Chapter 5 - It Was Time
It was time for me to attend college, unfortunately. I have registered for my course online, that course being psychology, and I was now getting ready to leave the house.
The past few days have been uneventful; I've been chilling at home, watching a lot of tv and spending some time with my aunt, uncle and cousin. I haven't been really opening up to them or anything, but they were really persistent on getting to know me. Dylan has tried to get me out of the house to meet his friends a few times but I've always said no. I don't want to make friends, especially knowing that I won't be staying here for long.
And it's not that Dylan isn't a nice person to hang out with, I genuinely didn't mind him that much, but I tried to keep my distance from the whole family. I didn't want their disappointment once I left on my conscience.
Once I got dressed and put some light make-up on my tired-looking face, I grabbed some notepads and my laptop and put them in my backpack. In order to follow through with my plan, I obviously had to try just a little bit in my course. And I didn't mind really, as I was always interested in psychology and how the human brain works.
Since I was 13, I've always wanted to become a psychiatrist, I wanted to help people with their life issues and demons which haunted them. I wanted to have a significant impact on people's lives and to be the guide through their problems. But that was then; that was before.
I made my way downstairs, and everyone was gathered in the kitchen either drinking coffee or eating the breakfast that was on the counter. There were some pancakes, waffles, scrambled eggs and pieces of toast.
"Morning Amber! Excited for you first day in college?" asked Olive while giving me a smile. Her and James grew tired of me always calling them Aunt Olive and Uncle James so they insisted that we were all on first name basis.
"Uhh yeah I guess" I replied, whilst taking a sip of my fresh coffee. The smell wafting through my nose is aromatic and addictive. I took another sip of the hot beverage, focusing solely on the taste and smell of the coffee. It was then that I saw three pairs of eyes staring at me, as if they were waiting for me to say something. "Umm sorry what did you say?"
"I asked whether you were nervous for your first day?" said James, looking at me and then back to his plate full of food. That's another thing, him and Dylan ate like they were starved to death. The amount of food I've seen the two men consume in the last few days was more than I would eat in a month.
"Not really, I won't be the only new student there which is good. I'm just gonna attend my classes and come home, that's all" I didn't want any drama and trouble while I'm here. The better the behaviour, the better the chance they won't suspect anything.
"Oh c'mon cous, you can't do that! We're gonna have some fun, I'll make sure of it" Dylan exclaimed whilst still chewing on some food. There was a piece of toast that fell from his mouth and landed on his plate, but he scooped it up in the next portion that landed straight in his mouth. A grimace formed on my face and I looked away from the mess Dylan was making.
"Alright kids, we're off to work. Enjoy your first day and behave please, and we'll see you tonight. We were thinking we could go out to eat to celebrate the start of college, how does that sound?" asked Olive as she was putting on her blazer and checking her briefcase, making sure she had everything.
"Sounds good to me" answered Dylan, and I nodded along as well. It's not like I had anything better to do in this town. My friends weren't here, but if they were we would probably be going to some bar in town which had easy access to alcohol and good music.
Olive and James left for work and it was just Dylan and me in the kitchen. I grabbed a piece of toast and covered it with butter, which melted into the bread which was my favourite. I always went through phases of just eating plain toast with butter for a few weeks and then I wouldn't touch it for months. Does everyone have that or am I just weird?
"So are you riding with me today then? What time is your first class?" asked Dylan, putting his empty plate in the dishwasher and then looking at me, waiting for my reply.
"Yeah I guess so. Mt first class is at 10am, is that alright?"
"Yeah so is mine. Alright, lee's get going then my dear cous" said Dylan, grabbing his backpack along with mine and leadings the way to the front door. We locked up and got into Dylan's car which was a Range Rover. It's still so unbelievable to me just how rich this family is, to have their 21 year old son have such a fancy and big car.
The drive took about 20 minutes, meaning that on foot it would probably take close to an hour. I made a mental note to myself to try and get rides from Dylan as often as possible unless I wanted to walk all this way. He found a parking space quite quickly, I grabbed my backpack from the back seat and exited the car.
The main building looked like any other college building, composed of red bricks and a lot of grass space that surrounded it. Student were walking in all directions, some were standing in groups; chatting and catching up with each other.
"Okay for the psychology building is just over there. Oh and if you want a ride back I finish at 3 today so you can meet me here" said Dylan with his arm wrapped around my shoulder.
"Yeah sure sounds good" I replied and started to walk away whilst giving him one last wave over my shoulder. I saw him heading towards the grass to the left, joining a group of guys who were sitting on one of the park benches. He started giving them all the bro hugs that guys often do. Ugh guys, I rolled my eyes and continued walking towards the psychology building.
I found the room of my class easily and went to open the door but it was locked. Hmm I guess I am a little bit early. I pulled out my phone to waste some time and saw a missed call from my mother along with a text saying 'Can you call me back please, I'm a little bit worried'. I've only talked to her once since being here, and that was straight after I've landed in California. The conversation was short, I didn't have much to say back then and I don't have much to say right now either.
With that in mind I texted her back letting her know I'm okay.
A few people started to gather outside the classroom, waiting for our professor to show up and let us in.
"Hey are you new here? I don't think I've ever seen you before?" said a voice to my right. I looked up at the person who just spoke and saw a guy who was probably a little bit older than me, probably by a year or two. He had piercing ocean-blue eyes and a goofy smile on his face. He was taller than me, but then again, who wasn't taller than my 5"3 frame. I could tell that he worked out often by his muscly biceps, although they weren't too muscly.
"So just because you've never seen me I must be new? You must be popular then if you know everyone on this campus" I replied, never understanding why people said that. It's impossible for you to recognise every single face that ever graced this campus, so why make the assumption that someone is a new student?
"Alright sassy girl I was just trying to make conversation" he said with a glint in his eyes.
"Not the best start, but I'll let it slide" I said and looked back down on my phone. I started scrolling through facebook, and saw some photos of my friends back in New York. Looked like they were having a blast, and I'll be joining them again in a few months.
"I'm Harvey and you are?" said Harvey extending his hand towards me for a handshake.
I looked at his hand skeptically, did people still shake hands? Especially people our age? I decided to do the polite thing and I put my hand in his "I'm Amber".
"Okay Amber, nice to meet you. So you never answered my question? Are you new here? First year?" he bombarded me with questions, seeming curious about me.
"Yes and yes" it would've probably been the polite thing for me to ask him the same questions but I couldn't be bothered and I also saw a professor heading this way. My guess is that he is my professor and he's about to open the classroom door and save me from polite small talk with Harvey.
As I predicted, the professor stopped right outside the door to our room and unlocked it, letting us in. I made my way inside and took a seat near the back fo the auditorium. The room was huge, with every row of seats a little bit higher than the last, meaning that I had to climb some steps to get to my desired seat. I took my notebook and laptop out of my backpack along with a pen. The desk in front of me was small, so I decided against using the notepad; I was a fast typer so it makes more sense to take notes on my laptop.
I felt a presence next to me and as I looked up, I saw Harvey settling down in the seat next to mine.
"Don't you have friends in this class that you can go and bother?" I asked in a cold tone.
"Nope" Harvey answered, popping the 'p'. Not a second later, I heard his name being called from the front of the room. I saw a group of girls and guys waving and making their way towards us. "Okay so I might have lied" he said, looking down at the ground but he still had a cheeky smile on his face.
"You don't say" I said looking at him with accusing eyes. This will not be the quiet day I have planned.
A slower chapter but don't worry, things will pick up soon.
Please don't forget to vote and comment :)
Until next time xx
