Gotta Tell Daddy
Legolas rode in front of Aragorn on Arod so that his friend could hold him steady. Gimli rode on Brego in front of them and Gandalf on Shadowfax beside them. As they rode, Legolas looked at the Elves around him. He saw Anmellia, Felanier, and Aron riding with each other and smiled. They were great friends, and he was glad they would have each other on this journey. As they neared the docks, Aragorn helped Legolas dismount and the four friends made their way to the boats. They would take a separate, smaller boat and follow the larger ones with the citizens. Aragorn, Gandalf, and Gimli helped the people onto the ships while Legolas watched carefully from nearby. Once everyone was on the ships, Legolas excused himself and walked off into the woods. Aragorn assumed it was to say goodbye to Middle Earth, and let his friend have some privacy.
They sent off the boats and promised that they wouldn't be far behind. Legolas still hadn't returned. Aragorn went into the woods to find him, but found nothing. He returned to Gimli and Gandalf and they aided him in his search. In the end, it was Gimli who found Legolas, but he wished he hadn't. Aragorn and Gandalf soon joined him and they, too, were overcome with grief. The Elf was lying against a tree with his own knife through his chest. His eyes were lifeless as they stared up at the Heavens. There were no signs of a struggle; so they had to conclude that it was suicide. Aragorn knelt next to his friend and - weeping - closed the ellon's eyes.
Gandalf carried Legolas to a grove of trees that was a secret spot for him. They buried Legolas in that place and put up a headstone that read:
Here lies Legolas, Son of Thranduil and the last King of Greenwood.
He served in the War of the ring and fought bravely to protect his friends and companions.
May he rest in peace.
The trio's hearts were heavy as they boarded their small boat and followed behind the large ships to the Undying Lands.
Legolas was on Aragorn's mind the whole trip. He'd failed to help his friend. How would he explain this to Thranduil? The former Elven King would not be happy. Gimli felt the heartbreak as well. He'd detested Elves before he'd met Legolas. He had become good friends with the Elf, and was greatly attached to him. Gimli prepared himself to take the blame from Thranduil, as Legolas' father had never liked dwarves. Gandalf knew he would get the blame. Thranduil had trusted him to protect his son and now the young man was dead. Whichever one he blamed, all three knew Thranduil would be heartbroken. All three knew he'd have to live out eternity without his only living relative. He'd be alone.
