweet voice that toffees would have been jelous.

Reece glanced back at at the two of them, removing his earphones. He gave Regina that crooked smirk and did a half hug with Taylor. I held my breath as Regina spoke.

"So, I get that you are new here?" She started twirling a strand of her strawberry blonde hair. "Wanna join us at our table?" She continued giving him an infectious smile.

Reece glanced at the centre of the cafeteria, where the rest of the Elite sat. Auna, Will and the twins, Evy and Evan. Then looking back at Regina he grinned and nodded.

"Sure." He said.

Regina eyes glinted with that hunger of a predator when he finds its prey. It was pretty common knowledge that even though she was Taylor's girlfriend, she had slept with half of the male population of Shermer high. Reece was definitely next on her list.

As Reece went to sit with the Elite. My heart sank. I didnt know why I had thought That he could be different. That he would say no, just like Autumn had. But of course, I was just delusinising.

I turned back to Autumn sighing.

"Expected" she said wolfing down the burger she had got from home. I looked at her thin frame, how she managed to remain slim after eating that much god knows but that was one of the reasons why I loved her. She was original. She didn't wear a facade over herself displaying herself as someone she was not.

"Yeah, expected." I agreed, glancing at him once more. Auna had already seated herself on his lap, marking her territory. He was just like the rest. Part of the Elite now.

I decided right then that I wanted nothing to do with this guy.

Reece Grey.

Little did I know at that time how wrong I was.

Attention! Attention! Attention!

New story on its way.

Heya you lovely people. Congratulations! You just made it through the first Chapter of Fixing Her. Just about...I don't know how many more chapters to go yet. Hope you liked the beginning, do tell me if I can improve somewhere or about any grammatical errors.

Comments are welcome. Just not the hate ones. XD

Cool Kids by Echosmith on the sidebar. I think it relates to how everyone wants to be part of The Elite. Popularity, who doesn't want it. Being a cool kid is a feeling like no other and once you get a taste of it you want it. At any cost.

That's part of what the story is about. But enough with the deep stuff. NOTICED THE SCHOOL'S NAME?

The Breakfast Club. One of my favourite movies of all times. That's where the name of the school comes from. I love that movie! Go watch that movie right now! But first, don't forget to vote, comment and share!
