Alone (4)

It was a big adjustment. Hopefully they can understand that it isn't easy for him at the moment. He doesn't want any expectations. Not after the amount of time the village held such large expectations for such a small boy.

The villages views on him are what caused him to be even farther from the image of a viking than what he was already. He turned to drawing and creating things, hoping for the villages and his father's approval.

But he never got it.

His confidence was always rather small. The rough treatment from the village destroyed whatever courage he had manage to bring together over the years. Though they had knocked it down every time. His small wall of courage was no match for their comments.

That's why it was so hard being back. He expected for his "fame" -as Snotlout had called it- to only last for about a week after he had awoken. He expected to be shut out again and pushed off the side and stepped on as they took their problems out on his as they did to the dragons for many years.

But they didn't. And it really made Hiccup self-conscious about his day-to-day choices. He forced himself to go through everything and make sure it worked out perfectly.

It didn't help with the fact that vikings kept coming to him for dragon advice. He was more than happy to help. Though after a while, as the stress piled up, it made it harder to focus and think thoroughly through everything.

Maybe the problem was that Hiccup thought too much into things, as to what eventually began to drive him into the ground. He tried to hide it. Though he wasn't completely sure as to what he was trying to hide. There was a lot going on.

He felt as though nobody could understand what he feels. As though he wouldn't listen to how he feels. Even if it looks as though they listen, they'd just continue on as to what was on their minds at the moment.

He felt trapped. Like he couldn't find the brighter days that were promised. Like they were sold to someone more deserving of it. Someone who fit in better and was liked. To a person who liked more based on their looks. Not someone who had more demons writing out their lives.

Hiccup has demons. He met them around the age of eight. They were in the shadows for most of his life, but as hit finally became a teenager, those demons made themselves known. He had hoped that he could out fly them.

Then they grew wings and tagged along.

During the years of his youth, he remembers being on his own. He never had only one to talk to. Except Gobber. Though he wasn't the best of comforting him with his social problems.

During the five years of exploring, Hiccup met people. Those people never got close to Hiccup, as he made sure he never stayed somewhere too long. Except for  few instances were his presence wasn't welcome and he stayed longer than he intended. But that is a story for another time.

He learned new things from those people. He learned new traditions, learned about different cultures...

He learned a lot.

He also learned about social anxiety.

He heard how people were caught being so judgmental about people with a social anxiety disorder, it got Hiccup thinking: How could someone be judged so poorly based on who they are?

He remembers asking people about this disorder, because if you are from Berk, and sort of disorder or injury is considered weak. That was what it was defined as. It was called being weak.

He realized how some of these problems, he could relate to some of them.

He never liked big crowds. He constantly felt judged-and he was. He didn't like the feeling of being alone with people surrounding him, talking about something tat they would never share with him. He winced when he heard people laughing, as he thought they would be laughing at one of his mistakes.

He knew he was never one with the crowds. He always felt so...

Alone. Constantly watched. Judged. He never from the very start that he would never fit in.

Back to the problem at hand. Even after he had woken up after the battle, the villagers still don't listen to him.

He still felt alone. He knows that even with all that has happened, he still felt as if he was still being avoided. Hiccup was never the one to like being avoided. Which is why when he realized that Astrid started avoiding him soon after he had awoken, it drew him an even harder path. A path that was known to be hard to lead someone away from it.

He never noticed whether or not people caught on to his inner demons taking over his mind.

He thought it would be the same as ever.

People not noticing his silent cries for help.
