Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng reached Jiang Yanli's cafe a little before 8 PM. They entered the almost empty cafe as it was closing time. The cashier recognized them and directed them to the seats near the window. They had seating was such that the brothers would get a great view of the quaint alley the cafe was situated in.
Wuxian loved the tiny cafe. It was his sister's solace and he had helped create the atmosphere. Though Wuxian was a graphic design student, he had gone to all the thrift stores and markets with his sister to look for furniture that would make the cafe give a cozy vibe. He was actually proud of how he had helped shape up the interior to match with the owner's lovely character. Yanli didn't have much help so Cheng and him did all the heavy lifting. Later the Nie brothers had joined in as well. Wei Wuxian had even designed the logo for Yanli's cafe much to her utter delight.
After Yanli had opened for business, he had been there numerous times with his brother and Nie Huaisang to try out new recipes when Yanli would ask. The three had the best of times in the cafe and he always looked forward to visiting it.
Today however, was a different story. Today the Yunmeng brothers had come in to finally talk to their sister about her cryptic tweets and whatever she was going through.
"Do you think she is OK?"
"I don't know, Cheng. She's been acting weird from last night."
"I am afraid to ask"
"Me too.. but she has called us here to explain, so I guess let's wait?"
"Hmm..." was all Cheng said.
When all the customers had left, Yanli came out of the kitchen wiping her hands on her apron. The brothers' heads snapped up the moment she emerged out of the kitchen. The red rims around her eyes clearly gave away the fact that she had cried and both boys ha to force themselves to calm down. They wanted to hit anyone who had hurt their precious sister. She walked up to the with a smile on her face, in complete contrast to her disheveled look.
The moment she was near the table, both boys jumped up from their seats and hugged her. She laughed and hugged them back as they bombarded her with question, "Are you OK, Jie?", "We have been so worried..." and so on.
"I am fine boys. Really, I am. Come let's sit. I have a lot of things that I need to talk to you about."
All of them took a seat at the table and then Yanli recounted the story again. This time she didn't hide anything from them. As she continued, she could see her brothers were agitated. Cheng being the hot-headed one in the family, was fuming but what surprised her was Xian's reaction. She had never seen the cold, angry glint in his eyes before. He was always such a calm and collected person but tonight, he looked like he was itching for a fight..
"I know you wanna beat him up and I know I can't stop you. However, I would like you to reconsider, please. He's rich and he can sue you."
"Can't promise anything"
"What he said"
"Boys!"
"No... you can't stop us now Jie. All this while you have hid things from us. We knew something was wrong, we knew you were not happy but you never confided in us. You shut us out." Cheng burst out, angry with Zixuan, Yanli and himself for not being able to help his sister out.
"I know Chengcheng but I never wanted to bother you guys.." Along with the anger she could see the hurt that had seeped into his eyes. It hurt her to know that she was the one who had brought that emotion out in him.
"Bother us?" It was Xian who was almost shouting now. "Would you say the same thing if it were Cheng or I in your shoes and someone else did that to us?"
Yanli had nothing to say to that. So she just hung her head "I am sorry, boys..."
"Don't be sorry, Jie. We... we don't blame you. We blame that asshole" Cheng said.
Both boys had gotten up from their chairs and were now kneeling beside their sister as they hugged her again.
"I have left him for good... Umm.. I do have another news to give you." She smiled slightly.
Xian and Cheng moved back to look at her with shrewed eyes.
"What is it?" Cheng asked.
"Umm.. you guys... uh.. are going to become uncles." she said the last part of the sentence in one breath.
Both the boys fell backward with a thud. It would have been comical had Yanli not being hit by anxiety to know if they would accept her decision.
"We what?" Cheng said.
"You are pregnant?" Xian asked.
She looked at Cheng first, "uncles," she said and then turned to Xian, "Yes and I am keeping it."
The shocked look on their faces stayed their for a while making Yanli want to bite her nails in anticipation.
"I am going to be an uncle," Cheng said in disbelief.
"We're going to be uncles!" Xian whispered.
Then both boys jumped up and hugged Yanli again.
"We're so happy for you jie! You will be the best mother anyone can ask for." Xian said.
Yanli released the breathe she didn't know she was holding and laughed out loud. Qing was right, her brothers were her best support system. She was ready for whatever was to come as long as she had her people around her. I am ready, she thought. The determination in her eyes were unmistakable.
-----
After finishing dinner at the cafe, the brothers were helping Jiang Yanli clean up when she suddenly said, "Oh no! I need to tell mother about all this.. She won't be happy."
Wei Wuxian looked at Jiang Cheng and then both turned towards their sister.
"Don't worry jie, if mom gives you a hard time, we will talk to her" Cheng said.
Xian nodded and said, "We're here for you, Jie. Always were, always will be."
Yanli smiled at their support. "Thank you boys, I will be right back." With that, she stepped out of the kitchen and made the dreaded call.
-----
She stepped into the kitchen, eyes rimmed red and almost collapsed against the kitchen counter. The moment her brothers saw her, they rushed to her. They could tell she had cried, again.
"What did she say, jie?"
"Was she too harsh on you?"
"Please don't be sad, jie, we will go talk to her"
Tears were falling from her eyes steadily but Jiang Yanli waved her hand at them and then smiled through her tears. "It surprisingly went well. At first she was angry at me but then as I explained things, she actually said, she was proud of me for standing up for myself... she's never said, she was proud of me.. ever."
Both boys hugged her at once, almost smothering her with their love.
Yanli laughed and said, "It's finally over. I can be happy now.."
-----
"So, you want to wreak some havoc?"
"You read my mind, Cheng, but let's call for back up, I don't want to lose my cool in the middle of arguments and gives the fucker a reason to do something sneaky with the law." Wei Wuxian pulled out his phone and dialed a familiar number.
