Episode 13: Relax, the World Will not End
(This is an episode I am currently feeling. I have two finals. One I feel more prepared for, and the other, not so much. An, the joys of finals and being a college student. Regardless, I feel like Danny would have the same when it comes to his life too. Enjoy!)
Danny had a turn with the book and was training with his personal master who was not who he thought he would be like at all.
"Ah!" he screamed as he ducked from an incoming wave of ice.
Danny then countered with his own wave of ice, but the master simply spun his staff and redirected the ice to him! Danny gulped as he raised his hands to create a wall of ice. The ice shattered against the wall, but the master lunged forward to swing his stick to knock Danny off his feet and hold him in the air.
"Well, you lasted longer than I thought" the master confessed with a smirk.
Danny relaxed and sighed in defeat as he asked, "Can you please put me down, Jack Frost?"
"Sure" he answered as he simply lowered the staff to drop Danny on his side.
Danny groaned in pain as Jack Frost sat on his stick and looked at him. He had silver hair and clear blue eyes. He wore a blue hoddie and brown pants.
"What's gotten you more tense now?" he asked as he glanced at the student.
"Life" Danny replied as he didn't bother moving from his position on the ground.
"You gotta be more specific than that" Jack pointed out as he sat next to him, "Come on, what's going on? Randy? Ice powers not working right? Oh! Is it Sam? Or is it your new job?"
"It is literally everything" Danny answered, "I'm adjusting to my new job, my powers are fine, Sam is fine why are you asking about her, and then I have to help Dipper and Mabel with our supernatural hunting"
"Supernatural hunting? Are you hunting ghosts?" Jack asked confused.
"Sort of. This town has more secrets than we think" Danny answered as the book seemed to vibrate a white light.
"I don't think the book is so happy about that" Jack joked, "Relax, bookI am sure he's not going to release the spirit of a monster or something"
Danny groaned at him. He couldn't tell if he was cursed or not. He only briefly met the First Ninja, but he seemed to be a teacher for him compared to Jack. Jack is too much to him and a lot like Randy. Danny looked up to see Jack creating a snowball and throwing it towards the white light.
"Either way, I think you'll need a different lesson" Jack said simply as he faced Danny.
"And what is that?" Danny asked as he sat up.
"You're going to learn how to relax, or you'll disappear" Jack answered as he took his staff and tapped his staff against his head.
"What do you mean by that?" Danny asked as Jack smirked.
"Oh, you'll see" Jack answered as he then waved his staff to knock Danny out of the book.
"Gah!" he exclaimed as he sat up and found himself in the basement as Kim was reading a report.
"How'd it go?" she asked as she checked the reports.
"Strange. My mentor said I need to learn how to relax, or I will disappear" he answered her.
Kim looked up at him surprised as Danny shrugged. He didn't think much about it as he went to get some food for himself and then look at the texts from Tucker and Dipper about their ghost hunting adventure.
"Hey isn't your sister coming over?" Lapis asked as Danny felt his anxiety rise, "Woah, are you ok?"
"Yeah, why?" he asked as he looked at her.
She was on her phone and showed him the camera.
"I don't see anything" he said as she nodded her head.
"That's the point. I can't see you" she answered as Danny blinked and ran to a mirror.
He ran pass the girls' room and enter the bathroom. He couldn't see himself! He grabbed his hair and screamed.
"What is wrong? Some of us are trying to sleep!" Randy exclaimed as he exited his room and found nothing in the bathroom, "Ok?"
He wore a white shirt and brown shorts as he stepped out of his room. Kim and Lapis rushed to the bathroom as they glanced to Randy.
"Don't ask me. I don't see anything" he said as he gestured to the empty bathroom.
"I tried to tell him. I couldn't see him" Lapis explained.
Randy tilted his head as Kim asked, "Danny, are you ok?"
"No! I'm not! Why can't you see me?! Why can't I see myself?!" he exclaimed as he turned to his friends.
Randy was laughing as Lapis tried to comfort him. Kim pondered on this as Star exited her room. She had a white nightgown on as she rubbed her eyes.
"Did something happen?" she asked as she looked at the bathroom.
"Danny can't see himself, and we can't see him" Kim explained, "I don't know how to help him"
Star looked at the area where Danny could be and tilted her head back and forth.
"I mean, should we do anything? I like him like this!" Randy teased until Danny punched him.
The two of them broke into a fight as the girls tried to think about this.
"He mentioned that his mentor taught him a lesson about disappearing" Kim pointed out, "I suppose he was being literal with his lesson"
"So, how do we help?" Lapis asked curiously.
They heard a thud and found Randy fighting with nothing. The girls were not impressed with them, but they couldn't really do nothing either.
