Chapter 23

"How? What happened?" Freddy asked, taking a step forward to catch Chica in time before she collapsed onto the tiled kitchen floor. He slowly helped her kneel down instead. The chicken animatronic was utterly shocked by this news. Taking a seat on a nearby chair, Vanessa couldn't even look anyone in the eye as she mumbled, "There was a police report the morning after we first found Grace. Car crash during the night, a young man and woman of Asian descent had died. But there was evidence that there was a small child with them."

"Grace must've crawled out unscathed and found her way over here that night," Gregory theorized from where he was sitting on the counter. The young boy's voice dropped to almost a whisper as he asked, "Does... does that mean Grace is an orphan now? Like... like me?" Standing up, Freddy gently pulled the boy into a comforting hug as he rumbled, "I'm afraid so Gregory."

"Does she have any other family?" Chica whimpered, wiping her hand across her cheek. Oily tears were leaking out from her eyes. Reaching over and grabbing a towel, Vanessa handed it to the crying robot as she admitted, "I don't know, the police couldn't identify the bodies. There was too much damage." Everyone fell silent again before Gregory dared to ask, "What will happen to Grace now?"

"She would have to go to the local orphanage after I take her to the police," Vanessa explained. Chica lowered her head in sadness when she heard that. She knew Grace couldn't stay forever but she had grown so attached to the little tike. It was going to hurt saying goodbye. Just then, she felt a gentle hand rest on her shoulder. The chicken animatronic looked up. Standing before the robot, Vanessa remarked, "That is, if I took her to the police."

"Wait, what?" everyone blurted out at the same time. Shrugging her shoulders, Vanessa stated calmly, "Grace would only be able to go to the orphanage if I took her to the police. However, that's so much paperwork that I don't wanna do." Shocked, Chica stuttered, "Are you saying..." Smiling, the security guard simply nodded her head in response.

There was a moment of silence before a squeal of delight broke it. The squeal had come from Chica. Jumping to her feet, the chicken animatronic yanked Vanessa into a bone crushing hug. Then she rushed over and scooped up Grace. Spinning in a circle with the child held high, Chica cried, "Gracie! Did you hear?! You're staying with me!" Though there was possibly no way of knowing whether or not the youngster understood a word, Grace giggled happily.

"That was very sweet Vanessa," Freddy rumbled softly, patting the woman on the back. Adjusting her cap on her head, Vanessa waved the bear animatronic off as she replied, "Oh please, it's the least I could do. Besides, I meant it. I don't feel like driving all the way to the police station on the other side of town to file paperwork."

"Wow, lazy much?" Gregory commented. This earned him some glares.

"Roxy! Over here!" Pedro called out, waving his hand in the air. He had picked a table near a mural of race cars on a racetrack. Spotting the teen, Roxy wagged her tail. Approaching the table, the wolf animatronic was surprised to find drinks and other snacks laid out. "I see you found some goodies," she remarked, sitting down and plopping the plate of pizza in front of Pedro. Gratefully taking a slice, Pedro answered, "Yeah, I figured we could have a proper lunch."

"Kid, you're at Freddy Fazbear's. There's no such thing as a proper lunch here," Roxy chuckled. Taking a bag of chips, the robot opened it up and helped herself. Thanks to Shane's new upgrades, the animatronics could eat now. They just had to remember to empty out the contents at the end of each day. Munching away on the chips, Roxy looked back at all of the snacks. "Seriously though," she murmured, "How did you get this stuff? Did your parents buy it?"

"No, um... I actually bought it myself," Pedro stated, his mouth full of cheesy pizza at the moment. Humming to herself, Roxy remarked, "So they lent you some money." When she didn't get a reply, the wolf animatronic lifted her gaze. Pedro was quietly sipping his juice, trying to find anything else to look at. Yeah, that wasn't suspicious at all. Flicking an ear, Roxy rumbled, "Pedro? What aren't you telling me?"

"Promise you won't be mad?" Pedro finally mumbled. As he spoke, he pulled a wallet out of his pocket and slid it across the table. Picking it up, Roxy opened it and inspected the contents. She was greeted with the driver's license of some middle aged man that was definitely not Pedro. Looking back at the teen, the wolf asked, "Where did you find this? The parking lot?" Twiddling with his thumbs, Pedro shook his head and murmured, "I actually took it out of his pocket last night."

"Well, I'm not mad considering I did the same thing to the staff years ago. But Pedro, I'm disappointed. You don't need to steal money, or anything for that matter," Roxy pointed out, setting the wallet down. Keeping his gaze down in shame, Pedro rubbed his shoulder nervously as he muttered, "I know but... it's the only way I can survive." Her ears perking up, Roxy questioned, "What do you mean?" Sighing quietly, Pedro finally blurted out, "I'm homeless..."

Roxy's ears drooped. Pedro was homeless? The boy who was her biggest fan and made her life so much better was living on the streets. She couldn't believe it. But the more she stared at the teenager, the wolf animatronic could see specks of dirt on his clothes, the dents in his wheelchair and how skinny he was. The poor thing. The robot could feel oily tears beginning to form in her eyes. Forcing them back, she reached across the table and gently grasped his hand. "Pedro," Roxy spoke softly, "You're not homeless anymore. Stay with me."

"Really?" Pedro piped up quietly, finally lifting his gaze. A soft smile painted on her face, Roxy nodded her head. Happy tears running down his cheeks, the teenager moved over to the robot's side of the table and gave her a great big hug. Returning the embrace while her tail wagged, Roxy whispered, "Welcome home Pedro."
