People post about Vicki Wang everywhere. Pictures of her from the yearbook, her senior photos — it's seen everywhere, from Snapchat all the way to Facebook. It's ironic, she's sure half of these people originally were the ones who posted the condescending comments about her on the Dark Web. Jade doesn't go to her funeral, the procession is small and very selective.
None of the Crowns take to social media to talk about Vicki. The most any of them do is Jisoo, and it's a story update of her hands holding sunflowers, with a small caption in the corner saying 'im numb'. She doesn't know if the girl is actually genuine though.
Later on though, word gets around that Hyunjin is hosting a night out at his father's nightclub. Ironically, it's called the Five Crowns. Jade never knew the meaning behind their group name, but now she suspects that the five must've spent a lot of time at this nightclub if they were to take its name. Ryujin texts Jade to dress up and meet them there.
It's actually quite fitting that Hyunjin would invite a bunch of people to the club. In fact, it's a great way to forget everything that's going on. A perfect spot to make more mistakes. Jade had almost applied for a position at the Five Crowns. Yes, she was underage but after an interview with her, Jade probably would've convinced them of her capabilities. Then she realized Hyunjin's dad was the one running it, and she quickly declined the offer.
So Jade leaves her house around 10 p.m. and sneaks out the back entrance. Her family doesn't approve of nightclubs, but all that Jennie knows is that she's going "out". Believing that, the older sister lets Jade take her car for a drive again. This time, she wears are large hoodie once again borrowed from her younger brother to avoid any conflict.
Once she's driving, Jade rings up Ryu. The girl picks up quickly.
"Jade! Where are you?"
"You sound hyper. Are you drinking?"
"No!" She laughs. "I'm perfectly sober. I'm waiting for you, that's all."
"Don't you think this is weird? Partying right after her funeral?"
"This isn't something unusual, Jade. It's almost a tradition."
"You mean to say you guys party whenever someone dies?" Jade presses on the accelerator. "Wow. The idea of being popular is seriously fucked."
"No! That's not what I meant." She can hear Ryujin chuckling. She must be in a bathroom, the music is muffled. "The nightclub is always used to take our mind off of things."
"Did not know there was an agenda for these kind of situations."
"You figure it out as you experience things."
The girls continue to talk until Jade reaches the colorful nightclub, which is pretty large in the nightlife. By then she ends the call, and takes a look at the building in front of her. It's big. She can already hear the remixed music booming. Slightly excited, and hoping this is better than Jeongguk's party, she heads towards the building.
Everyone seems to have fakes, Jade shows hers to the bouncer standing at the entrance, and she walks in without a second glance. There's lots of people she recognizes this time. People are mingled in with young adults who generally come here to party, but the first face she recognizes is Jisoo's. When they make eye contact, the brunette grins gaily, waving her over into the sea of people.
She passes her hoodie over to where an employee is manning the coats and jackets. Strange enough, Jade feels a lot more at ease here than she did at his house.
"You look good." Jisoo shouts over the music, and around her are several other Olympians. Ryujin is still nowhere to be seen.
"Thanks—"
"JK is there if you want to pay him a visit." She points behind Jade, and when she turns she can see him and Jaebum sitting at the bar with drinks. "Be careful though. He might not restrain himself." And then Jisoo eyes the girl's choice of outfit.
It's just an average club outfit. Jade put together a matching two-piece, a glittery bralette and a dark colored skirt.
"Actually, you should go over there. He probably wants to talk to you anyways." And that's how she's shoved over in the bar's direction. Now she spots Ryu, who's actually talking to Jimin. She seems to be deep in conversation, the girl doesn't even notice Jade's entrance. Not that it matters, Ryu is always around her, sometimes it's nice to have the space.
"Sapphire!" Jaebum's voice pulls her out of her thoughts, and a scowl forms immediately on her face. "You're here!"
"It's Jade."
"Wow look at you." Jeongguk rests a hand on her back. "You showed up."
"Jisoo shoved me over here, otherwise I would be over there. What do you want now?"
"Believe it or not; nothing." He makes eye contact with the kid occupying the seat next to him, no words need to be said when that boy awkwardly gets up and moves away. Sometimes Jade forgets the power Jeongguk has, it's almost as vicious as what Vicki's once was.
"Thanks for coming to the rooftop on such short notice." He starts, as Jade takes a seat in the bar stool he pulls over for her. "I think you've noticed that you're slowly becoming more and more absorbed in our world. It's a lot more uglier than you would think."
"I've seen bits and pieces." She believes his words. He looks back at the drink in his hand, and she notices by the slight tinge of pink in his cheeks...that he's slowly becoming less and less sober.
That's when she looks at Jaebum. The one who can't even get her name right. She's sure he knows it, but chooses not to call her by something she prefers. He has been looking at her the entire time. The older boy is more of the quiet type, he will talk if he has to, but sometimes it's better to be silent. You can learn a lot more when you're quiet.
He is handsome. Actually she wants to correct herself; Im Jaebum is very handsome. It's the perfect amount of cliche bad boy mixed in with his quiet, intellectual personality. The earrings and the hair, and she will be honest with herself; it's a look. Jade likes it, strange enough. Makes her want to get to know him better.
"Let's call a truce Lei." Jeongguk speaks up momentarily, completely oblivious to the fact that they had unashamedly been checking each other out. He's drunk, so it's not of any concern to him. Hesitantly, she looks back to him.
"Truce?"
"We're not really fighting, but I need to know that we're on the same side. I'm worried about what will happen tomorrow. And the day after that...you get the idea."
"Yes we are." She narrows her eyes. "I need to know if you'd do the same." He seems to get what he implies, nonetheless he nods slowly.
"Say it, don't just nod." Jade mumbles, and Jaebum lets out a small laugh.
"Yes I swear on my life." When he leans in close to cross pinkies with her — it's childish act but he initiates it so the girl doesn't care — she notices something off on his forehead.
Near his eyebrow. It looks like regular skin, but the area is more pale than it should be. Like it's foundation found in his mom's closet. Was that a bruise Jeongguk was hiding?
Jade smiles at him, then moves away. She doesn't know if she just signed her soul to the devil or not.