"Wait! Doesn't he know someone who is investigating in ghosts?" Lapis asked curiously.
"Right. His name is Dipper and his twin sister Mabel" Kim answered.
"What about the kid?" Danny asked as he looked at them and stopped strangling Randy.
"Maybe they can help you before your sister gets here" Star suggested until they saw his form reappearing, "Hey! You're back! Or not?"
He was fading in and out as they surrounded him. Randy crawled away from him and faced his friend. Danny was looking at his hands as he was fading. He was even shaking in place. He was scared. Randy thought about something and nodded to himself.
"Ok, so, what are you plans with the twins and Tucker? Hey, wasn't Sam coming too?" Randy asked gleefully.
Before Kim could scold him, Danny grinned and answered, "Yeah. We were going to check out an abandoned warehouse and see if the ghost was real. Tucker had an invention to try out too. Sam was coming around to help me relax when I see my big sister again later tonight"
He was reappearing before them! Randy took out his phone and then held it out to have Danny see himself.
"See? You're fine! I think you need to relax!" Randy reassured his friend.
"Relax?" Danny whispered before he let his anger take over, "The mentor did this to me!"
He ran down the stairs and rushed back to the basement with his friends behind him. He arrived to find the room covered in ice! His friends joined him as they saw the scene.
"Woah. What did you do to make Nomicon so upset?" Randy asked surprised.
Then, the book opened to let Jack Frost appeared before them. He swung his staff behind his neck and smirked at Danny.
"Well, you caught on, but you didn't pass my lesson yet" he answered his student.
"What do you mean I haven't passed it?!" Danny exclaimed as he faced his mentor, "I have to meet my sister! Remove this!"
He began to fade away as the thought of his sister visiting came up.
"Nope. I can't remove it. Only you can" Jack answered as Danny began to panic, "You have to solve this issue yourself. Much like how Randy had an issue with his mentor, you have an issue with me"
He pointed his staff at Danny as a harsh cold wind blew over him. Although he wasn't freezing, his friends were. Randy quickly transformed and summoned his katana and have fire burn from it to keep his friends warm. Jack didn't let up on his attack, and Danny wasn't going to let him keep hurting his friends. He tried to take control of the ice and redirect it away from his friends.
"If they keep this up, they'll ruin the base!" Kim shouted over their attacks.
Randy held his scarf and used it to wrap around the book to pull it close to himself. He then ran out of the flat as Jack was pulled after him! Jack smirked as he let himself be pulled back into the book. The ice ceased as Danny sighed in relief.
"Quick thinking, Randy" Star said as she waved to him.
He shrugged as he went back to the flat, but the book jumped from his hands as Jack reappeared! Everyone looked at him surprised.
"I am not going away any time soon" he taunted to Danny who let out a frustrated yell, "Ah, anger. Not the emotion I'm looking for. You're too tense, and your anxiety is too high. I am not saying you need to get rid of it, because I know that impossible. But you need to control it somehow"
Danny faced his mentor who held a serious expression.
"If you don't learn how to control your emotions, the emotions will control you" Jack answered seriously as he pointed his staff at him, "It is not so easy to let it go, but it is a step for you to learn how to control it"
Everyone turned to Danny who was holding himself. He was shaking in place at the lesson before him.
"Hey, don't you think you're being harsh on him?" Kim asked as she prepared to defend her friend.
Jack glanced to her and answered, "You know, this book has been in the hands of kings and queens before. One queen almost lost control over the powers because of her emotions. I would rather not have Danny's emotions take control of himself and hurt others. Some failures are not worth repeating"
Jack then turned to Danny before waving his hand to have the book float to him. He then waited at the basement of their flat and placed the book back on the shelf. Then, he sat on the ground and decided to wait.
"I won't do anything else, but I won't return to the book until you've proven yourself to me that you can control your emotions, or at least start learning how" Jack informed them, "But I would probably close the door if I were you. I don't think people are going to be pleased to see all of this without an explanation"
Randy also realized he was in his Hero form and decided to hideaway for a bit as the girls turned their attention to Danny. Danny could feel himself fading in and out, but he wasn't sure how he could control his anxiety. It was never easy for him as a kid, but as an adult, it was sort of manageable. Sure, it did spike whenever they had to fight enemies, whenever he talked with his parents, and whenever he had to think through a situation. Did his anxiety rise without him noticing? If that's the case, then how is he going to control it now?!
"Danny" Lapis said softly as she sat next to him, "We will help you figure this out"
"And we better figure it out fast, because his sister is coming to pick him up" Star informed her as Danny began to panic.
"I don't think mentioning his big sister was the best idea" Kim said as they stepped back when Danny was holding himself.
