Chapter 19 - Red Hood is...

"The Bird's Opening, Robin. That can't be random." Kory shook her head.

"Ann lived at 2289 Blue Bird Way." Kayleigh pointed.

"How about we check all Gotham streets with bird names." Erin yawned, leaning back in her chair.

"There's five in Gotham.
Blue Bird, Condor Court, Finch Street, Falcon Way and Eagle Crest. I'll see if the numbers correlate to the actual addresses and the addresses of the next victims." Gar typed.

That's when the door opened and Hank walked in.

"I pedaled as fast as I could." Hank smiled.

"Hank!" Kory smiled.

"How are you doing, Kory." Hank asked.

Dawn didn't look to impressed and Erin crossed her arms, turning away from her dad. Kory laughed and hugged him before Hank turned away and looked at Erin. Erin stayed silent, refusing to look back at him.

"Kid?" Hank raised a brow.

"No." Erin got up.

"Erin." Hank sighed.

"Nu-uh." She shook her head and walked off.

Hank looked at his friends before he followed after her. Erin walked into another room, knocking over something on a nearby table.

"Erin, let me explain." Hank sighed.

"What the fuck?" She turned,"You just show up out of nowhere? No phone call?"

"I heard about everything... Things weren't going well in DC so I came back, I missed you kid." Hank shook his head.

"I find that hard to believe since you never told me what was going on with you." Erin pointed.

"Dawn and I- We... We broke up. And I needed time. I told you you could come with me if you wanted." Hank nodded.

"I couldn't just leave, I need to save other people. I need to make up for what happened." Erin sighed.

"What happened, wasn't your fault." Hank put a hand on her shoulder.

"Not just with Donna, with Ra's." Erin smacked his hand away.

"And that wasn't your fault either." He pointed, "Nothing is."

"Dad.." Erin looked down.

"Ra's Al Ghul took advantage of you, manipulated and brainwashed you. You were young, a little girl. That was not your fault." Hank shook his head.

Erin bit her lip,"Come on, then. We have work to do."

"Can I get a hug from my little girl first?" Hank opened his arms.

"If you insist." Erin hugged him.

Hank chuckled and rubbed her back, "I missed you, kid."

"I missed you, too." Erin nodded

"You forgive me?" Hank asked her.

"You're forgiven." Erin sighed.

Hank hummed and kissed her head, "C'mon."

"Hey. They have hostages but they won't talk to us, issued no demands." Barbara shook her head to Dick.

"It's not a bank robbery, tell your men to pull back." Dick sighed.

"Pull back?" Barbara looked up at him in confusion.

"It's a setup, just like with Ann Williams. They've been forced into it, I think it's the same person behind it." Dick explained.

"So what? We just pull back and wait for the mayhem to start?" Barbara sighed.

"No, I'll go in and talk with them. They're not criminals, they're parents that think their children are in danger." Dick told her,"I have my younger Titans looking for them right now. That's the leverage, we find them and this'll all go away. Call your men off and let us handle it "

"If you're wrong, this is gonna be a bloodbath." Barbara warned.

"We've got this." Dick assured her.

Barbara hesitated before she spoke, "Stand down!"

That's when the forces soon backed away, lowering their guns.

"All right. Each of us has a gunman to contain. But remember, they're not professionals. They're scared, may be on drugs, so don't be surprised
if they're irrational. No sudden moves. No loud voices, the calmer the better." Dick explained.

"Please..." The bank worker whimpered.

"Come on, give me the bag." The man hurried her.

"Please, don't.." She shook her head.

"It's time." He nodded.

"Do it. He has my son, he has our kids!" Another man shouted.

"Wait, stay back! Easy. Everyone, just relax. You don't have to do this. Look, we know somebody took your children and forced you into this. We're gonna find them and bring them back to you safe and sound. Nobody needs to get hurt." Dick held his hands up.

Conner then opened the door of a van while looking with the others underground and discovered it full of tied up children.

"We found the kids." He spoke through his headset.

Kayleigh walked a bit further, to a van that looked similar to the one where the kids were. Peeking in through the window before she quickly opened it.

"Guys? The people in the bank aren't the parents." Kayleigh turned quickly.

"Shit, Dick!" Erin shouted through the headset,"It's a setup!"

"Now, it's over." The man smirked, pulling his mask down as he threw a bomb.

The Originals were knocked to the ground as an explosion went off in the bank.

**

"They walked out with 25 million and drove off with my men two blocks away. You practically gave them a police escort." Barbara looked at Dick.

"We got played. I'm sorry, but it happens." Dick shrugged.

"Didn't happen with Batman. Be a better Batman, I believe were the instructions, Dick." Barbara crossed her arms.

"Whoever this is, this is exactly what they want." Dick pointed.

"Which is?" Barbara raised a brow.

"Mistrust between us." Dick sighed.

"Well, they should've called first. That box was already checked." Barbara scoffed.

"Those guys at the bank looked like Perez's people. I find them, I find out who's running this show." Dick told her.

"The people who have sworn to defend Gotham will handle it. The ones in this building." She made clear.

"I can help." Dick began.

"I stood down for you tonight. Nobody else could have convinced me to do that. It wasn't professional." Barbara shook her head.

"Right, keep it professional." Dick nodded slowly,"I'm sorry we failed you tonight, Commissioner."

"The city is on edge and it's my job to protect them, not yours. This is a police matter." Barbara warned.

**

Hank was stood in the kitchen and soon took out a tub of something, he didn't know what, from the fridge and began to eat it.

