| Chapter Zero: Prologue
FIXED. PROLOGUE.
♢ ♢ ♢
HENRIETTA, VIRGINIA WAS an interesting place to say the least; it was very picturesque, but there was something so eerily beautiful about it. Or maybe it was just the specific place Maura Sargent lived in. Either way, Maura found herself easily drawn to the quiet town and was determined to stay.
Her daughter, however, was not.
From a young age, Maura knew Blue Sargent hated Henrietta and the very few amount of interesting people in it. Maura saw how bored she always was and how the only thing she would ever do was sit by a tree (Blue's favorite tree; the one her called 'hers' and would look at travel brochures her dad, Artemus, would bring home specifically for her. At dinner, she would always point out how small her world felt when she knew it could be bigger. Maura admired her daughter's open-mind, but hated it at the same time. She wished that Blue would appreciate the serenity and love she felt for the small town she she called hers.
The most heartbreaking news Maura ever heard was when Blue chose to leave Henrietta travel with Artemus during the divorce. Persephone and Orla had comforted Maura for weeks, and even Blue reassured her mother that even if she chose Artemus, she still loved her. But the whole reason that their bond shattered (their somewhat small one, at that) was all because she chose Artemus. Maura chose to never think that thought again, because what if Blue chose her? She didn't want to be hypocritical because Artemus would've probably been heartbroken like her.
Sure, Blue still visited in the summer, but it wasn't the same. Maura brought her places she thought she would enjoy, but Blue would end up comparing it to other places. Like that time she compared the forest to the one she went hiking in when she was in Upstate, New York. And when she isn't out and comparing — and essentially breaking Maura's heart with it — she was in her room or sitting under the tree in the years ("It's one of the only things I miss here — but you're number one of course," Maura remembered Blue say the first summer she visited).
Maura hated how much she missed out on Blue's life and she hated how she couldn't talk about it with her with because their relationship mostly consisted of sarcastic comments (but thank God Blue actually understood her humor).
But soon it was about to change ... well, hopefully.
This time, Blue wasn't only going to stay for the summer, but for the entire year.
Maura had already enrolled her into the local high school and had barely slept at all the two days before Blue arrived out of excitement and nerves. She had made sure to clean Blue's old bedroom, which was surprising. Normally, Maura wouldn't really do anything besides sit on her small bed and look at the polaroids of her and her dad and places they're visited together. Then other times, she refused to go in there at all because it made her sad.
It was obvious to Maura that there was an awkwardness and a restrain in the relationship she had with her daughter. She only hoped that Blue didn't feel the same way; the last thing Maura would want was to have Blue feel as if she didn't belong or wasn't welcomed in 300 Fox Way because she always was and will continue to always will be.
And as Maura changed the sheets and dusted Blue's shelves to prepare for her to arrive, she wished for the best.
Maybe this would be the year their relationship would be fixed.