Ice gathered around him as he held his head. He was panicking as his friends were not sure how to help him.
"Remember!" Jack Frost said over the snowstorm, "He has to be the one to figure this out and realize what he should do to calm down! You can reach your hand out as much as you want, but he has to ask for it and grab it himself"
Everyone hesitantly looked at their friend who was trying to calm himself down. A thousand thoughts were running through his mind as he tried to calmly think through his feelings. He was anxious about his older sister visiting. That is the source of his anxiety at the moment.
"I know Jazz never meant to make me anxious" he whispered as he hugged himself.
"Really?" Lapis asked as she sat outside of his snowstorm, "Why does she make you anxious?"
Danny looked to see Lapis holding a calm expression as she remained still.
He slowly began to relax as he let out, "She's great. She always made me feel special. She always looked after me when we were kids"
The snowstorm slowly died away and allowed his other friends to slowly reach out to him.
"She sounds fantastic!" Star exclaimed in delight, "I've always wanted siblings! It has just been me. What is she like?"
Danny slowly felt his breathing relax as he sat down in a more relaxed position. He could slowly feel himself calming down as Jack grinned.
"She's smart, pretty, and a know-it-all" Danny asked as he laughed at her comment, "But she's the only big sister I've got. I wouldn't change it for the world"
He smiled as he slowly thought about the fun times he had with his big sister. Whether it was going to the park, playing video games, doing homework, and other random activities, they were happy together and had a bunch of fun.
"But why does she make you anxious?" Kim asked as she stood and faced him, "If you have found memories of her, why are you so tense?"
That's right... They had met a few weeks ago. They weren't around to make jokes, give comfort, help, and listen.... He finally looked up to see his friends standing in front of him. He finally had friends. He wasn't alone anymore, and they can listen to him and his nerves.
"It wasn't her fault" Danny said slowly as he noticed Randy had finally returned, "She was always better at everything than me. I am nothing like her in terms of academics, popularity, and friends. She's always our parents' pride and joy. I'm just me"
He felt a huge relief saying that. He faced his friends who slowly sat with him as Randy stood up and leaned against a wall.
"Hey, last I check we are a team" he said as Kim gave him a skeptical look, "We talk with each other about whatever is on our minds. Regardless of if we went through the same experience as you. As far as I am concerned, you're smart and have a ton of friends. I am one of your friends, even if we don't see eye-to-eye"
Danny chuckled at that as he closed his eyes. They were right. He has a lot of friends now, and he finally got a job! His smile softened as he recalled his other friends, Tucker, Dipper, Mabel, Dr. Flynn, and Sam too.
"That's it" he whispered as he finally relaxed, "I know how to get a better handle on this"
The ice finally ceased as he grinned at his friends.
"Thank you" he answered them, "It is nice to finally talk about this with friends. I was pretty alone growing up, always being too nervous to talk with anyone. But now, I'm grateful that I finally have friends"
His friends grinned at him as he then faced his mentor. Jack held a proud expression as he stood up and faced his student.
"See? I knew you could do it" Jack said with pride, "It took you awhile, but this is a lesson I need you to learn"
"I understand" Danny replied as he felt himself shake but not a lot, "And you were just trying to help me see that. I was so caught up in worrying that I couldn't see it. You don't want me to live that life of being afraid and anxious when I should just live my life"
"Yeah, that's my job" Jack said with pride as he then used his staff to pick up the book and then open it, "And I'll keep reminding you of it until you get it right, but something tells me you already know that and will work for it. Until then, my student"
A gust of wind blew as Jack disappeared into the book. The book closed as Danny finally sat down, exhausted but relieved. Star and Randy helped him sit up as he gave them a relief expression.
"You ok?" Star asked as she helped him stand.
"Yeah. Thanks" Danny answered in relief.
"Again, we are friends. No matter what you do" Randy answered with a grin.
"Are you ready to see your big sister?" Lapis asked with concern.
"I should be fine, but if you guys want, you could come with me to see my parents too. I am sure they wouldn't mind meeting my friends" Danny asked with a smile.
Star and Randy were excited as Lapis shook her head at them. Kim helped him up and prepare to visit his family. Jack Frost was laying on the ground in the book as he heard Danny finally sigh in relief. Jack was happy that his student was able to calm himself down and take the first step to understanding and finding a way to control his emotions. Though, he did hear his student yelling at the First Ninja's student about his jokes. Jack could hear the joy and anger in his voice and smiled. Meanwhile, Kim was watching her friends and noticed they were supporting each other as well as learning without her guidance.
"Do they even need a leader?" she whispered unsure as she looked at her hands.
She wondered if she could even be a leader to this team. She shook her head and decided to meet with her teacher tomorrow, first thing in the morning.