"Hey, man. What you eating?" Dick walked up.

"I don't know." Hank shrugged,"Gar made it, I think."

"That's Krypto's." Dick chuckled.

Hank stopped eating and slowly put the tub back in the fridge before turning to Dick,"How'd it go with Barbara?"

"She said she wants us to keep it professional." Dick quoted her.

"Woah, the 'break up and work together' thing it's for amateurs." Hank pointed.

"There's nothing going on between us anymore." Dick pointed back.

"Of course." Hank nodded.

"Serious." Dick pointed.

"Oh, yeah, sure." Hank agreed,"Want me to go out and grab a shovel, help you dig a little deeper?"

"I disappointed her, fucked it up again. Bruce wouldn't have fallen for that bank shit." Dick sighed.

"Eh, nobody's perfect. Not even Bruce." Hank reminded him,"He sure wasn't the other night."

"Before we took off, he asked me to stay. Said the city's mine." Dick sat down.

"It's kinda like asking your adult son to move back home, sleep in your bed, wear your old slippers." Hank told him.

"It's a little weird." He chuckled.

"Yeah." Hank nodded.

"It was good to see the Hawk today." Dick looked at him.

"Yeah, it felt good. I got some repairs done." Hank informed him.

"Stu?" He raised a brow.

"Wanted 40K for reconditioning." Hank pointed,"Found a lady at the dry cleaner who did it for 100 bucks."

"You looked good. Though Dawn tells me you rocked the bike shorts back in D.C." he covered his mouth to hold back his laugh.

"Hey! Those are pursuit-and-attack shorts, mother fucker." Hank pointed.

Dick laughed before he stood up, "Lemme go check on Kory, see how she's doing."

"Hey, whoever this is fucking with us, he's going down. And we're gonna be the ones to do it so chin fucking up, amigo." Hank crossed his arm.

"Chin up." He held his chin up as he walked out.

**

Kayleigh looked at the chess board, moving a piece. Kory smirked and moved another piece while Erin and Conner were reading a book, Gar standing nearby.

"I know what you're doing. Psyops. Mastered by the Russians." Kayleigh pointed.

"You do know I'm from another planet, right?" Kory raised a brow.

"Allegedly." Kayleigh hummed.

"Do you always get this way when you're completive." Kory asked.

"If you mean insane, then yes." Erin nodded

"I'm problem solving. The Bird's Opening. The answer's right in front of us, it's hidden in plain sight." Kayleigh explained, tilting her head.

"Hey, speaking of Russians, this guy named Bobby Fischer had the fillings in his mouth removed because he thought the Russians were using it as a radio transmitter." Conner chuckled.

"Stop." Kayleigh turned to him.

"It's a fact." He told her.

"Hold on, Fischer took out his own fillings?" Kayleigh raised a brow.

"I'm not sure if I should talk or not." Conner turned to Erin and Gar.

"He did it because he thought the Russians were trying to beat him." Kayleigh turned to Erin, remembering when they learned chess, "It was a defensive move. We're looking at this the wrong way. The answer isn't figuring out more of Bird's Opening moves, it's how we beat it. Conner, top five defensive moves against Bird's Opening."

Kayleigh pointed as Dick walked in and went to speak.

"I wouldn't, she's on a roll." Erin raised a hand.

From's Gambit, the modern defense. fianchetto." Conner read out.

"Fianchetto." Erin nodded.

"Hobbs Gambit.." Conner read on.

"Hobbs?" Dick raised a brow.

"Unsound, but nonetheless interesting and uncommon." Conner explained.

"No, not that, Hobbs Powder Group. They used to sell explosives." Dick walked over to the computer and started typing,"Batman and I shut them down for street dealing."

"There was a call minutes ago coming from the Hobbs Building." Gar turned to the screen.

Dick sighed and clicked, letting the distressed recording play.

After they heard it, Dick quickly sat up straight, "It's a bogus call, he's leading them into a trap."

"Call Barbara." Kory told him.

"I don't think she's taking my calls." Dick turned.

"Well, we have to stop those cops." Erin crossed her arms.

"Let's get the spike strips." Dick walked out.

**

The others were fighting some men, but Dick separated, going to look for Red Hood.

"What took you so long?" He heard a voice.

"I got here as soon as I could." Dick sighed, looking around.

When Dick looked ahead, he seen Red Hood, a gun in his hands.

"Thought I was gonna have to hire a skywriter. Nice work on the chess clue, though." Red nodded.

"It wasn't me, I had my team working on it." Dick told him,"Looks like you had a team, too."

"They were expendable, just like the Titans." Red Hood pointed.

"Who are you?" Dick shook his head.

"The one they'll run to when you let them down. Gotham, it's mine now." Red Hood told him.

That's when Red began shooting, so Dick quickly ducked.

"We'll see about that." Dick threw a throwing star.

"Come on, man, you know the tune." Jason walked around, shooting at Dick,"Outgunned, Outmanned.."

Dick managed to evade Red before they eventually came face to face.

"Just throw in the towel and I promise I'll be gentle." Red spoke before the two began to fight.

Halfway through the fight, Red fell to the ground, a part of his helmet falling off as he stood up, letting it reveal who he was

"Bruce always told me you were better than me with the toys." He spoke slowly.

"Jason..?" Dick blinked.

"In living color. I got a new name now, though. You'll be hearing it a lot around here. 'Red Hood'." Jason smirked before he threw a smoke bomb and he disappeared.
